Massive Awesome #1
Written by Stephen Lindsay
Art by Rolf Lejdegard
215Ink
Price: $2.99; Release date: February 19, 2010
You will believe a piece of bacon can kick ass.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I heard the title for this book. I mean, Massive Awesome? That could be anything, and when you name your comic something like that you better live up to it. Well, this one has lived up to that title, and if you’re a fan of goofy action films, then this is the kind of comic that you will enjoy. What lies in the pages of this book is the tale of a renegade special forces operative who just happens to be a piece of bacon. Oh, and his best friend is a pickle who thinks he’s a zombie, but really isn’t. And they fight ninjas. Have I got you yet?
Yes, this book is goofy as hell. There’s no greater meaning to the plot, there’s no great mystery to solve. This is Schwarzenegger’s Commando in comic form. This can be said of a lot of the stuff that writer Stephen Lindsay writes. If you’ve read his other work, he always finds a way to bring the fun to every project he works on. There is just something about the concept of this book that puts a smile on my face when I think about it. And of course, if you are a fan of Lindsay’s Jesus Hates Zombies series, you’re going to have to pick this up for the full-color back-up story in the issue [...]

IDW To Release ‘A-Team’ Movie Tie-In Comics
 |
Posted by Vactor | February 22nd, 2010 at 11:57 pm |
Are you eagerly anticipating the upcoming summer movie event The A-Team? Can’t wait until the film hits theaters June 11, 2010? Well I’ve got good news for you!
IDW Publishing is partnering with Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising (Fox Licensing) to launch two A-Team comic book series this March, entitled A-Team: Shotgun Wedding and A-Team: War Stories. Each comic will be an original story written and illustrated by some of the industry’s biggest names. Each series will be available as single issues in March and April, and collected into individual graphic novels in May and will give fans an in-depth look at the upcoming action-adventure film from Twentieth Century Fox, which will be released in theaters June 11, 2010.
Tom Waltz (editor and co-writer on the comic) had this to say:
“Like many, I was a huge fan of the original A-Team television series in the 80’s. I’m happy to report, after reading the new movie script, the updated A-Team movie has all the wit, swagger and kick-ass action of the original series, but tells a story much bigger than was possible on the show. For our comics, we’ve worked directly with the filmmakers to build a solidly action-packed foundation for a new generation of A-Team fans.” [...]

Video Exclusive: Kim Harrison Talks ‘Black Magic Sanction’
 |
Posted by Empress Eve | February 22nd, 2010 at 10:53 pm |
Black Magic Sanction, the latest book by Kim Harrison, arrives in stores tomorrow and to get you ready for the release, we have an exclusive video of the author talking about her new book.
Watch the video here below!
Black Magic Sanction is the 8th book in the author’s Rachel Morgan (also referred to as The Hollows) urban fantasy series about a bounty hunter-witch who battles supernatural beings of both human and non-human origin in a modern-day alternate history setting.
In this latest book, Rachel goes beyond the usual vampire and demon hunt as this time she must go up against her own kind, who seek to imprisonment the witch or worse! To win her freedom, she must enlist the help of her enemies, but can she trust them?
I’ve been researching some upcoming fantasy novels and had only a slight knowledge of the Rachel Morgan books, but when I mentioned her books to some of my friends, it turns out they all highly recommended the series. After watching the video and seeing how much the author loves her work and especially her characters, you can’t help but want to see what this series is all about. It seems like just about every supernatural being from out of a D&D handbook makes an appearance and I’m intrigued to see how such characters are integrated into a modern-day setting [...]

Kevin Smith Grabs Seann William Scott For His Hockey Movie ‘Hit Somebody’
For those who are unaware, director and fanboy favorite Kevin Smith is a major fan of the sport of hockey, and that makes him even cooler than he already was.
After his upcoming movie Cop Out — the first movie that he did not also write and produce — comes and goes, it looks like his next film will be a hockey film called Hit Somebody.
While talking hockey with NHL.com recently, Smith revealed that he had found his leading man, named Buddy, and it will be Seann William Scott.
Seann, for me, was the key into the character,
This dude has something in him that you can just see hangs so well on Buddy. He’s got some pain that’s going to work out well. More importantly he has so much love in his heart. Seann Scott is such an ebullient, happy person who’s just happy to be there. And on (Cop Out) you could see it. On our set the guy is just so delighted to be working, to be making people laugh. But he’s always dismissed as Stifler. This is his chance to shine. [...]

