Deal: Will & Grace: The Complete Series
 |
Posted by Empress Eve | September 11th, 2009 at 7:03 am |
Today’s Goldbox spotlight item of the day over at Amazon is Will & Grace: The Complete Series DVD box set for only $124.99 (that’s 50% off the list price of $249.98).
This 33-disc DVD collection contains all eight seasons of the NBC comedy about Will (Eric McCormack, a gay lawyer in NYC, and Grace (Debra Messing), his former girlfriend turned best friend and roommate. The roomies are always looking for love but can’t seem to find it, and we’re never sure if Grace really ever got over Will. Will is the ‘nice’ guy and always the subject of ridicule by not only Grace, but by their two friends Jack [just Jack!] (Sean Hayes), an over the top gay man who fancies himself an actor, and the squeaky-voiced Karen (Megan Mullally), a rich lush who works (just barely) as Grace’s receptionist at her design company. While meant to be supporting characters, oftentimes, Jack and Karen steal the spotlight. Together, the foursome make for genuine comedic excellence.
The DVD set, which is packaged in a collectible cube-shaped display box, has over 70 hours of programming with an exclusive episode booklet and bonus disc with brand new extra features, including newly recorded commentaries with cast and crew, a photo gallery, themed featurettes, a Will & Grace quiz and much more [...]

Dragon*Con 2009: James Marsters Talks About ‘Caprica’ Role
James Marsters gave details about the role his character will play in the upcoming Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica in a fan panel at Dragon*Con 2009.
“I saw the pilot. All I have to say is I was disturbed and had to shut it off,” Marsters said, after explaining that he can’t go into too much detail since the show is months away from airing.
He did add that playing a role with darker, most serious tone was very exciting [...]

Fox To Make New Western With Science Fiction Twist & No, It’s Not ‘Firefly’
Just when you thought that Fox couldn’t enrage you any more than they already have, it has now been announced that Chuck producer Scott Rosenbaum is developing a new show for the television studio that will supposedly be an “epic Western with a sci-fi twist” about a gunslinger who is caught between two worlds. Rosenbaum will be producing the show with Warner Brothers TV and Terminator Salvation director McG‘s Wonderland Sound and Vision studio. No title or further details are known as of this moment.
The big catch in all of this, is that it sounds an awful lot like the basic premise for another former Fox title that just so happens to have a massive cult following of fans dying for its revival: Joss Whedon’s Firefly. Granted, the whole “stuck between worlds” bit sounds like it won’t be identical to Firefly, but it is still enough to scratch your head, and for some, maybe even become more angry. [...]

Disney’s New Hand-Drawn Movie ‘The Princess And The Frog’ Now Has A Full Trailer
The Walt Disney Company hasn’t released a hand-drawn animated movie since 2004′s Home on the Range due to the takeover by computer animated movies and their partnership with Pixar and all of their genius releases. Home on the Range was in fact supposed to be the final Disney movie that was hand-drawn like the old days, but thankfully, for now, they decided to get back to it with The Princess and the Frog, which now has a full theatrical trailer available for viewing. As wonderful as the Pixar movies are, there is a magic that comes from these old-style hand-drawn animated movies, and hopefully this means Disney gets back to making more of them.
The movie is a new take on the classic tale of the princess who kisses a frog and turns him into a prince. It’s set in New Orleans and gained attention as the first Disney cartoon to feature an African American leading lady after so many decades and so many princesses. The Princess and the Frog was originally titled The Frog Princess, and is directed by The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Hercules directors John Musker and Ron Clements. The main stars aren’t very well-known, but it features a supporting cast that includes Oprah Winfrey, John Goodman, and Terrence Howard.

