First Look: Iron Man Mark III Suit

Empress Eve   |

Iron Man suitEW has a sneak peek at the Iron Man cybernetic Mark III suit, which Robert Downey Jr will don in the Jon Favreau-directed feature film.

Downey bulked up to wear the red and gold armor, created by Oscar-winning F/X master Stan Winston. Favreau said of the star wearing the restrictive, sweaty costume:

“Robert was very bullish on wearing the suit whenever possible … Now I don’t know if he’s such a fan of that idea.”

In Iron Man, Downey plays millionaire industrialist Tony Stark, who creates the high-tech armor to fight villains after suffering a life-threatening heart injury in war-torn Afghanistan. (See photo of Downey forging the armor and the resulting Mark I gray suit.)

The film, which will feature the Marvel superhero’s Mark I gray armor as well as the red and gold suit, opens in theaters May 2, 2008.

  • Ozymandias

    Yes, yes it does.

I’d rather be watching this movie this summer instead of “Pirates 3, Attack of the horrible Johnny Depp Performance”.

It’s kind of hard to screw up an Iron Man suit. Thank god they didn’t find a way.

It’s easy to screw up an Iron Man suit. Haven’t you seen Ultimate Iron Man?

UPDATE from director Jon Favreau on the Iron Man myspace forum:

Posted by Jon Favreau: May 5, 2007 4:56 AM

The suit was designed by an artist named Phil Saunders who collaborated with Adi Granov based on the comic art of Granov. It evolved over many months and then was brought to Winston Studios to refine the design in order to build it as a working practical costume. Winston modeled and then fabricated the actual suit. It is difficult to identify a single person as the designer because they each contributed to the final design. The EW article correctly stated, however, that the suit was built by Winston. I hope this helps.

I think Robert Downey Jr. will do a fantastic portrayal of Iron Man. He truly is one of the finest actors of our day. His past problems don’t seem to affect his acting ability, as least in my opinion. He is under-rated and I think this role will prove that point as I’m sure he will be fantastic in it! I can’t wait to see it!