Michael Jackson’s ‘Captain EO’ Reopening At Disneyland Tomorrow!
 |
Posted by Vactor | February 22nd, 2010 at 9:20 pm |
Since we first learned of the return of Captain EO to Disneyland, I’ve been going crazy trying to figure out when the attraction would be back. Disney Parks Blog reported it would be in February 2010 but no specific day was given. Rest easy MJ fans because we only have to wait one more day before, the classic Captain EO attraction featuring the gloved one will reopen.
On Tuesday, February 23, the 3D musical adventure is returning to Disneyland’s Tomorrowland theater in which it debuted. Disney said it will not be able to replicate some of the special effects elements from the original presentation, but it will feature a new 70mm print of the film, and it will sound better than ever thanks to acoustic enhancements made to the theater since the film last played there in 1997.
I’m the biggest Michael Jackson fan you will ever meet and I remember going to Disneyland every year just to see Captain EO. I had the shirt MJ wore in the film, I had the Bad album which featured one of the songs from Captain EO (Another Part Of Me), and I even had a little plush version of the “Fuzzball” character. Speaking of merchandise, I will definitely be picking up some Captain EO products when I visit Disneyland this year [...]

Ian McShane To Battle Johnny Depp As Blackbeard In ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean 4′
Walt Disney Pictures is about to get their new Blackbeard the Pirate; Ian McShane is in negotiations to star as the infamous pirate force in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment in their juggernaut franchise.
McShane would become the new villain in the movie, joining Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa. Penélope Cruz was also recently added to the cast, but details are not known as to who exactly she will play aside from the basic description of being Sparrow’s “foil and equal in many ways.”
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will pick up from where Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End teased us at the end: with the pursuit of the mysterious and elusive Fountain of Youth. It will also be based loosely on the Tim Powers novel, On Stranger Tides, which happened to be a very similar story to the one the wanted to tell, so the rights to the novel were acquired. [...]

Broken Trinity: Pandora’s Box #1
Issue 1 of 6
Written by Rob Levin and Bryan Edward Hill

Cover Art by Tommy Lee Edwards
Top Cow
Price: $3.99; Release date: February 24, 2010
Marvel and DC have been getting most of the mainstream buzz over big event storylines like Blackest Night and Siege, but they aren’t the only game in town when it comes to crossover events. Top Cow has debuted several crossovers in recent years that have introduced major changes for their characters, and that trend looks like it will continue in 2010.
For those who haven’t been following Top Cow closely as of late, the trend began with a mini-series called First Born. That series saw the birth of a daughter to Sara Pezzini and Jackie Estacado, better known as Witchblade and The Darkness, respectively.
In 2008, First Born was followed up with a mini-series called Broken Trinity. This event established Witchblade, Darkness, and an angelic warrior known as Angelus as the three primary forces in Top Cow’s supernatural universe. Their individual weapons became known as artifacts and by the end of Broken Trinity we found out the three were not alone, and that a total of 13 artifacts existed in the world [...]

Game Review: Dragon Age: Origins (Playstation 3)
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | February 22nd, 2010 at 9:02 am |
Dragon Age: Origins
Platform: Playstation 3
Developer: Bioware
Publisher: EA
Release Date: November 2, 2009
I’ve never played too many American developed RPG’s before, I’m much more of a Japanese RPG fan, but I needed a game to fill the time before Final Fantasy XIII came out, so I decided to pick up Dragon Age: Origins for my PS3. Am I happy with my purchase? Well, more or less. The game has some flaws to it, but there are also good points as well, and there’s plenty to do in the game, so I feel like at least I got my money’s worth.
Dragon Age takes place in a pretty standard fantasy realm. There are dwarves and elves and magic and as the title says, dragons. You take the role of a Gray Warden, one of the last of a group of people who defend the land from the demonic swarms of the dark spawn. After a political coup disrupts the land, you must travel around and unite an army in order to find the oncoming menace. That’s more or less the basic plot for the game, and if you’ve ever wanted a video game based on George RR Martin’s Song of Fire and Ice this is pretty close to it. The story is certainly one of the high points of the game. It’s very strong and there are a lot of interesting characters that you will want to follow. There are almost too many interesting characters, because I found myself wanting to see how every one of the playable characters reacted to the events of the story, but you can only see the reactions of three of the characters at a time [...]

