Though wasn’t it:”“Don’t call me a mindless philosopher, you overweight GLOB of grease?”

    I seem to remember Glob..not blob…
    could be wrong though..

[ED. NOTE: Had it as glob.. don’t know what happened, so let’s blame spellcheck. Thanks for the heads-up]

    Comment by Kenzan — May 24, 2007 @ 1:45 pm

  2. “Do or do not, there is no try”

[ED. NOTE: Surely Yoda is smart enough to know he said that in Empire.]

    Comment by Yoda — May 24, 2007 @ 2:24 pm

  3. What about: Negitive, negitive, it didn’t go in. Just a peckin on the surfice.

    Comment by Cheeseburger Brown — May 24, 2007 @ 1:52 pm

  5. Eric: It’s “…just IMPACTED on the surface.” What you said is not only wrong it makes no sense. watch the movie a few more times.
Also, you guys neglected my FAVORITE quote:
Han: “I don’t have time to discuss this with your comittee!”
Leia: “I am NOT a committee!”

    Comment by rastatech — May 24, 2007 @ 1:57 pm

[ED. NOTE: Once again. ‘Luke, I’m your father.’ was from Empire, not the original Star Wars.]

  12. Ummmm… You missed:

    “Look sir, droids”

Seriously, there’s a lot of fun made about that comment (cuz it was so stupid).

    Comment by Ian — May 24, 2007 @ 2:03 pm

  13. @kiwiT & elliott
I’m your father… great quote, but it’s from a different film.

“look sir droids” still stands though.

  28. what about

“I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.”

    Comment by Nick — May 24, 2007 @ 2:38 pm

  29. Yeah, they are missing the most essential “Luke I am your father”. They also forgot a couple of my other golden moments, “governor Tarkin, I should have expected you to be holding Vaders leash” another goody is “Cut the chatter red 2!” and last but most defiantly not least “I can hold it!!! NOO!!” by Jek Porkins

    Comment by Roybert — May 24, 2007 @ 2:48 pm

  32. what? wait. I thought the best line was the “walking carpet” one.
yeah, I can’t remember the whole line. But at least I know it was in this movie!

    Comment by Mister Fun — May 24, 2007 @ 2:58 pm

  33. “Can someone get this walking carpet out of my way!!!”

    Comment by Shawn — May 24, 2007 @ 3:00 pm

  34. #7 “You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon? … It’s the ship that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs.” This is TERRIBLE, a parsec is a unit of distance not time ARRGGGGHHHH. Damn Hollywood scriptwriters proud of their techno-babble, too lazy to do any reality checks.

    Comment by Dr Mic — May 24, 2007 @ 3:06 pm

  35. i think the line that cracked me up the most was the

    “I dont like you!!”

    Comment by Wanderer — May 24, 2007 @ 3:33 pm

  36. How about:
“Who is the more foolish? The fool or the fool that follows him?”

    Comment by Chad — May 24, 2007 @ 3:35 pm

  37. Tarkin lines are golden. I love the evacuate one, but bickering is pointless and charming to the last are also golden. My favorites:

“The Jedi are extinct. Their fire has gone out of the universe”
    and

“The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I have just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away.”

When I like to point out that I found something I sometimes use 3PO´s over heere (to Jawa Sandcrawler) line.

    MTFBWY

    Comment by WampaOne — May 24, 2007 @ 3:50 pm

  38. I know it was commented before but I think it deserves to be said again,

what rejects forget “Luke, I am your father”. That’s the number one quote!

[ED. NOTE: Another in the long line of people who can’t tell the difference between Star Wars and Empire.]

    Comment by Shawn — May 24, 2007 @ 5:00 pm

  39. #20 should be way higher.

    Comment by Mo3pheus — May 24, 2007 @ 4:07 pm

  40. Also, what about the Flacon making the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs? How can a race be measured in distance?

It’s just more of the inane revisionism from your Superman haircut hero, George Lucas.

    What a hack!

    Comment by Mo3pheus — May 24, 2007 @ 4:09 pm

  41. “Look at the size of that thing.”

“It’s not impossible, I used to bullseye womprats in my T16 back home, they’re not much bigger than 2 meters.”

    And the best ever…
(in a whiney voice) “..but I was going to go to Tashi Station and pick up some power converters.”

