Watch: The 1981 Animated Film ‘Heavy Metal’

Heavy MetalThe 1981 R-rated animated feature Heavy Metal is now online to watch for free at Crackle.

Due to its rating, you have to sign in to watch it, but sign-up is free and quick and there’s even an option to sign in using your Facebook account (even quicker). While the movie is free to watch, it does have periodic but quick commercial interruptions.

John Candy, Eugene Levy, and Harold Ramis, among others, voice the characters in this scifi animated film, based on the Heavy Metal magazine. The soundtrack is packed with great tunes from Stevie Nicks, Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, and more, including the title track by Sammy Hagar.

Heavy Metal is one of my all-time favorite movies, and let me tell you, this was not an easy movie — or soundtrack — to come back in the ’80s and early ’90s, thanks to legal disputes surrounding the music rights, which prevented its release on video til the mid ’90s.

Tidbit: In the “So Beautiful and So Dangerous” sequence with the stoned aliens about 53 minutes into the film on of the ships that passes by is the USS Enterprise of Star Trek fame. Very cool!

  1. Link only takes us to the top page of the site and when I do a search it says heavy metal doesn’t exist.

  2. @Dave

I just clicked the link, and it went right to the movie. Try again, maybe the site was doing updates or something when you last tried. All else fails, just go to crackle.com and search for it.

  3. It’s working for me. This movie introduced me to the Joseph I would become. Veteran of the Psychic Wars is the greatest song ever written. Still can’t believe they declined Vengeance (The Pact), but even without it, that is still one helluva soundtrack!

  4. I was only able to find Heavy Metal 2000. Is there something else I should be searching under while I’m in Crackle to find the 1981 Heavy Metal? Thanks in advance for the help.
