Saturday Night Live is typically hit or miss and while I always record the show, it’s rare that I watch it ‘live’. But, when I heard that The Hangover‘s Zach Galifianakis was to be the host, I tuned in promptly at 11:30pm last night hoping for the best.
The Obama opening sketch wasn’t all that funny, but once Galifianakis did his opening monologue, that was it. I was laughing every two seconds. I especially liked the parts about his applying ‘chapstick’ and his inquiry about the show’s musical guest. This had to be one of the show’s best opening monologue’s ever.
You can watch the entire opening monologue here below.
The rest of the sketches were all amusing: the shock value of “The Kissing Family” (I knew what was going to happen as soon as they said “We’re a close family”); the musical revue “What Up with That?” (no need for dialogue here, they could have just played the song, which I still can’t get out of my head); and “CNN Reports” (hilariously funny for its closeness to the truth). Oh, and Kenan Thompson’s “Weekend Update” appearance as Oscar-nominee Mo’Nique — good, good stuff!
You can watch all the clips from the show over at NBC.
Yea, the monologue was funny, but only because all of those jokes were old, many almost a decade old. Recycled stand up does not equal a brilliant monologue. Last night’s show was pure rubbish.