    Comment by ross — May 24, 2007 @ 4:38 pm

  42. Nothing like yoda :)

    Comment by Ivan Minic — May 24, 2007 @ 4:58 pm

  43. I agree with Mo3pheus, #20 should be higher.

    Comment by jeff — May 24, 2007 @ 5:05 pm

  44. Dr Mic,

Actually parsecs can be used to measure distance or time. I read that somewhere, wish I had a source to back it up with.

“But I was gonna go to Anchorhead and pick up some power convertors!!”

    Comment by Bryan St. Amour — May 24, 2007 @ 5:07 pm

  45. Nevermind, wikipedia owned me: Parsecs are indeed units of measurement. My mistake.

    Comment by Bryan St. Amour — May 24, 2007 @ 5:08 pm

  46. Actually it does make sense, because the kessel run is done by flying past the Maw Cluster of black holes, so making it in less than 12 parsecs means that Han travelled less than 12 parsecs away from the Maw Cluster in order to shorten his time.

    Comment by Bryan St. Amour — May 24, 2007 @ 5:11 pm

  47. You missed the part of the one:

“Everything’s fine here…We’re all fine here now, thank you…how are you?”

    Comment by Giolon — May 24, 2007 @ 5:17 pm

  48. What??? No Jar-Jar…

    Comment by dw — May 24, 2007 @ 5:47 pm

  49. But I was going into Tashi station to pick up some power converters!

    Comment by Spank — May 24, 2007 @ 5:55 pm

  50. and “I have you now!”

plus “you may fire when ready”

    Comment by Happy Phantom — May 24, 2007 @ 6:18 pm

  51. In the official stories written AFTER Return of the Jedi, one of the books told the story of Han and Chewie making the Kessel Run. Kessel was a planet where Spice was mined. The only way to get to Kessel was to traverse a maze of black holes, or to just go around it, which would have taken waay longer than going thru the black hole maze. So, making the “Kessel Run” in less than 12 parsecs is accurate, as Han brillaintly navigated it in record time and shortest distance. If you were a true fanboy, you would have read the books that fill in the stories before, between and after the movies. By the way, Spice is the crystals that come from the web of a spider-like giant creature and deliveres temporary empathic abilities to the user.

    ;D

  52. It’s a trap!

    Comment by Jason — May 24, 2007 @ 7:05 pm

  53. Where the hell is “I am your father.” ??

[ED. NOTE: … In the Empire Strikes Back … ]

    Comment by swjunky — May 24, 2007 @ 9:19 pm

  54. nice, but can’t you get the audio with each one? :)

    Comment by Chris G — May 24, 2007 @ 9:21 pm

  55. how about the most famous of all….luke i am your father

[ED. NOTE: How about in another two years when we do the list for Empire Stikes Back?]

    Comment by adam — May 24, 2007 @ 10:58 pm

  56. What about “Hooky religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster by your side kid”

    Comment by amouse — May 24, 2007 @ 10:31 pm

  57. I have watched Star Wars a few times. Personally, the original film that was released 30 years ago still beat the crap out of the last few recent Star Wars movies.

    Comment by Keith — May 24, 2007 @ 10:51 pm

  58. How about:

“Look, it’s Darth Vader! Kill the mother fucker!”

    Best line ever

    Comment by Regalgsx — May 24, 2007 @ 11:55 pm

  59. “I have you now”

    Comment by mike — May 25, 2007 @ 12:25 am

  60. I, too, noticed the thing about parsecs. Stupid Hollywood. I guess they just used it because of “secs” being like “seconds.” Most people watching wouldn’t even know the difference…sadly.

It’s like the sorry attempt at parody in the World of Warcraft episode of South Park…sad, really.

May the force be with you.

    Comment by Szylax — May 25, 2007 @ 2:21 am

  61. Well this is a hornet’s nest of opinion if ever I saw one!

My vote for best quote not on the list:

“We’re going in, we’re going in full throttle.”

Not only is it badass but it inspired a whole Prodigy track (although the sample was reversed in the album release)

That said, nice list. If more people blogged about Star Wars the world would be a better place.

