Michael Jackson’s ‘Captain EO’ To Return To Disney’s Tomorrowland

The Movie God   |

Captain EO

Fans of the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, will be thrilled to know that his posthumous reign is not yet over. The Walt Disney Company’s Disney Parks Blog announced recently that Jackson’s Captain EO will be making its valiant return to Tomorrowland locations at various Disney resorts. The Honey, I Shrunk the Audience attraction is being closed today in order to set up for the EO comeback. [UPDATE: Initial reports were that it would go to other Disney parks, but now it seems it will only be at Disneyland in California.]

The 17-minute short film was released in the mid-’80s and lasted well into the ’90s before its run ended. It was incredibly popular due to both the fact that it featured Michael Jackson and also due to its 3D format — sometimes even called 4D due to interactive elements such as smoke and lights being used within the theater.

Click on over to the other side, where you can watch Captain EO in full YouTube style right this very moment if you have never seen it. It looks to be quite the trippy little flick.

What some people might not know about Captain EO is that it actually had an elite group of names attached to its creation. The movie was actually directed by Francis Ford Coppola, produced by a one George Lucas, and the musical score was handled by James Horner. Coppola and Lucas also wrote the film with Rusty Lemorande. The short also starred Anjelica Huston as the Witch Queen (maybe the role that landed her the part in The Witches?).

Captain EO is planning to officially re-open for its limited run in February 2010.

Wow. I remember seeing that when I was like 8 and being in awe of the *special effects*. I wanted that little flying orange sprite so bad! It’s still a cute short…kids will like it.

Oh, and Anjelica Huston looked way cooler as the evil Witch Queen.

Well Lucas writing the screenplay explains that…

Trashcans? I guess in a world where apparently “loser captains” have transmutation abilities, turning crew into trashcans is feasible, but WHY?

Don’t hate guy. I don’t think anyone ever said they liked Lucas for his ‘writing.’ MJ’s song We are Here to Change the World rules. Most importantly, who else can claim their music video aired in daily rotation at multiple theme park locations for a decade? I respect Disney Parks & Resorts for bringing it back now, be it respect, cashing in, or a mix of each.

The first thing disney needs to do as they own ABC is fire martin bashir from nightline and the producer.
Then they can show this with a clear conscience.
