New ‘Swamp Thing’ Movie Being Developed, Complete With 3-D

Swamp Thing

While doing a conference for the new Kate Beckinsale movie, Whiteout, mega-producer Joel Silver was asked about what projects he might have coming up and his thoughts on the new and improved 3-D technology that’s sweeping the business. Collider was attending the conference, and reports that Silver revealed that he does in fact have a project that he’s held the rights to for a period of time now, and that he believes would be perfect for the 3-D treatment. That movie: Swamp Thing!

Swamp Thing is a DC Comics character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson that was turned into a 1982 horror/superhero movie of the same name that was written and directed by Wes Craven. It told the tale of a scientist who was transformed into a half man, half swamp life being after a lab accident. After the accident, he eventually moves into the swamp and begins fighting the various threats to his new environment. A sequel called The Return of Swamp Thing was released in 1987, but wasn’t received as well — though many would say Swamp Thing himself looked a-lot more bad-ass in the sequel.

Considering the current trend of everyone “going green,” a big and creepy superhero type who fights those who threaten the environment could work, but it could also become pretty cheesy if not handled carefully. Swamp Thing is basically the real Captain Planet, to be honest. It’s been so long since I’ve seen it, that I personally don’t remember a thing from the movie, but the image of the giant green man roving his swamp lands is something of a nostalgic image to me, as I remember being intrigued by whatever the hell he was as a young one.

Keep in mind that this is merely a possible project for Joel Silver, and it could be a very long time before we see it…if ever.

Is this something you would want to see happen, or could you just care less whether they actually make a Swamp Thing movie in 3-D?

  1. Why not, the tv show was good. So long as it doesn’t end up being another manthing.

  2. Too many people wanting to go 3D. A remake seems like a decent idea but the 3D part should be dropped.

  4. I agree with ya TMG. The Green Scene is just the “environment” needed for this Beau of the Bayou to succeed as an improved remake. I think they would have to take ST super-sonic though along the scale of Akira Anime creatures becoming the whole Swamp as the character develops. MPTY Joel.

  6. I’m surprised this articled didn’t even mention Alan Moore, the visonary lunatic writer who single-handedly revamped “Swamp Thing” and ensured that the character didn’t see the same fate as such DC nopefuls as Ragman or Matter Eater Lad.

There’s only one way a new Swamp Thing movie could work, and that means pissing off Alan Moore by adaption his remarkable source material one more time. If you’ve read his run on the series, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