    Comment by Rob — May 25, 2007 @ 4:02 am

  62. “Where are you taking this.. thing?”
    “Prisoner transfer from cellblock 1138”

    and

“Will somebody get this walking carpet out of my way”

    Comment by Matt Grover — May 25, 2007 @ 4:16 am

  63. IT’S A TRAP!!!

    Comment by howaythelads — May 25, 2007 @ 6:22 am

  64. One quote missing: “The more you tighten your grip the more star systems will slip through your fingers”

    Comment by Jason — May 25, 2007 @ 8:36 am

  65. Seriously, I didn’t see anyone put these down (albiet I didn’t look too hard):

    “It’s not my fault”

“TK421, why aren’t you at your post?”

    “Cut the chatter Red 2”

    Comment by Ahren — May 25, 2007 @ 9:50 am

  66. “Darth Vader betrayed and murdered your father”.

    Comment by Joshua — May 25, 2007 @ 10:51 am

  67. Note to the rabid fanboy: When Lucas wrote the the film he had no idea what a “parsec” was, he just though it sounded cool and put it in the movie. Later on, his minions realized the error and wrote books to cover his mistake. It’s the same reason he explained C3PO being built by Darth Vader:

    Because he’s a hack!

    Comment by Mo3pheus — May 25, 2007 @ 4:24 pm

  68. oh, and the walking carpet bit is from empire…
    while they were on Hoth.

[ED. NOTE: “walking carpet” is from original SW, not Empire. That was one of the quotes considered for this list.]

    Comment by willis — May 25, 2007 @ 7:33 pm

  69. as per the under 12 parsecs comments…
it’s not a race you idiots, the kessel run is an illegal smuggling run, carrying spice, (an intoxicant that is illegal most places in the galaxy), from the mines on kessel, out of the system to free space. the imperials guard it well, and there is this little thing called the Kessel Maul…

doing the RUN, (not race you morons) in under 12 parsecs means superior navigation, as well as an outstanding ship, because it’s setup allowed you to cut corners, get closer to stars, and other gravity wells, without dropping you out of hyperspace, which technically has no distance….

so i guess the point here is who is the bigger moron, the one who makes a fantastic script, filled with a wonderful story, or the moron who tries to bash at it with their so called intelligence, without so much as a basic understanding of the context of the content.

    Comment by willis — May 25, 2007 @ 7:32 pm

  70. “Luke I am your father..” is definitely missing from this list.

    Comment by Motorcycle Guy — May 25, 2007 @ 11:53 pm

  71. Hey Motorcycle Guy, I’m sorry to have to correct you, but this list is exclusively quotes from the first Star Wars movie—Luke doesn’t find out that Vader is his poppa until Empire Strikes Back.

    Comment by Dave3 — May 26, 2007 @ 2:32 am

  72. Oh yes 18 is the best!

    What about:
Beru: “He’s (Luke) got too much of his father in him.”
Owen: “Thats what I’m afraid of.”

Surely a classic peice of intentional irony.

RamDammer took the words right out of my mouth for the whole Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs issue. Bravo.

    Comment by Dano — May 26, 2007 @ 4:27 pm

  73. Biggs: “Luke, at that speed can you pull out in time?”

How can you leave that off the list? ;)

    Comment by Bongjuan — May 28, 2007 @ 4:02 am

  74. I liked most of those except, “Boring story anyway…” That always made my skin crawl. Han’s sexiest line was something like “Yeah, I bet you did!” right before he shoots Grido. Luke’s funniest whiny line was “Uncle Owen, this R2 unit has a bad motivator!” That one makes me laugh every time.

    Comment by geewits — May 28, 2007 @ 4:18 am

  75. Saying that the “Luke I am your father” line was missing from the list is as intelligent as saying that the line “Live Long And Prosper” was left off the list too. Why? BECAUSE NEITHER LINE WAS IN THE ORIGINAL MOVIE STAR WARS!!!

Comment by Named My Daughter After Leia — May 28, 2007 @ 7:48 am

  76. Keep On Target

    Comment by Brooke — May 28, 2007 @ 7:50 am

  77. “Who is more foolish, the fool or the fool that follows him?” -Alec Guinness (Obi Wan Kenobi, this one is my personal favorite)

“Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid” -Harrison Ford (Han Solo)

    Comment by Joe — May 28, 2007 @ 7:58 am

  78. One the best not on there….”You can’t win Darth. If you strike me down I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.”

    Comment by Mr T. pities you — May 28, 2007 @ 9:20 am

  79. “I love you.”
    “I know.”

