Gerard Butler Leads Watchmen’s ‘Tales Of The Black Freighter’ DVD Short

Black FreighterGerard Butler will voice the Captain in Tales Of The Black Freighter, an animated short that will be included as a bonus feature for Watchmen‘s eventual DVD release, according to Empire.

Butler reteams with his 300 director Zack Snyder for this DVD companion piece to Snyder’s big-screen adaptation of Watchmen, which hits theaters March 6, 2009.

The actor revealed that the animated short, which tells the story of a castaway trying to intercept a ghost freighter headed for his hometown, will be in a Japanese anime style.

Tales Of The Black Freighter is the comic-within-a-comic in Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons‘s graphic novel Watchmen. It was announced last year that Snyder would not include the tale in his big-screen adaptation, but instead would include it as an animated feature for the film’s subsequent DVD release.

Time Warner Merges New Line & Warner Bros.
space
The Movie God   |  @   |

New LineVariety is reporting that in a move that is shocking to some and expected by others, Time Warner has decided to fuse together two of the mega-names of film studios, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros., with New Line acting as a branch of WB.

This will end New Line’s 40-year run as one of the biggest indie studios out there, giving us juggernaut franchises like The Lord of the Rings and Austin Powers; also, 600 jobs will be lost in the wake of this merger. New Line’s main names, Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne, will be leaving the company, but are apparently still going to stay alert to possible positions in the future. (After the relative failure of New Line’s big-budget fantasy The Golden Compass, it seemed like Shaye would soon get the ax.)

Basically, it sounds to me like New Line just wasn’t doing their part anymore and something needed to be done. It’s made to sound like this was a friendly merger of two film studios, but the visual that I get is that of when a small piece of Play Dough (New Line) is smooshed into a massive ball (Warner Bros.) to make it a little larger. WB will be the main name from now on, and it sounds to me like you won’t be seeing much special stuff from this new “branch.” In fact, the biggest titles to look for will probably be the Nightmare on Elm Street prequel and the Friday the 13th re-imagining (see New Line to Relaunch “˜Elm Street’ Franchise) and maybe even a little Freddy vs Jason 2!

Free Lunch Comics

In the same vein, and covering a lot of the same territory as old favorites like The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Tales From The Crypt, and even Creepshow, Free Lunch Comics brings the spooky back in their new supernatural anthology series, Only In Whispers.

As a whole, Whispers is a book that really tries to deliver a full package. Perhaps taking the lead from books like Criminal or Mice Templar it offers more than just comics to pull readers in. It also contains a prose story, as well as a series of”¦ I guess you could call them articles”¦ recounting the real-life experiences of the creators in which they may have encountered the supernatural — followed by a note to readers that they’d like to hear more similar stories to include at the end of future installments. Overall, the book shows an admirable clarity of vision, and right off the bat, I’d say that alone is reason to check it out.

But how are the stories?

Well, I’ll tell you…
