McG Talks ‘Terminator Salvation’ Sequel & Fighting James Cameron

The Movie God   |

Terminator

Terminator Salvation and many fans (including myself) aren’t exactly on speaking terms right now. After the embarrassment of a PG-13 rating rained down — throwing the integrity of the entire franchise in front of the sacrificial blade of the financial profit gods — you just can’t help but feel like your girlfriend is cheating on you in front of your face while pointing and laughing for good measure.

Heartbreak aside, Film Journal International had a long chat with director McG, where they spoke about many things. Most of the conversation consisted of stories and information that have been told and re-told over the months, but some of the chat included some incredibly interesting information, including what McG is expecting the next chapter, Terminator 5, will hold. Let’s just say…some of us may not be dancing after reading it.

McG again mentions the possible inclusion of an aged Robert Patrick being included, so that sounds like a solid idea that they’re running strongly with. Aside from that, it’s all new information, and whether it’s a legit idea for the sequel, or is McG is screwing with us hard, is really yet to be seen.

Click over for more, including McG’s words.

Here’s the full quote from the director:

I strongly suspect the next movie is going to take place in a [pre-Judgment Day] 2011. John Connor is going to travel back in time and he’s going to have to galvanize the militaries of the world for an impending Skynet invasion. They’ve figured out time travel to the degree where they can send more than one naked entity. So you’re going to have hunter killers and transports and harvesters and everything arriving in our time and Connor fighting back with conventional military warfare, which I think is going to be fucking awesome. I also think he’s going to meet a scientist that’s going to look a lot like present-day Robert Patrick, talking about stem-cell research and how we can all live as idealized, younger versions of ourselves.

There you have it. To me it sounds like he wants to take all the new toys and machines from his new movie, and then bring them back to our modern time and do the whole thing over again — only this time, it will be seven years earlier and less apocalyptic-y looking. Pile on top of that, all of the rules and explanations that we’ve been given through three movies that could potentially be getting thrown out of the highest of windows with this plan.

Of course, it’s so very far away before we even begin to know what the fifth installment will really hold; and thankfully, there’s lots of time to change this plan and/or deny it was ever said. If, however, this is the real plan of McG, it’s hard to find the words. I think the last thing you want to do before your gigantic summer movie — which already has promised that some people will probably hate the ending — is released, is to start saying things like this. When these statements are made, fans will begin to start questioning your logic; and by association, they will question the unseen logic that could have gone into Terminator Salvation.

Oh, and on a fun little side note — McG re-told the well-known story of his encounter with James Cameron on the set of Avatar. In this day’s particular version, though, he spoke about the anticipated screening he wants to hold for Cameron, and how to handle a director-fight if one were to break out.

I look forward to having a private screening [of the finished movie] with Jim, most likely at [Hollywood super-agent] Ari Emanuel’s screening room. It’s neutral turf, so if we get into a fistfight, Ari can break it up!”

Can you imagine the PPV sales one could pull off with an all-director fight card? You already have McG vs. Michael Bay, Bay vs. Uwe Boll, Boll would fight anyone you threw in front of him (hell, Uwe Boll would throw hands with Dakota Fanning if you set it up), and now McG vs. the great James Cameron. Consider my $49.99 in the bank.

I like the plot idea for T5 and if Salvation fails then fair enough, because as far as I’m concerned theres only 2 Terminator films.
Maybe I will be able to add a third to that list… I wait with anticipation.

Christain Bale wouldn’t sign a three pic deal for a mediocre storyline. It must be good.