Newly promoted Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment Geoff Johns has confirmed via his Twitter account, that the upcoming Green Lantern film has found its Sinestro in Mark Strong.

Comic Review: Tracker #1
Tracker #1
Written by Jonathan Lincoln
Art by Francis Tsai
Letters by Troy Peteri
Design by Phil Smith
Top Cow
Release date: November, 2009
Thanks to a certain popular book and movie series, werewolves have suddenly become the new vampires. Soon, furry and fanged beast men will be saturating the pop culture environment to the point of annoyance. There will be little 12-year-old girls pinning up wildlife posters on their walls, full moon jewelery will become hip, and every movie, book, comic book, concept album, stage play, and mime act that involves werewolves will be instantly greenlit.
Which brings us to Tracker, the new five-part comic book miniseries published by Top Cow. It opens at a grizzly crime scene on a bus, with blood and guts soaking through the seats and splattering the windows. It’s the latest attack by a vicious serial killer named Herod, pursued ‘doggedly’ by Agent Jezebel Kendall and her partner Alex O’Roark. O’Roark is the only survivor of the attack, but he has been covered in scratch-like lacerations that all ‘mysteriously heal.’ He begins to show signs in the hospital of infection from a strange disease and the predictable fur and fangs ensue [...]

DVD Review: ‘The Box’
The Box
DVD | Blu-ray
Directed by Richard Kelly
Starring Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, Frank Langella, Sam Oz Stone, James Rebhorn
Warner Home Video
Release Date: February 23, 2010
Your home is a box. Your car is a box on wheels. You drive to work in it. You drive home in it. You sit in your home, staring into a box. It erodes your soul, while the box that is your body inevitably withers… then dies. Where upon it is placed in the ultimate box, to slowly decompose.
Place yourself in this situation for just a moment: a mysterious man with a disfigured face and friendly demeanor shows up at your doorstep. The man has but a very simple offer for you: there’s a box with a button on it; push the button once, and you will receive one million dollars in cash and tax-free. The only trade-off is that if you accept this offer, someone somewhere on the planet that you do not know will somehow die. It could be a child; it could be a serial killer.
Do you push the button?
Before even beginning The Box, I pondered this question many times over. It could perhaps be the perfect psychological question to ask, and I doubt anyone could truthfully answer it unless the choice was sitting in front of their eyes, waiting for a decision to be made. It seems to me that simply too much is on the line to make that kind of choice, but when certain people are in certain situations in life… consciences can vary greatly [...]

Comic Review: Angelus #1
Angelus #1
Written by Ron Marz
Art by Stjepan Sejic
Letters by Troy Peteri
Logo and Book Design by Phil Smith
Top Cow
Release date: December 23, 2009
First of all, I’d like to know why it’s always the same people who get all the super powers. The same girl gets to be TWO superheroes, and I get squat. It’s completely unfair.
Spinning out of Top Cow’s Witchblade, Angelus follows the continuing story of Danielle Baptiste, former police officer and superhero Witchblade, as she relocates from New York to New Orleans. The relocation has more to do with just a change in scenery: she has now become Angelus, warrior of the Eternal Light, and with her new lesbian lover Finch, she is trying to navigate her new path in life. But she may be caught up in something she doesn’t understand. Her angel second in command Sabine plots behind her back and dispatches a team of warriors into the depths of Hell to retrieve a mysterious object.
Angelus #1 is an interesting comic, but I’m somewhat biased. I usually enjoy any story in any medium that plays with Christian mythologies, so I found Angelus very compelling. In particular, the art by Stjepan Sejic is incredible [...]

