Though it seems more like we’re just counting down the weeks until The Dark Knight is released, each week we’re still seeing a new movie open with sizeable figures. This week, following in the trend of Wanted, opens Will Smith’s superhero movie, Hancock.
With Tuesday previews rolled into Wednesday’s opening figures, the film has earned an estimated $107 million so far, with a weekend gross of $66 million. It’s not bad for a movie which on Rotten Tomatoes is only averaging a rating of 5.3 out of 10. But with Will Smith as its leading star, it was sure to be a success.
Not surprisingly, Will Smith has been a bit of a feature and success of the July 4th “Independence Day” weekend. Starting with his 1996 blockbuster Independence Day, Smith has now appeared five more times in a movie which has taken the number one spot on the July 4th weekend.
Following Hancock came last week’s number one Wall-E, followed by Wanted, both managing to stay over the $20 million mark. Dropping further down to fourth and fifth, were Get Smart and Kung Fu Panda.
But as I said, it really is just a wait for what comes next. The weekend starting Friday, July 11, brings us Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Journey to the Center of the Earth. And while we’re expecting the Hellboy sequel to do well, it will be nothing compared to the following week, starting July 18, which will see The Dark Knight make its grand arrival.