MP3 Deal: ‘Singin’ In The Rain – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack’
 |
Posted by Empress Eve | September 10th, 2009 at 12:52 pm |
Today’s MP3 deal of the day over at Amazon today is the soundtrack to the movie Singin’ In The Rain for only $2.99.
I know, some of you are kneeling over in shock that I’m writing about music that isn’t metal (hey, that’s not even rock!), but I am still a movie lover, and let me tell you, I LOVE movie soundtracks and scores, especially if they’re from a musical.
This one is a true classic movie and one of the greatest musicals ever. I’m planning on listening to the soundtrack all night and think about my dearly departed loved ones who introduced me to classic movies like Singin’ In The Rain as a child (excuse me, I’m getting verklempt just thinking about it) [...]

Dragon*Con 09 Videos: GoD Interviews A Hairdresser Night Elf Druid & A Dude Who Loves Himself Some ‘Kingdom Hearts’
Dragon*Con 2009 has come and gone now, but the goodies may just never stop. We really spoil you kids.
Today comes another harvest of mini-interviews composed of course by Doug and Rob, and featuring some more of the convention’s best in show. As we all know, conventions like this one are mass gathering points for those who simply love to dress up as their most-favoritest of geeky characters and walk the floors proudly. So who better to have a little chat with, I ask thee? No one, that’s who!
In this installment, we’ll meet two interesting folks. First up is Loxida Delude, the fittingly geek-named hairdresser from Tennessee who’s all dolled up as a Night Elf Druid. She’ll share her convention experience and her gaming vices us. Next up will be a young man who is attending the convention with his mother and father, and claims to be dressed as a character from the game Kingdom Hearts 2, though I kind of think he’s a closet Twilighter and actually dressed up as Robert Pattinson. That hair puts wild to shame [...]

Deal: ‘The King of Queens’ – The Complete Series
 |
Posted by Empress Eve | September 10th, 2009 at 7:43 am |
Today’s Goldbox spotlight item of the day over at Amazon is The King of Queens – The Complete Series DVD boxset for only $93.99 (that’s 60% off the list price of $232.95).
This 27-disc DVD set contains all nine seasons of the CBS television sitcom which ran from 1998 to 2007 and starred comedian Kevin James as Doug Heffernan, a ‘big & tall’ man from Queens, NY, who works as an IPS delivery man (supposed to be like UPS). He lives with his pretty, but brash wife Carrie (Leah Remini) and her quirky elderly dad Arthur (Jerry Stiller – who played George Costanza’s father on Seinfeld). The series was a spin-off from CBS’s mega-hit comedy Everybody Loves Raymond and the cast of that show has made appearances on King of Queens. King of Queens also had a great supporting cast, being the launching pad for comedian Patton Oswalt, who played Doug’s lonely nerd of a friend.
The discs are housed quite adorably in an IPS truck, with the DVDs coming out through the box, with Doug at the wheel [...]

Dragon*Con 09 Video: Observations From The Con Floor
So this was the beginning of our weekend adventure at Dragon*Con 2009 in Atlanta. A weekend with many highs and just as many lows. Sure, some of the costumes Rob and I saw were nothing short of incredible. But for every group of “Time Travelers” (who had the most artistic costumes I’ve ever seen at one of these things) we encountered roaming the halls, there was some absurd things I should never have had to see under any circumstance, i.e the four-hundred pound woman wearing a leaf-shaped thong. Poison Ivy indeed.
Before you watch our videos, know that we had a great time. Overall, the panels were wonderful, and the convention was run brilliantly. I’m proud to say that I walked away from that Con with some pretty cool memories. I loved exchanging wits with Dirk Benedict (Face from The A-Team, Starbuck on the original BSG). That man is hilarious. And I will never forget Rob and I begging James Marsters to march across the hall with us so we could all beat up the kid from Twilight. Marsters and his manager both thought that was pretty hilarious. But all of those moments closely compete with the smell in some of the hallways (The Nerdmosphere if you will), as well as the horrific image of a quite plump and defeated woman wearing patent-leather Catwoman suit.
Check out the video here below of Rob and me roaming the halls at Dragon*Con 2009 [...]