    Comment by Clayton — May 28, 2007 @ 9:22 am

  80. I havent read all comments so I dont know if someone pointed out that the list is only from A New Hope, that is why a lot of the quotes ppl have been mentioning didnt make the list.

    Comment by Rebecca — May 28, 2007 @ 9:44 am

  81. Dantooine. They’re on Dantooine.

    Comment by Dippiscott — May 28, 2007 @ 9:47 am

  82. how about:

“If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.”

    that should be on there.

    Comment by dude — May 28, 2007 @ 9:54 am

  83. I would like to point out to all the people who are saying that “I your father” is in Empire: When I first came upon this, I ignored the intro and went straight to the quote list,so I didn’t see that instead of calling A New Hope by it’s name (or even Episode IV), it is here simply referred to as Star Wars. I believe this is what creates the confusion.

    Comment by Kerrie — May 28, 2007 @ 10:03 am

  84. My favorite: “Flying through hyperspace ain’t like dusin’ crops, kid”

    Comment by scbyrd — May 28, 2007 @ 10:34 am

  85. Correction: dustin’ crops

    Comment by scbyrd — May 28, 2007 @ 10:35 am

  86. I’m not sure what bugs me more – the fact that people keep asking why the line “No, I am your father,” wasn’t in the movie, or that they keep erroneously saying that the quote was, “Luke, I am your father.” Come on people, if you’re truly Star Wars fans, I wouldn’t even have to explain this.

One of my favorite lines from A New Hope was “Listen to them, they’re dying,” which C-3P0 says when he thinks he failed to stop the trash compactor in time.

    Comment by Ben — May 28, 2007 @ 11:31 am

  87. “Lord Tarkin! I thought I smelled your foul stetch when I came on board.”

    Comment by Marty — May 28, 2007 @ 12:52 pm

  91. I love quote #12.

#14 should have the improvisatory conversation that takes place beforehand… good stuff.

    Comment by Anon — May 28, 2007 @ 3:17 pm

  92. I think C3PO yells…”Curse my rusty innards!“

    Comment by chris — May 28, 2007 @ 4:22 pm

  93. Sheesh… will one of the page editors please clarify AT THE TOP of the page that this is for A New Hope only– for the idiots who keep posting the “where’s ‘i am your father?'” comments?

    That being said… great list!

[ED. NOTE: We had hoped that stating “In honor of the 30th anniversary of the premiere of the original ‘Star Wars’” would be enough considering that by using that statement there can be NO other movie we are talking about besides the very first “Star Wars” movie George Lucas made in 1977 30 years ago, also known as Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. And the fact that NOT ONE quote from the list is from any other movies from the saga should help readers deduce which movie we are speaking of, though, I guess not. 97. I was always confused about Leia. First, she says, “I’m a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan.” Later, she says, “Alderaan is peaceful. We have no weapons.” Is she saying she’s on a diplomatic mission to her own home planet? Gee, there’s a tough assignment.

  98. Wheres “No, I am your father”?

LMAO just kidding! Half the people reading this arnt too bright…most of us worked out that ALL of the quotes are from the first one! Nice list, I would have ordered them slightly differently myself but most of them were there. It must be pretty hard to to pick 30 quotes, most of the lines in this film are VERY memorable! But I think we all knew that “May the force be with you” would be number one! Good list though, well done!

  102. I didn’t see this quote, but this is one of my favorite ones. It is from Darth Vader in the Return Of The Jedi when Darth Vader arrives at the partially completed Death Star at the beginning of the show, and he says to one of the imperial officers when the officer learns that the empororer is arriving. He tells the officer when the officers tells Darth Vader that he and his men will double the efforts on the construction of the Death Star…

“I hope so commander, for your sake. The emperor is not as forgiving as I am”. =D

    Comment by Misato — August 16, 2007 @ 10:58 pm

  103. Mo3pheus, Darth Vader DID build C3PO, if you remember from episode one, C3PO was built by the then 9-year old Anakin Skywalker, and Darth Vader is Anakin Skywalker. Also regarding the quote about the kessel run in 12 parsecs, i am glad that it has been mostly cleared up, but to elaborate, if you have watched A New Hope dvd with commentary, George Lucas clearly states that he knows parsecs are a measure of distance not time, and he knew it back in 1977 too. He states that that quote does make sense because the Millenium Falcon is not physically the fastest ship in the universe, but it is the fastest because it has the most advanced navigation computer to allow it to take the shortest possible distance around objects in hyperspace, therefore the quote is accurate. Also, a note to the editor regarding your note on adam`s post, Empire came out 3 years after A New Hope, not 2 years.

