Comic Review: Amazing Spider-Man #625

Henchman21   |

Amazing Spider-Man #625
Writer: Joe Kelly
Artist: Max Fiumara
Colorist: Fabio D’Auria
Letterer: Joe Caramagna
Marvel Comics
Price: $2.99
Release date: March 17, 2010

As much as I have enjoyed recent issues of Amazing Spider-Man, and I have, one of my favorite issues was the return of the Rhino in issue 617. For Amazing Spider-Man #625 the creative team returns and so does the story of the old Rhino and the new Rhino.

If you remember the previous issue in this plot-line, there’s a new more technological Rhino in town and he wants the skin of the previous or “classic” Rhino. And I mean he wants the skin in a creepy, serial killer, “born unto new worlds where his flesh becomes my key” kind of way. However, the old Rhino has given up his old life for the love of a nice woman and wants nothing to do with the whole situation.

That plotline gets revisited with this week’s issue as we get to see the unfortunate end to the situation, and it’s another high light for the series. Writer Joe Kelly is responsible for most of the best of the recent issues of Spider-Man, and you can tell that he enjoys writing these stories, especially when joined by his Four Eyes collaborator Max Fiumara [...]

Comic Review: Wall-E #4

Guy_Jen   |

Wall-E #4
Written by Bryce Carlson
Art by Morgan Luthi
Cover A & B: Morgan Luthi
BOOM! Studios
Price: $2.99
Release date: March 24, 2010

One would assume that if you are reading this review, you most likely enjoy Wall-E, Pixar, and/or BOOM Kids. If this is true than you will definitely enjoy this comic. If you haven’t seen Wall-E than this comic might throw you for a loop because it follows the style of the movie in that in most of the scenes with the WALL-E units, there’s hardly any dialogue and the little dialogue they show all has to be sounded out. As I will discuss in more detail later in the review, this book is amazing for the art alone, as with the movie.

For the first time since this comic started the story is beginning to become more clear and intense. I believe we are hitting an apex in the story and may be finding out a lot of answers to the questions raised in the movie itself. I have really enjoyed all the stories up to this point but this issue has brought it to a whole new level and I have to say it has been ramped up and we finally see some humans for the first time. We also get the pleasure of seeing another new kind of robot that is part of the cleaning project on Earth that seems like an overseer of the WALL-E units. I really think that writer Bryce Carlson has really thought out this story and is invested in the adventure of Wall-E and respecting the story [...]

Disney Moving Forward With Live-Action ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Spin-Off ‘Maleficent’

The Movie God   |

Remember that time way back in January when a rumor hit the ‘net that Tim Burton might be involved with a live-action update of Sleeping Beauty that focuses on the Queen of all Disney villains, Maleficent? Well, that was not a rumor at all; it was in fact very much true, and the studio is officially moving forward with Maleficent.

Disney has re-acquired the talents of screenwriter Linda Woolverton, who just penned Alice in Wonderland for Burton, to begin work on a script for this new project. As stated, indications are that it will be similar to Wonderland with a live-action/motion capture/CGI style and a story that basically switches around the perspective of Sleeping Beauty from good to evil. Woolverton has also done work for Disney on titles like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Mulan.

The downfall to all of this (for some, anyway), is that Tim Burton is not signed or sealed for the project at the moment. He has been interested in it for a long time, but with his never ending list of projects, he may not have the time. [...]

Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’ Finally Greenlighted; ‘Hit Somebody’ To Come After

The Movie God   |

Kevin Smith‘s Red State is a project that has been known for a while, but has never had any luck in moving forward as a movie. Smith is obviously best known for his work in comedy and he has also done some drama in titles like Chasing Amy and Jersey Girl, but Red State promised to be very dark and not at all easy to sell to a mass audience, making it unappealing to financiers.

For a while it looked as if Red State would never be made; Smith moved on to direct Zack and Miri Make A Porno and most recently, Cop Out. At present time, the director was getting ready for his hockey movie with Sean William Scott, Hit Somebody, but it looks like that will have to wait now. In a message posted on his Twitter account, Kevin Smith has confirmed that Red State finally has that green light it’s been seeking for so long.

