So, why is it okay for guys to be fully covered and actually look like the character they are dressed up as, while girls have to show lots of skin in a "sexed-up" version. Unless, of course, it is the infamous gold bikini. Even if I had the model's body, I'd have enough self-respect not to flaunt it to the world. If I'm going as a Star Trek character, I'll be Dr. Crusher, who actually wears CLOTHES (vs lingere).

Hi! Are you deranged? I'm pretty sure that this feature was written by a guy, or, an utterly atypical girl geek.
There is no way I have the body to get away with any of your suggested Girl Geek costumes. I'm not fat and grotesque, but hey I AM a geek with a High IQ. I don't have time for the gym.
Give us Girl Geeks something we can actually use. Sheesh.

I used to work in a costume shop for 2 years. I'm a chick, I'm a geek, I have bought most of these outfits for my other job I had at the time as an entertainer for parties. When I moved in with my boyfriend and he found my boxes of costumes he was a little weirded out by the Snow White and Cinderella (for the children's entertainment aspect of my business) but when he found the sexy Star Trek costume (pictued above, which by the by is one of the most COMFORTABLE costumes I've ever warn and comes with a pin that says "Go where no man has gone before,") he hugged me and told me how happy he was to find a chick like me into everything he was into.

^_^

From my experience in the costume shop and as an entertainer, if you're looking for a good WELL made costume, Legg Avenue is excellent for girl costumes (they also have a Super Mario with Mushroom Princess costume set available as well) as well as any unlicensed look alike costume. Because 90% of the cost goes towards the licensing for these costume companies, if you buy, say, a Spider-Man costume, it's usually very poor quality unless it's the highest quality licensed costume they sell (which is usually overpriced for the materials used anyway). Never buy the "Spider-Man," always buy the "Spider-guy." It's better quality for your dollar and usually is so minutely different from the costume portrayed in the movie, comic, or book that no one will know except you and maybe one other person at the party you're attending.

Don't believe me...try it. Also, ALWAYS get your costumes early. If you find a year round shop, they can usually special order anything for you out of catalogs so you don't have to worry about picking through what's left a week before the big day. That way, you get what you want, when you want, and you'll look great for your event.

Take it from a pro; you'll only thank yourself later for planning ahead. ^_^