DC Comics Restructured As DC Entertainment; Paul Levitz Steps Down
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | September 9th, 2009 at 5:20 pm |
Last week brought us big news in the comics world when Marvel Comics was bought by Disney [Read: Disney To Acquire Marvel Entertainment], and today has brought us big news from the other member of the Big 2 as Warner Bros Entertainment announced that they are restructuring and renaming the DC Comic brand as DC Entertainment. Along with the restructuring comes word that long-time DC President and Publisher Paul Levitz will step down and take on more of a consulting job, as well as returning to writing.
The announcement describes the newly formed DC Entertainment Inc as “a new company founded to fully realize the power and value of the DC Comics brand.” The rest of the press release tends to go on in a lot of corporate double speak, but what it means is that Warner Brothers and DC have seen what Marvel has done with its studio and realized that they desperately need to catch up.
What does this mean for comics fans? Probably very little. There will be a new name on the indicia as Diane Nelson steps in to replace Levitz. Nelson has worked for Warner Brothers for 20 years, and she has recently overseen the franchise management of the Harry Potter property, and I’d say that has turned out pretty well for the creator, studio, and the fans, so that’s a good sign. The odds are that the restructuring will be more about producing more films and TV shows, and that the publishing division will continue to do its own thing, same as it has done in the past [...]

J.R.R. Tolkien’s Family Settles Lawsuit, Guillermo del Toro’s ‘The Hobbit’ Moves Forward
Back in July, it was revealed that the family of author J.R.R. Tolkien was suing New Line Cinema and possibly stopping director Guillermo del Toro and producer Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit from happening. The report stated that when Tolkien sold the rights to his properties, the agreement included a 7.5% income off anything based on the titles, including movies. This translated to roughly $220 Million after the Lord of the Rings trilogy pulled down a coin or two at about $6 Billion worldwide.
After an offer here, a gripe there, and likely a pile of discussions, it has now been announced that this lawsuit has reached a settlement, and all is good in the lands of Middle Earth. Though the owed amount was at the said $220 Million, it appears that the family settled for around $100 Million in the end. This has to be looked at as a rather successful ordeal for New Line, who possibly saved $100-ish Million themselves — an amount that most believed was fairly owed. [...]

Dragon*Con 09 Video: Exclusive Interview With Swine Flu
Leave it up to the Mighty Tide of Justice guys, Doug and Rob, to contract the Swine Flu while down at in Atlanta this weekend at Dragon*Con 2009.
While roaming the convention floor, our guys on the prowl happened upon a teenage girl wearing a very clever costume of the H1N1 virus, known more commonly as the Swine Flu.
What’s even more curious is that they found a teenage girl that wasn’t into Twilight.
Check out the highly contagious video [...]

Double-Check That: ‘Rambo 5′ Now Has An Official Synopsis, New Info
On Saturday, we discovered that previous reports that Sylvester Stallone and a fifth Rambo movie would take place on the Mexican border were actually false, and that instead, he would be in the Pacific Northwest, working with an elite team to stop a bunch of experimental super-soldiers that were killing everyone. Now comes an official synopsis for the movie via AICN, and once again, things have changed a bit.
The movie is still being called Rambo V: The Savage Hunt, and it’s taking place North of the Arctic Circle. Instead of a bunch of super-soldiers, it looks like it will be a lot more like Predator, and only have one “half-human abomination” experiment that kills everything and is heading toward civilization. This is what Rambo and crew, including his twenty-two year old hunting partner, which will surely translate to a hot young face to help promote the flick.
Click on over to the other side to read the full synopsis that’s been released.
To be honest, at this point, every time we learn something new about this new Rambo project, it actually sounds more and more made up. [...]

