I originally passed on this news today, because it seemed like a no story. Julie Newmar, the number two Catwoman in my books (second to Michelle Pfeiffer), decided that not only did she think Angelina Jolie would be a great Catwoman, but that the actress has in fact made inquiries about such a role.
It’s a great story, sure: Julie Newmar, an icon in her own right, suggesting that one of the planet’s sexiest women could be the next Catwoman.
The 74-year-old Newmar, who played Catwoman in the 1960s Batman television series, reportedly told the NY Daily News, “My industry friends tell me [she] has made inquiries about the role.”
But that’s pretty much as far as the story goes really.
Luckily, we have overzealous reporters jumping in to ensure that this is much more of a story than it really should be. Sadly for me, these reporters seem to be jumping straight out of Australia, with News.com.au suggesting that Jolie “is said to be in final negotiations with studio bosses to play the feline villain who first appeared in the Batman comics.”
This is nothing short of outrageous villainy at its greatest. The article mentions that it’s unclear whether Jolie’s supposedly Catwoman would be in another Christopher Nolan Batman movie or a spin-off movie of her own. There have never been any rumors about a possible second Catwoman movie — not surprisingly considering the utter failure the first one was. At this point, Warner Bros. hasn’t even locked Nolan into coming back for a third go at the franchise, let alone decided on who the villain would be. Nolan seems to believe that everything should be taken a step at a time, and the last we heard, Nolan and writer David S. Goyer had only been throwing around ideas for a third film, but nothing at all concrete.
And I’m sorry, as sexy as Jolie is she just is not going to be playing Catwoman anytime soon. So you can all calm down a little and stop picturing Jolie in yet another skintight outfit.
