It’s being reported that a new movie in the National Lampoon series is now on the way, but it’s not quite the mindless processed generic college movies they have been making the last few years. No, this movie actually isn’t involved with the National Lampoon name at the moment, and will bring us right back to their roots with those lovable simpletons, the Griswold family. This new movie is planning to actually focus on the son in Vacation and its sequels, Rusty, and his family now going on a road trip of their own with references to his old family adventures. Wacky hijinks are sure to ensue.
New Line Cinema is currently meeting with writers to get a script going as soon as possible, and it is noted that places will be left wide open for the main draw Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his wife (Beverly D’Angelo) to appear in some fashion as the now grandparents. The movie is aiming to be more like Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Little Miss Sunshine instead of other road trip movie trash like and Are We There Yet? and RV.
It’s tough to imagine this could be anything like the movies they want it to be like, but good for them for aiming high. As much as most consider him a has-been, it has to be said that the more Chevy Chase is used in this, the better it will be. Extra points for the traditional Randy Quaid inclusion, naturally. Nostalgia goes a long way in movies, and if done correctly, this may just have some hidden somewhere inside.
The question becomes: who plays Rusty? If they were able to get Anthony Michael Hall, Johnny Galecki, or hell, even Ethan Embry, that would help a lot. I’m not sure Jason Lively would be the best of the bunch to be leading a movie. Then again, considering it has been a different actor every single film (was there any reason to them doing that? Anyone?), I guess it would only be fitting to get someone new. Maybe Kirk Cameron.
