Eric Powell Looks To Expand ‘The Goon’ Universe This Fall
 |
Posted by Vactor | January 25th, 2010 at 3:11 pm |
Eric Powell has been a busy man as of late. Last week it was announced that his amazingly awesome epic The Goon had gone digital and now MTV has debuted the first look at Powell’s new Goon spin-off miniseries Buzzard.
Buzzard will be a three-issue miniseries set in The Goon‘s universe that focuses on a former sheriff who now craves flesh! But not the kind of flesh you may assume. The Buzzard man was originally the sheriff of a town where all the inhabitants went all George Romero on him and started craving brain pancakes for breakfast. Buzzard himself was spared of the Left 4 Dead syndrome until he meets a mysterious Priest, who cast upon him a spell that intended to turn the sheriff into a zombie but instead achieved quite the opposite: a near-immortal man who must consume the flesh of the dead.
Powell talked to MTV News about the characters origins [...]

‘Journeyman’ Creator Gets New ‘Powers’
 |
Posted by Vactor | January 25th, 2010 at 11:44 am |
Journeyman fans rejoice! Kevin Falls, creator of the late (and some would say, ‘great’) NBC show, is working on the pilot to Brian Michael Bendis‘ upcoming TV adaptation of Powers.
Previously, FX’s president and General Manager, John Landgraf had been asked about the project and he was able to confirm that it was still in the works and that Bendis had an outside writing partner who he described as,
“… a really, really good writer who got really excited about the project. The new writer and Brian have got a good take on it. They came in about two months ago and pitched what they were doing, and it was great.”
What he had not confirmed previously was the identity to this mysterious writer [...]

[Updated] Samuel L. Jackson Coming Back to Comics?
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | January 25th, 2010 at 9:59 am |
A mysterious press release came to us today from comic book publishers BOOM! Studios.
The statement simply said “BOOM! Announces….” followed by an image with a figure who is unmistakably actor Samuel L. Jackson.
The image is here at right, so click for the full large view.
There is no information in the press release beyond the image, but the image itself was labeled as “new series teaser.”
Does this mean that Jackson has decided to make his own comic? I’m assuming yes. Or, BOOM! is doing a new series with a character based on the likeness of Jackson.
Of course this isn’t the first time Mr. Jackson’s likeness has been used in a comic book. He was the model artist Bryan Hitch used for the character Nick Fury in his run on The Ultimates. This in turn lead to Jackson’s post-credits cameo as Nick Fury at the end of the first Iron Man movie [...]

Hollywood Salivates At The Thought Of ‘Mass Effect’ Movie
We all know the words to the song: movies that are based on video games and video games that are based on movies are almost always terrible. It’s just how things are. Even though the chances are rare, we still get excited about the prospect of our favorite titles being made into games and movie — the thought of playing in a world we love or watching a world we’ve played in be brought to life is just too irresistible — and so we will always hope for those few and far between times that the adaptation will work beautifully.
br/>
One fantastic sign for a fan is when the makers of their favorite game or movie are open to the possibilities, but also very adamant about the effort being put in to make something great. This is the way things are when it comes to BioWare’s brilliant Mass Effect franchise.
br/>
While speaking to MTV recently, Mass Effect 2 (which hits this Tuesday…finally) Project Director Casey Hudson had this to say about the interest there is to make a movie: [...]

Game Review: ‘Fallout 3′ Game Of The Year Edition
Fallout 3
Game of The Year Edition
Platform: Xbox 360
Developer: Bethesda Softworks
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks, Zenimax Media
Release Date: October 13, 2009
We’ve now reach the year 2010, and Fallout 3 was first released on October 28, 2008. This means that if you’re a big video game player, then you’ve probably already roamed the desolate Wasteland of post-apocalyptic Washington D.C. and don’t need my review or opinion. Thankfully, Bethesda Softworks and the game were honored with the coveted Game of the Year designation, and a Game of the Year edition of the game was released this past October with all of the amazing extra DLC content that was created to accompany the title.
When friends of mine first pushed me to play a little game called The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I was reluctant and didn’t know what to expect. After an epic 230 hour adventure (Yes, I take my time and do A LOT!), it was one of my favorite games of all time. Naturally, when we began hearing about the game studio’s next game, Fallout 3, it became an incredibly high priority, and once again, we were not let down.
Fallout 3 takes place in the year 2277, long after you and I have become dust in the wind, and two hundred years after nuclear war finally decimated our beautiful planet [...]

