Being a New Yorker, I tend to NOT want to see movies where famous NY landmarks are destroyed (for obvious reasons). It was traumatizing enough when I was a kid to see the beached head of the Statue of Liberty in Planet of the Apes, I definitely don’t want to see any modern-day destruction of my city (I’m talking to you, Day After Tomorrow).
While I really like the premise of the upcoming Will Smith remake of I Am Legend — last human survivor must find a cure for the zombie/vampire plague that’s infected the rest of humanity — I have to ask: Why must the events of this film occur in New York City when the book it’s based on (by Richard Matheson) takes place in California?
The film’s teaser trailer shows the city being evacuated and, of course, stuff being blown up. One of these scenes is probably what was written about here that cost over $5 million to film and necessitated a lot of man-power, equipment, and government cooperation.
The rest of the movie involves Smith in his quest to save humanity, which I’m totally into. But, how do I get passed stuff like this (see photo taken from the trailer here after the jump) …

See?
Either way, keep a lookout here at Geeks of Doom as we plan to bring you more updates on the film as well as a few looks back at the book and previous two movies based on it.
I Am Legend is scheduled to hit theaters December 14, 2007.