At the moment, this looks like this means that Red State will film first, and then Smith will go right to work on Hit Somebody before the vacation he’ll badly need at that point. [...]

Geek Discussion: Richard Alpert’s ‘Lost’ Story Plays Out In ‘Ab Aeterno’

The Movie God   |

Tonight was episode 9 of the final season of Lost, and it was indeed a special occasion. The episode was dedicated to the man, the myth, the ageless legend himself: Richard Alpert. Since first meeting Richard (Nestor Carbonell), we’ve always wondered about who he was, and when we discovered that the very same man was the very same age in many different points in time, his intrigue far surpassed all other characters on Lost.

We aren’t a website that typically covers every single episode of the popular shows out there. Usually we just stick to the premiers and finales for seasonal discussion purposes, but this episode is far too good to pass up. It must be discussed, and your thoughts shared!

Obviously there will be spoilers going on here, so don’t click over if you’re not caught up yet. And once again, if you’re not caught up, what the hell are you thinking!? It’s okay — we still love you. Just, ya know…get on that. [...]

Book Review: ‘Bite Me: A Love Story’

Guy_Jen   |

Bite Me: A Love Story
By Christopher Moore
Hardcover
William Morrow
Release date: March 23, 2010

Bite Me by Christopher Moore, the sequel to You Suck and Bloodsucking Fiends, is a romantic comedy in a world where vampires exist. Trust me, I know, another vampire book in the barrage of vampire saturation in all of modern media. Just stick with me for a few minutes and then you can make your judgment.

Being that I have not read the other books in this series I came in with no prior knowledge of any of the characters or their history. The first problem you would normally run into would be confusion from jumping into the middle of a storym but Moore really does a great job of catching everyone up in the first chapter. I was in no way confused and was able to pick right up and delve into the story.

Basically the first two books lead us to a point where Elijah, the old Vampire that turned the character Jody to a vampire in the first book, has left the city. Jody and Tommy, who Jody turned in to a vampire, are encased in bronze by their minion Abby and her boyfriend Stephen Foo. We also get to read about the two cops, Cavuto and Rivera, who basically got payed off to look the other way as the vampires leave town, but soon find out it wasn’t all of them that left and that Elijah left a surprise name Chet, who is a shaved cat that Elijah changed into an evil-minded vampire, behind. Abby and Foo have a lot of trouble headed their way [...]

‘Scream 4′ With Wes Craven Made Official; Release Date Announced

The Movie God   |

We’ve heard quite a lot of talk about a Scream 4 being made, but it always seemed to be writer Kevin Williamson or one of the stars chatting about it and rarely anything official. The biggest question surrounding the movie, which would mark the first flick in the franchise since 2000′s Scream 3, was whether or not director Wes Craven would return. Various reports have seemed to point to Craven coming back, but until today, those were all just a lot of hopes and finger crossing from those involved. And let’s not kid ourselves — since Williamson and Craven were not part of that third movie, their involvement is nothing short of crucial to the success of this movie.

Now, the answer to this all-important question now appears to be a 100% yes. Dimension and The Weinstein Company have put out an official press release, and not only does it confirm Craven’s return, but it also reaffirms the return of stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and gives us a release date for Scream 4. Now we get to wait and see who the new faces they plan to cast will be; will they be known or unknowns? [...]

New Poster For ‘Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ + Video Sneak Peek

Empress Eve   |

With Twilight Saga: Eclipse coming out in theaters in only a few months, we’ve seen very little from the upcoming Twilight sequel.

Now, we have finally two new juicy items from the film: a new poster and a 7-minute sneak peek video.

First up, the full theatrical poster for Twilight Saga: Eclipse featuring everybody’s favorite human-supernatural love triangle — Edward, Bella, and Jacob. Check out the poster here at right and click for the larger full view. The previously released teaser poster gave us no hint as to the look of Eclipse, but with this new poster we can see that Bella (Kirsten Stewart) is now in the forefront with her paramours (Robert Pattinson as Edward and Taylor Lautner as Jacob) behind her. Gone are the brown tones from New Moon which were meant to signify the introduction of the werewolves. As the tagline says, Bella has a choice (actually, several choices) to make and the poster shows that it’s hers and hers alone.