Read Now: Neil Gaiman’s ‘I, Cthulhu’
I’ve been meaning to post about this for nearly a month now, because it was such a cool find, and luckily, it’s not time-sensitive, so here’s the deal…
The good folks over at Tor posted I, Cthulhu, author Neil Gaiman‘s humorous take on Lovecraft, for your reading pleasure.
The short story — with an actually very lengthy full title I, Cthulhu, or, What’s A Tentacle-Faced Thing Like Me Doing In A Sunken City Like This (Latitude 47° 9′ S, Longitude 126° 43′ W) — was published in 1986 and has been posted on the author’s blog for quite some time, but Tor has included some new illustrations by Brian Elig to accompany the tale. And I absolutely love these illustrations (especially the inclusion of shoggoth’s bowl).
I, Cthulhu is supposed to be H.P. Lovecraft‘s Cthulhu dictating its autobiography to the human slave, Whateley. In this story, we learn much about the mysterious Great Old One’s ancient origins, including information on its parents. Be sure to pay close attention to the surprise reveal at the end you definitely won’t see coming [...]

Geek Peek: Disney Parks To Debut R2-MK This Spring
I love it when Disney meets Star Wars, and if you do too, then here’s some cool news for you!
This Spring, Hasbro will be releasing a brand new Disney-related astromech R2 unit styled with a Mickey Mouse theme.
The new R2-MK will have the classic Mickey Mouse colors (red, white, black, and yellow) and is topped with the famous “Mouse” ears.
The new R2 unit will be sold exclusively at Disney’s theme parks in Florida (Disney World) and California (Disneyland) in April 2010 and will be packaged as a Hasbro action figure 2-pack along with Jedi Mickey. The pack will retail for $18.95.
R2-MK made a stop at Skywalker Ranch for a photo-op before heading on to the Disney theme parks. Check out the photo here below, along with a few promo stills [...]

Product Tie-Ins For Disney’s ‘Alice In Wonderland’ Go Up Scale
Product tie-ins for Disney’s upcoming Alice In Wonderland film appear to be going the high-end route with designer jewelry by Tom Binns and Stella McCartney, as well as designer dresses by Sue Wong.
Even Swarovski crystal is getting in on the act, launching their Underland collection next month, which will feature 17 jewelry pieces selling for $80 to $150. The pieces — which will consist of pendants, necklaces, rings and earrings — will portray iconic Alice in Wonderland imagery, like cups, saucers, teapots, keys, talking flowers, and the ever-popular Cheshire Cat. (The collection will be sold at Swarovski stores, online, and select department stores).
I searched around, but haven’t found any images for the “Underland” collection, which of all things, is what I’m excited about (I have quite the little Swarovski collection myself) [...]

‘Pirates Of The Caribbean 4′ To Begin Filming This Summer; Blackbeard & Fountain Of Youth Confirmed
With all of the drama that has been going on with Disney, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides — the fourth installment in the franchise — and star Johnny Depp, it’s a miracle that things are still full steam ahead. But as it were, not only is it all moving forward, but the movie is now planning to begin shooting this Summer with Depp ready to go for at least this one last time.
Now, since the ending of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, everyone has expected any additional movies to involve the long-desired Fountain of Youth. We were even informed that the movie would be based on Tim Powers‘ 1987 book that inspired the sub-title, On Stranger Tides, which did involve the Fountain, but still nothing had really been confirmed yet…that I had known about.
As it turns out, Empire Magazine actually spoke to Pirates writer Terry Rossio back in October, and all was confirmed then. [...]

New ‘Tron: Legacy’ Image; Story & Release Details
Some new goodies have been released from Tron: Legacy, The Walt Disney Company’s much-anticipated sequel to their 1982 classic, Tron.
Said goodies include a shiny new publicity image that has been released, and in an interview with MTV, director Joseph Kosinski shared some new details on the characters in the movie, whether the film will play in IMAX, and if this is the beginning of a brand new franchise.
Tron: Legacy is still almost a year away from its December 2010 release, but they’re certainly staying in the public eye and maintaining attention so far. We shall see how that all holds up over the next ten months or so!
The image above was release a while back, but is still fun to check out if you have not seen it. Click on over to the other side to see the brand new publicity image and read some quotes from Kosinski.
The only real story details that the director offered were in regard to Jeff Bridges‘ characters, which of course are his same characters from the original film. Only this time, the computerized version of him will be a little more intelligent. [...]

