This would have mad ethe last 20 minutes much more exiciting. With thinking like that these same people would cut the first battle Bull Run (manassas) out of a civil war epic. Or cut WW1 from a history of the twentith century. Also why leave the funeral out. The book ends as a downer and does not leave you with much optimistic. It fell WAAAAY short what the character deserved. I understand that the scene might not be like the book, but it was so anti-climactic. After the movie was over I just sat in the theater thinking "seriously..that was it?!" They could have done better but it would be a blockbuster no matter what they did to it.