Next up, a 7-minute sneak peek video of the new film that was included in select DVD/Blu-ray editions of Twilight Saga: New Moon, which was released last weekend. Watch the entire video here below and get ready to see plenty of action, including Bryce Dallas Howard as Victoria, the werewolves, and the Volturi, as well as several new characters. The last two minutes of the video is actually a scene from Eclipse of Bella and Edward talking about the choice Bella is about to make [...]

Starz Greenlights New King Arthur Series ‘Camelot’

The Movie God   |

Starz is one of the best channels on TV and On Demand for watching movies, but it looks like they’re more and more ready every day to really jump into the original series game with HBO and Showtime.

The network already has their show Party Down doing well, and their new series Spartacus: Blood and Sand is currently winning new fans every single week, and already has itself a second season ordered and set to begin production some time after the maiden season ends. Now, according to reports, Starz has greenlighted a new series called Camelot, which will be a new take on the tales of King Arthur.

Chris Chibnall, who has been a writer on the highly-popular shows Torchwood and Doctor Who, has been tapped as a writer for Camelot, and Graham King will produce along with Morgan O’Sullivan and Michael Hirst, who created Showtime’s The Tudors.

King has previously been a producer on Gangs of New York, The Departed, and Blood Diamond. O’Sullivan has previously been a producer on Reign of Fire, Veronica Guerin, and King Arthur, while Hirst was a writer on Elizabeth, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and Brad Bird’s San Francisco earthquake movie, 1906. Another Green Lantern Animated Movie In The Works?

Vactor   |

Green Lantern fans have a lot to be happy about right now. Last year saw the release of Green Lantern: First Flight — an animated retelling of Hal Jordan’s first days as a Green Lantern; Blackest Night and the Green Lantern comics are on fire; there’s an upcoming 3D live-action film starring Ryan Reynolds currently filming, and now it looks like there may be another Green Lantern animated film in the works.

Comics Continuum is reporting that Warner Brothers Animation is making another Green Lantern direct-to-DVD animated film that will center around the origins of the Green Lantern Corps, along with the very first ring wielders. Although Warner Brothers has not yet given any type of official confirmation, I suspect it’s only a matter of time before they do.

At the Emerald City Comic-Con last weekend, DC Comics’ Geoff Johns hinted at a Green Lantern animated series, though its unclear whether this is the one he was referring to [...]

John Malkovich, Frances McDormand & Ken Jeong Join ‘Transformers 3′; Pre-Shoots Begin Next Month

The Movie God   |

We haven’t heard much in terms of Transformers 3 since Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hit theaters to a tidal wave of mass disappointment from fans. The third flick in the franchise has been in the news here and there, but with director Michael Bay looking to do something else and lots of drama reported between he and star Megan Fox, it sounded like it would be a long time before we saw it…if ever.

Apparently this is not the case at all. Bay has written a new post on his official blog, and he not only shares three big new names that have joined the cast, but when pre-production will get underway, where the movie will be filming, and even a new Autobot that we’ll see.

The interesting trio that have joined the cast are Burn After Reading co-stars John Malkovich and Frances McDormand, and they’re joined by Ken Jeong.

Malkovich is of course known for many different roles in many different genres from Con Air to Rounders to Shadow of the Vampire and Beowulf. [...]

Chris Evans Reportedly Accepts Offer To Become Captain America

Vactor   |

Who says you can only play one hero in the world of comic book films? Not Ryan Reynolds, who has appeared in a Blade movie, a Wolverine movie, and will be in the upcoming Green Lantern and Daredevil movies. And apparently not Chris Evans.

Last week, Evans had reportedly been offered the role of Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, in The First Avenger: Captain America [read Chris Evans Offered The Role Of ‘The First Avenger’]. It now appears that Evans, who’s previously made us laugh as Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four films, has decided to accept.

