SDCC 09: ‘Lost’ Panel Entertains; Raises New Questions [w/Spoilers]

The Movie God   |

LostOf all of the gigantic movie reveals that happen at the San Diego Comic-Con each year, you wouldn’t expect a TV show to steal some of the spotlight. Well, leave it up to Lost and producers Damon Lidelof and Carlton Cuse to put on a show and do just that. The duo showed up with some very interesting video clips and a little fun from a few of the show’s cast members, leaving the room fully entertained and perhaps even more curious than ever.

The panel started off with a promo for Lost University — which begins enrollment on September 22, so don’t miss out! After that, they played a few minor clips before introducing Mr. Lindelof and Mr. Cuse. The duo gave a brief intro before going into some more hilarious videos. If you hadn’t figured it out, the panel was more of a collection of fun videos and the above-mentioned interesting videos than anything. Being the last time Lost will be at Comic-Con, the producers made their panel for the fans.

Among some of the videos they showed, was a comic mash-up with footage of some Lost fanatic’s crazy viewing parties, audio dialogue dubbed over the Muppet Babies, and a Brokeback Mountain spoof including Jack and Sawyer. They even did a special “In Memorium” video called “LOST but not Forgotten,” that showcased the characters that have died over the past five seasons. I’ll say this: you know a show is untouchably good when their In Memorium of a bunch of completely fictional characters still makes you sad.

Click over for much more, including a few videos that will have you trying to figure out what the last season will bring (with spoilers… warning included).

Of course, it wouldn’t be a panel without letting the fans ask the questions that they’ve been dying to know the answers to — the questions that will only be answered with other questions, leaving you more confused than ever. At one point in the Q&A, Hurley himself, Jorge Garcia, stepped up for a couple of questions of his own about where the show would go, including about all the theories that may arise from his chicken video discussed below. At one point, Jorge got a little carried away with his questioning and Benjamin Linus (Michael Emmerson) came out to figure out what he was doing and set him straight. This set their little sideshow in motion, which came to a head when Jorge accused Michael of trying to play Hurley at first, which lead to Jorge showing the audition video as proof — very funny stuff.

That pretty much does it for the panel; they moved on to bringing out the cast and answering more questions in the last half. Just a note, you can see pretty much the entire panel through various videos on YouTube, so go fishing if you feel so led to.

As for these incredibly intriguing videos, they certainly bring up many chances for speculations and crackpot theories. Not even I can help but try and figure out what they mean. One of the videos is a commercial for Mr. Cluck’s — the fast food joint started by Hurley after winning the lottery. The funny thing about it, is that he started it after returning from Australia and the joint is doing fine. Hurley even states in the commercial that since winning the lotto, he’s had “the best luck in the world.” Hmm. Another video was a commercial for Oceanic Airlines, which was started in 1979 (Dharma times?) and has been going for 30 years with a perfect safety record. The end of the commercial comes with a catchy tagline: “Our Skies Lead To Your Destiny.” Finally, the last intriguing video was a mock episode of America’s Most Wanted that featured Kate and the attempted murder of her stepfather, which in fact actually lead to the murder of her stepfather’s apprentice.

Fair warning, SPOILERY TALK below. Don’t read if you’re not caught up!

So as we all know, the end of season 5 revolved around Daniel Faraday’s master plan to detonate the hydrogen bomb. The theory being: detonate the bomb, and all things go back to the way they were; all of the survivors of Oceanic flight 815 would actually land safe and sound in LA and went on with their lives. So are these videos implying that the plan worked? Did they all go back to their normal existences?

If this is the case, the Kate video becomes big. When she got on that flight, she was in custody, so why would she be on America’s Most Wanted? Also, if this is the case, none of the characters would have a clue who each other is, which would make for the worst final season ever. So what’s the catch?

If I had to take one big shot in the dark, I may guess something crazy, like maybe half of the survivors were reset, while the others had something different happen. Then you have a show where say Jack is still on the island and finds out Kate went back is in real trouble due now to the fact that she actually killed someone instead of defending her abused mother and eventually going free?

Of course, that’s all ridiculous and it’s just easier to wait giddily until the sixth and final season begins and tries to bring it all home in one last glorious grand finale…or one massive plane crash. Ba-zing!

Below are the three videos mentioned above. Again, you can hit YouTube to try and find all of the hilarious other videos. Feel free to go nuts with what you think is going on here, if anything at all.