    Comment by Torretto — August 23, 2007 @ 8:02 pm

  104. In regards to the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs… I think it should be noted that it is correct. Han flew the Kessel run through an asteroid field that was considered impassable, which significantly shortened the overall length of the flight. Hence the reason to boas

  105. “You’re all clear kid, now lets blow this thing and go home.”

“I’m going in, going in full throttle”

    To please the idiots:
    “I am your father”

And I believe the the “Kessel Run” involves passing by several black holes. Straight lines are faster than curved ones. This means: if you can take a line “less than 12 parsecs” away from a black hole then you are taking a straight (fast) line and may have something to be proud of.

  109. Great list, really tough to pick out only 30 quotes; but i have gone with more Tarkin lines, my fav of which is:
“The Jedi are extinct. Their fire has gone out of the universe”

On the Kessel run debate, regardless of whether Lucas knew about the Black holes or not, a parsec (normally unit of distance) can be used as a measure of time in Relativity – time and distance become interchangeable (in theory you can measure your age in meters, say). So its fully conceivable that the Han was measuring time in parsecs…. (not that I’m saying that’s what Lucas meant by the line, just that it is possible…)

  118. One of the things I often find disappointing with quote lists is that the quotes are often boring outside of the context of the movie. Too often the memorable part is not the quote but the scene in its entirety. Quotes like “that’s no moon…” have no flair in their use of language. It just serves as a bookmark for a very memorable scene. Granted these are just my opinions, so there’s no need for people to get upset(but they probably will anyway).

When Alec Guinness says “Mos Eisley spaceport. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy,” to describe how vile the place is, well, that is a great use of language. Its not just an auditory marker used to identify a great scene. Thats my two cents.

Anyway, thanks for posting this commemorative list of episode IV.

  157. A parsec is an astronomical unit of measurement that is equivalent to 3.26 light years distance, or the distance photons will travel in vacuum over the period of 3.26 years. Light travels at an approximate speed of 186,000 miles per second (300,000 kilometers per second), so a parsec represents a distance of just over 19 trillion miles (~31 trillion kilometers).

that was explained in the books where luke first starts his new academy.
UNFORTUNATELY, if you do some research, you’ll find that originally lucas ment for this line to be an obvious lie. sorry guys i was dissapointed myself since i liked through the black hole defense in my friend’s faces, oh well

and i mean anyone that respects the star was universe should know that this movie was released with the title star wars and nothing else, it was revised to star wars a new hope around the time they came out with empire strikes back.

    great list, funny comments.

  161. It’s the ship that made the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs! Ben reacts to Solo’s stupid attempt to impress them with obvious misinformation.

So it implies that the puzzling speech of Han Solo is “misinformation” and not truth, and it has nothing to do with the nature of the Kessel Run in any respect. Han means nothing other than impressing Obi-Wan and Luke with pure boasting. Indeed, even in the final version of the script, the parenthesis attached to Han’s line states that he is “obviously lying.”

    Fat guy: I’m going in.
pilot: Watch out uve got 3 bad guys on your tail
    Fat guy: stay on target…
    Pilot: They’ve got us locked!
    Fat guy: stay on target…
    Pilot:AHHHHH!
    (one y-wing gets blown up)
    Fat guy: Stay on target!
    (Other wingman gets blown up)
    (Vader targets lead y-wing)
    Fat guy: STAY ON TARGET!!!
(Fat Guy in Y-wing gets blown to bits)

Idk I thought it was really funny, in a messed up way…
I could always get my brother to laugh when he was trying to get me to answer something and I’d just repeat: STAY ON TARGET. lol

  220. I do not understand how Admiral Ackbar saying “It’s a trap” isn’t on this list. Good list, but because of the depth and pure awesomeness that is Episodes 3 through 6 obviously some things aren’t going to make it onto the list.

BTW Episodes 1 and 2 were not to par with the Star Wars series, but Episode 3 was pretty awesome.