There was some question last week whether or not he would accept. It’s a tough decision to make, factoring in the reported nine-picture deal Marvel Studios’ wants the actor to take on. Not only will he need to hold his own film up but the Avengers and other upcoming Marvel releases as well. That’s a huge time commitment to give and reportedly the paycheck wasn’t that enticing either (under $1 million) [...]

Blu-ray Review: The Princess and The Frog

The Princess and The Frog
Three Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo
Directed by Ron Clements, John Musker
Starring Bruno Campos, Jennifer Cody, Keith David, Jenifer Lewis, Jim Cummings
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
Release Date: March 16, 2010

With 3D animated films suffocating the market these days, it truly is a breath of fresh air to watch The Princess and The Frog. Walt Disney Studio’s eagerly awaited return to traditional animation is an impressive 2D animated feature for the studio that mastered the art form so many decades ago.

Directed by John Musker and Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin), The Princess and the Frog moves the classic fairy tale setting to a stylish version of 1920s New Orleans (finally an American fairy tale!). Tiana (voiced by Anika Noni Rose), the first African-American Disney heroine, is not a princess, but a young woman who hopes to fulfill her father’s dream of opening a restaurant to serve food that will bring together people from all walks of life. Tiana may wish upon a star, but she believes that hard work is the way to fulfill your aspirations. Her dedication clashes with the visiting prince Naveen (Bruno Campos) [...]

Comic Review: Siege #3

Siege #3
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Olivier Coipel
Inker: Mark Morales
Colors: Laura Martin
Letterer: Chris Eliopoulos
Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99
Released March 17, 2010

The march towards Marvel’s Heroic Age continues, and with this issue of Siege we finally get the moment that many fans…okay, even that is saying too much. There are so many awesome moments in this book that you can’t turn a page without a surprise, and I don’t want to be the one to ruin those moments for anyone.

I will just say that Brian Michael Bendis pulls out all the stops, and fills the issue with a lot of great dialog. As I said with the last issue, the shorter story length is working very well for this series, forcing Bendis to cut to the chase and focus on the big moments. A problem I had with Bendis’ last two event minis, House of M and Secret Invasion, was that they dragged in the middle. This series does not have that issue, and is much better because of it.

I really hope Olivier Coipel‘s next project is something I want to read, because his art is amazing. Just as Bendis pulls out all the stops, Coipel is taking his work to another level [...]

Game Review: ‘Bioshock 2′ Xbox 360

The Movie God   |

Bioshock 2
Platform: Xbox 360
Developer: 2K Games
Publisher: 2K Games
Release Date: February 9, 2010

The opening of 2007′s Bioshock is one of the best — if not THE best — introductions to a video game we’ve ever seen. Crashing into the ocean, swimming to a mysterious nearby lighthouse, progressing cautiously as you put yourself into the game and wonder where you are. And then, to have your mini-adventure into the city of Rapture viciously halted by the cruel realization that you are not in a friendly place…it was all just so amazing and unforgettable, and there was still twenty great hours of gameplay to come!

The first game was so good that many fans felt that a Bioshock 2 was completely unnecessary, but we were told that one was on the way nevertheless. For me personally, this was fantastic news, and I’ve been excited and anxiously awaiting its arrival. See, when it comes to video games, they’re a platform of entertainment that is perfect for sequels. Yes, a second, third, or fourth game may not be as good as the original, but that doesn’t matter here; games all have to be their own creature. Whether you love or hate Bioshock 2, the original will still always be there to play; but if you love it, then that’s all the more time you get to hang out in that crazy world of Rapture. For me personally, I loved my second visit to the city hidden under the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, and I hope that I get to go there many more times in the future. [...]

Initially he puts it down to everyday things like a creaky house or the ice-maker. The first physical evidence he catches on camera — the bedroom door slowly swinging shut, then slowly opening again — he just thinks is cool to watch back on his laptop. But he records more and more evidence as the nights get worse and he begins to realise how serious their problem is. This movie is what was found on his tapes [...]