Spoiler Talk: The Wolfman
Last weekend was a really poor time for Universal Pictures to release their remake of The Wolfman (remember when it was originally scheduled for theatrical release on April 3, 2009?). It was up against the rom-com powerhouse chick flick Valentine’s Day on Valentine’s Day weekend and the adaptation of the popular children’s book Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Therefore, it’s not surprising that The Wolfman, directed by Joe Johnston, came in third at the box office with $35.5 million — not too terrible, but far below its $150 million budget.
So, there’s a chance you had to take your gal last weekend to Valentine’s Day or your kid to The Lightning Thief, instead of seeing The Wolfman and I’m here to tell you that if that’s the case, you’re missing out. Go this weekend! The film, starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, and Hugo Weaving, is a return to old-school horror where you’re chilled and frightened, as opposed to disgusted and mortified.
If you have seen The Wolfman, then, it’s time for SPOILER TALK! Below are some of my spoiler-filled thoughts on the film, and as always, remember to leave your thoughts about the movie here below in the Comments section [...]

She loved her country. She hated zombies …
London, 1838. Queen Victoria is crowned; she receives the orb, the sceptre, and an arsenal of blood-stained weaponry. Because if Britain is about to become the greatest power of the age, there’s the small matter of the demons to take care of first. Weaving a seamlessly lurid tapestry of royal biography, gothic horror and fist-gnawing comedy – with lashings of glistening entrails, decapitations, and foul demons – it lifts the veil on what really took place on the dark and cobbled streets of 19th-century England, offering a masterly new portrait of a legendary monarch and quite possibly the best Demon Hunter the world has ever seen [...]

The Decade List: The 59 Best Films Of The Past Ten Years – The Final Chapter
NOTE: For structural reasons and to ensure that this list is super-duper pretty at all times, we’ll be posting this same intro for all sections of The Decade List. If you’ve already read all of this, you can just head down to the continuation of our list!
Let’s just get it out of the way right off the ol’ bat: yes, we know it’s been a few months since we left the decade. Most folks undertook this heavy task pre-2010, but we decided that it would be a little bit better to let the new year settle in a bit before hitting you with something of this magnitude.
So here we are, geeks: we’ve officially arrived in FUTURE *cue retro ’50s sci-fi music* and still we have no freakin’ flying cars yet. What’s the deal with that? While it is pretty exciting to be inside of the year 2010 — a year that always seemed unreachable to us mere mortals — we are also exiting another entire decade that leaves us staring at one majorly epic task. That task? To search, dig, locate, retrieve, organize, polish, and present the very best films of the past ten years! [...]

Conan O’Brien To Go On Tour For His Fans Before Choosing New Job?
By now you all know the drama that went down between NBC and The Tonight Show host Conan O’Brien recently, and how the host was pretty much run out of town so that former host Jay Leno could reclaim his throne.
After NBC and Conan reached an agreed upon settlement, part of the deal was that O’Brien would have to wait until Fall before reaching a deal with another network. Many fans wept as the thought of being without the funniest man of the many late night talk show hosts for such an extended period of time, but now comes word that we may just not have to wait that long.
HitFix is reporting that in order to stay fresh and in order to try and give back to his faithful plans, O’Brien is currently pondering the option to go on tour, visiting many U.S. venues and college campuses, and also possibly a run in Europe before he decides which network he wants to sign a contract with. And even though NBC now owns all of the genius Conan came up with over the years, it would still be pretty awesome so go check him out live somewhere near you. [...]

William Shatner Cast In ‘Shit My Dad Says’ TV Pilot
If you’re on Twitter, then chances are you’re already familiar with the Shit My Dad Says account, where a young man named Justin Halpern does nothing but tweet the unintentionally humorous stuff his 74-year-old father spouts.
The account has made the 29-year-old son an Internet star, and now CBS is set to do a TV pilot based on the Twitter account with none other than William Shatner as the titular dad.
Will & Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick will executive produce the pilot, which was greenlit by the network thanks to Shatner’s casting. Halpern co-penned the script with Patrick Schumacker.
Not surprisingly, if the pilot gets picked up for a full series, then the Shit My Dad Says title will be changed [...]
