Right now, the following movies are up at Netflix Instant, so if you’re already a subscriber, head on over and watch! If you’re not a subscriber, now would be the time to join. I joined recently just so that I could watch all the Instant movies — totally worth the $9 a month.

If you’re not familiar with these Star Trek movies [*gasp*], let me quickly break it down for you…

– Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan
Awesome, awesome, awesome. It’s my second favorite movie of all time (after Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back). I could watch this movie every day and be a happier person for it. I tweeted last night about my anticipation of this movie coming to Netflix Instant even though I own every possible version of the film already and therefore do not need it on Instant, but nevertheless, having it there lightens my life. In Star Trek II, while on a cadet training mission the original USS Enterprise crew find themselves back in action and faced with an old foe, the genetically enhanced Khan (Ricardo Montalban), who’s out for vengeance against his old nemesis James T. Kirk (William Shatner).

– Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
It’s hard to describe this film without spoilers, as it directly follows the events of Star Trek II so let’s just say the Enterprise crew team up again, but this time, it’s personal. As if their self-imposed mission wasn’t difficult enough, they have to accomplish it while going up against the warmongering Klingons without the backing of the Federation.

– Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
This film too follows up its predecessor, as the Enterprise crew now has to make it back home to Earth from their previous mission and face the consequences of their actions. They soon find out that the Earth is in danger so James T. Kirk and crew have to go back in time to 1986 in order to save their 23rd century home world. This film, which was released in 1986, had an environmental awareness message and centered on saving the whales.

– Star Trek VII: Generations
A valiant effort to bring together the original Enterprise crew led by James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and The Next Generation captained by Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Unfortunately, this film was not so brilliantly executed but it does have a few elements worth watching for like the android Data getting an emotion chip, and the two captains meeting up to battle a new foe (Dr. Soran played by Malcolm McDowell). There’s so much happening in this movie, must of it pretty convoluted, considering all the time warp aspects involved with bringing the two captains together. Also, I must warn you, there’s something about this film that pissed off a lot of fans, and til this day, is a sore subject among us. Most of us just pretend it never happened and often ignore this scenario when referring to Star Trek canon.

– Star Trek VIII: First Contact
This was the second film for The Next Generation cast and the first solo effort for Picard and his crew. In it, the crew must go back in time (do you see a pattern here?) to prevent the Borg from disrupting Earth’s first contact with aliens, which is what led to the birth of the Federation. This film? Excellent, definitely the best among The Next Generation movies.