TV Review: ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Season 1 DVD & Season 2 Preview (Ep. 1-5)
Sons of Anarchy
Created by Kurt Sutter
Starring Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, Ron Perlman, Maggie Siff, Kim Coates, Mark Boone Junior
Twentieth Century Fox
Season 1 DVD release date: August 18, 2009
Season 2 premiere date: Tuesday, September 8, 10 EST/9 CST on FX
The handiest and dandiest nutshell in which to describe the FX show Sons of Anarchy is “Hamlet with Bikers.” It’s not the least accurate metaphor in the world: You have a Claudius, you have a Gertrude, and even the hero of the show, Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam), has blond hair and blue eyes, looking as Danish as Danish can be. Hamlet with Bikers isn’t the worst kind of thing for a show. There are a whole ton of shows that don’t have Shakespearean allusions or dirty, smelly bikers, so can’t we have one that does?
But the more cynical way to describe Sons of Anarchy is “The Sopranos with Bikers,” but it’s too early to call on that one. The show needs six more seasons to overextend itself and a ton of out-of-place dream sequences to live up to that. That show got so bored with itself that it ended in mid-sentence to go and do something else.
Sons of Anarchy is the latest, and arguably best, drama to come out of the basic cable network FX, beating out other shows like Rescue Me, Damages, and the recently concluded The Shield (which is that show poor people had to make do with when they couldn’t get The Wire on HBO). In fact, I would go so far as to call Sons of Anarchy last season’s best new show in all of television. It took a little while to get its groove on, but it veered quite close to great in its second half. That’s something even the best shows on TV rarely do [...]

UFC Star Rampage Jackson To Replace Mr. T In ‘The A-Team’ After All?
Almost a year ago, we found out that Smokin’ Aces director Joe Carnahan would be directing the new adaptation of The A-Team. Around the same time, there were rumors swirling that former UFC light-heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson could possibly be playing the role made famous by Mr. T: B.A. Baracus. These rumors weren’t taken very seriously, of course, and eventually many other names were rumored, which moved Jackson slightly out of memory.
It appears that this story is back in sight, as it is being reported by the Vancouver Sun that Rampage has shown up in Vancouver to begin filming for the movie. The report basically states that the fighter is there, and has been seen signing autographs, so technically it’s not a 100% confirmation. Though it does seem that Rampage’s much-anticipated upcoming fight with Rashad Evans has been called off for a second time — the first being due to injury, and this time, it’s assumed, so that the movie can be filmed. [...]

Dragon*Con 09 Video: ‘Twilight’ Fan Interviews
The Mighty Tide of Justice boys, Doug E. Karate and Rob E. Danger, were on the scene at Dragon*Con 2009 for Geeks of Doom this weekend with camera in hand and once they found out there was a Twilight panel, they went right for it.
Apparently, the line to get into the panel was quite long, so they decided to stick around and interview some of the fans to learn more about the Twilight phenomenon and how the fans feel the series compares to other vampire stories.
Check out some of the video interviews here below with some of the Twilight fans. Note, the first video interview has spoilers for the later Twilight books [...]

Is Luke Skywalker Your Jesus? A Look At Some ‘Star Wars’ Religious Artwork
For many, Star Wars and its entire mythology may be considered a religion in itself. But what if Star Wars WAS actually a religion all this time, and many classic works of art had been created in celebration of it? As we all know, there are many easily recognizable works of religious art — most notably of them, of course, is The Last Supper. So who of us in the world of geekdom could resist the image of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Obi-Wan, R2-D2, George Lucas, and many others sitting at that legendary one-sided table for a little womp rat feast?
In all, there are twenty images of parody. Along with the Last Supper images, you can also see things like Yoda as the Pope, Storm Trooper stained glass art, and Princess Leia as Mary, holding an infant Yoda. There’s a couple using newer characters from the movies we do not speak of, but they’re pretty cool as well. [...]

Dragon*Con 2009: ‘Torchwood’ New Full Season ‘Very Likely’ But No Ianto [Updated With Video]
Ianto Jones will not return in future episodes of the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood television show, should it return for a third season, according to actor Gareth David-Lloyd in a panel at Dragon*Con 2009.
“It looks very likely that they’ll get a full season, but all we know is that they’re in talks,” David-Lloyd said. “As far as Ianto is concerned, he won’t [be returning]…”
“But, there’s always a chance,” David-Lloyd said, perhaps giving fans a spark of hope. “I really don’t know.”
Ianto met his untimely demise in the Torchwood Children of Men special, which evoked outrage from fans of the series and several campaigns to rally the show’s writers to change their minds [...]
