EW has posted the first look of the USS Enterprise from JJ Abrams‘ upcoming Star Trek.
Back in January, the first photo of the iconic starship was revealed, but it was only a partial shot of the ship, shown under construction.
Abrams and Co were sensible enough not to mess with the memorable saucer design of the original NCC-1701 by combining the TV series’ Enterprise with that of the movie franchise’s to create a “new yet familiar Enterprise.”
“If you’re going to do Star Trek there are many things you cannot change. The Enterprise is a visual touchstone for so many people. So if you’re going to do the Enterprise, it better look like the Enterprise, because otherwise, what are you doing?”
Smart move, JJ! The director of this Trek prequel, which follows the adventures of the crew of USS … Enterprise (as Kirk’s memorable voiceover says in the TV show’s opening credits) when they were younger, said he wanted the ship to be realistic, while also holding up against modern-day special effects.
Reports are that we’ll get to see the Enterprise in action this weekend when the trailer hits theaters in front of showings of Quantum of Solace and again online this Monday.
In other Trek news, Abrams has been touring around some footage from the upcoming film and TrekMovie has several reports from the viewings. They’ve got lots of info, so if you’re dying to know some details about the film, definitely check out the site.
Its not bad given what they have to work with. I like the “chunky” look to it and each of the section flow into one another very nicely.
Nacelles are a bit odd, but no big deal – It could have been a lot worse!

Looks a little too sloped for me. Too stylized. But they are the movie experts, I’m just a guy.

I like the nacelles, they look cool. But the secondary hull is way too small.