Watch Now: Red Band Trailer For ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’
For the unaware, there is indeed a new movie on the way called Hot Tub Time Machine, and it looks hilarious. The movie is basically a cross between Old School, Ski School, and Back to the Future. It follows a group of four friends who drink themselves silly and somehow wake up in the year 1986. I guess Dave Attell was right when he called drinking until you black out “time travel.”
The movie stars Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, Rob Corddry, and the perfect and required ’80s throwback casting of none other than John Cusack! Also appearing in the movie is Lizzy Caplan and a couple other potentially amusing ’80s throwback castings in Crispin Glover and Chevy Chase.
A regular family-friendly version of the trailer was released a while back, but we all know that the most fun comes from the Red Band trailers. Instead of choosing, you can click over to the other side now and watch both trailers. If you’re at work, go green; if you’re home alone, definitely go red. [...]

Video: Cherie Currie Meets Joan Jett in ‘The Runaways’ + Teaser Poster
If you don’t know by now, The Runaways are one of my favorite bands of all time, so you can imagine that I’m quite psyched for the upcoming movie based on the 1970s all-girl rock band.
The Runaways, directed by Floria Sigismondi, stars Twilight‘s Kirsten Stewart as a teenage Joan Jett with Dakata Fanning playing the band’s lead singer Cherie Currie. A new clip from The Runaways has been released (watch it here below) which shows how the young Currie first met the totally badass Jett along with Runaways mastermind, manager Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon).
Also debuting exclusively today over at MTV is the teaser poster for the film, which will be released in theaters on March 19, 2010. The Runaways will actually play first at the Sundance Film Festival this Sunday.
If you’re not sure what the teaser poster means, it’s a nod to the band’s most popular tune “Cherry Bomb.” [...]

Surrogates, based on the Top Shelf graphic novel The Surrogates by Robert Venditti, stars Bruce Willis as a cop in a future where people don’t leave the house. Instead, they interact through the world by using robots or “Surrogates.” But now, someone has found a way to kill the users and Willis has to track down the killer before the whole system collapses.
Surrogates arrives on DVD and Blu-rayon January 26, 2010. To prepare you for the release, we have some facts to pass along to you about Surrogates that you may not know, along with some behind-the-scenes photos from the film [...]

Jason Momoa Is Marcus Nispel’s New Conan The Barbarian; Mickey Rourke To Play His Father?
Deadline Hollywood is reporting that a decision has finally been made on who will star as Conan the Barbarian and fill the shoes once occupied by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the new Marcus Nispel remake, Conan.
Initial word indicates that Jason Momoa will be the man wielding the massive sword, after he beat out other candidates Kellan Lutz of Twilight fame, and Jared Padalecki, who starred in Nispel’s Friday the 13th reboot. Apparently the selection of an actor was close, but Nispel filmed some test footage recently with Momoa swinging a giant sword around and this was enough to wow the executives at Lionsgate, winning him the prize.
Momoa is obviously a large gentleman. He may appeal well to some of the geeks out there due to the fact that he is perhaps best recognized from his work as Ronon Dex on Stargate: Atlantis. Aside from that, he hasn’t done too much. He was on Baywatch for a while and went on to appear on North Shore (dude’s from Hawaii and likes to surf, leave him alone). In the future, along with Conan, Momoa does have another appearance as Dex in the Atlantis movie, Stargate: Extinction. [...]

