@jon, it's actually not at all like that. This movie breaks narrative constantly with emphasis on the "true" aspect of the tale. The studio was sued, iirc, by one of the Alaska papers for falsifying articles to support the hoax on the movie's website. This movie took the idea beyond BLAIR WITCH and the woefully inadequate PARANORMAL ACTIVITY by deliberately misleading the viewer instead of being vague or snidely allowing the viewer to draw the wrong conclusions. The latter is a game often played and the viewer can be held accountable for jumping the gun; the former is deliberate falsehoods in attempt to milk a few more bucks from the BO. HUGE difference, IMO.

We were... a little less kind with our review: http://www.popbunker.net/2009/11/the-fourth-kind-2009/

ehh its just a throw back to the old school monster movies, where they made claims like "this movie scared someone to death, so if you die we will provide you with a free coffin". Its a movie, even ones that are supposedly based on a true story doesnt even make them true. Do you honestly believe Amittyville horror wasn't made up as a hoax?