This Month In ‘Previews’: January 2010 Issue
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | January 21st, 2010 at 8:56 pm |
Here are my picks for items in the January 2010 issue of Previews. Most of these items will be out in March 2010, unless otherwise noted, because some companies love advanced solicitation.
The big section in this month’s catalog is the listing of books that you will be able to pick up on Free Comic Book Day, which is May 1st this year. The big book this year will be DC’s War of the Supermen #0, which looks to kick off DC’s next big event. Marvel counters with an Iron Man/Thor book written by Matt Fraction with art by John Romita Jr. Fans of David Peterson’s Mouse Guard will want to pick up the Archia book, which will have an all new Mouse Guard story. Red 5 comics is back with another new Atomic Robo story, which will hopefully be as good as last years. Finally, Wizkids! will have a new War Machine figure for their Marvel Heroclix game. All in all, it looks like there will be a nice selection for this year’s FCBD.
The big book from Dark Horse this month is The Guild #1. Fans of the internet series staring Felicia Day will rejoice at this, since its being written by Day herself. The thing that has me interested is the art by Jim Rugg, whose art I’ve enjoyed since reading Street Angel. The only other thing I’ll pick up from Dark Horse will be volume 8 of Conan, collecting the next batch of issues [...]

Conan O’Brien & NBC ‘Tonight Show’ Settlement Made Official
It’s been rumored for days and days now, but today it was made official: NBC and Conan O’Brien have officially finalized a settlement that pays him a large monetary sum and effectively removes him from The Tonight Show so that former host Jay Leno can take it back over and try and regain the ratings they once had.
Details of the agreement state that NBC will actually have to shell out about $50 million to make all of this disappear. One of the big issues was that Conan not only wanted a large sum for himself, but he felt that his entire staff deserved to be compensated as well, especially considering that many of them moved to L.A. with him when his seven-month stint on The Tonight Show began. All-in-all, it looks like O’Brien will take down about $33 million for himself, with the rest going toward the 190 staff members. It also appears that O’Brien offered a chunk of his own payoff to go toward his team members, so he may have been initially in the $40 million range. [...]

Poll: AMC’s ‘Walking Dead’ Vs MTV’s ‘Dawn of the Dead’?
For years it seemed like television networks weren’t interested in bringing the zombie apocalypse to the small screen. Honestly, I can see why, too. Zombies are sort of like the grandfather of all horror movies so when TV executives hear of an entire program devoted to the undead, it sounds hokey… or at least it did.
Recently AMC commissioned a pilot for Walking Dead, the ultra popular Image comic book series created by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore. This is the first real development for a TV-series based on zombies, but there have been rumors that MTV was in talks to produce another based on George Romero’s classic film Dawn of the Dead.
The world has never known one zombie prime time hour, let alone two. Since time is valuable and if you were forced to choose one… which would win your valuable time? [...]

What Would The Oceanic 815 Crash From ‘Lost’ Look Like On ’24′?
If you’re a fan of ABC’s Lost, then you know that the show likes to jump from one point to the next to the next, then back to a previous point to make sense of the first point, and then maybe to another decade and beyond. That’s just how they do things, and to many (including myself), it’s one of the greatest TV shows ever created.
When the show’s sixth and final season begins on Tuesday, February 2, we can expect a whole lot of the same jumping around. All we can hope for is that when it’s all said and done, we have some solid beginning, middle, end, and some answers to the bigger questions. But think for just a moment about if they did the show a little differently…like maybe in the style of another popular TV show like 24. What would Lost look like in real time? Well, allow us to show you!
SciFi Wire caught wind of a little video from YouTube user pyram1dhead in which multiple scenes from the duration of the show so far are removed and re-edited into a 10+ minute real time look at Oceanic 815′s fateful crash on the mysterious island. [...]

Bruce Campbell To Battle Frankenstein In ‘My Name Is Bruce’ Sequel!
Bruce Campbell is one of the biggest b-movie cult status stars roaming the earth today. He’s not likely to ever win an Oscar, but he is considered to be a god among men to many, and this is something very few Oscar winners can lay claim to.
Because of the Evil Dead and Army of Darkness star’s status, people pretty much go nutty for anything they find out he’s doing, whether it be a cameo in the Spider-Man movies, or his own new b-flicks like Bubba Ho-Tep. In 2007, Campbell did a small cult movie called My Name is Bruce. The movie took place in the small town of Gold Lick, Oregon, whose not-so-bright teenagers desecrated a cemetery, accidentally resurrecting the Chinese god of war and protector of the dead, Guan-di. In a desperate effort to stop the undead being, one of the townspeople calls on his hero, Bruce Campbell, to come and save them, just like he does in his movies! [...]
