 |
Posted by Vactor | April 14th, 2010 at 1:41 pm |
BOOM! Studios is looking to redefine the western genre this June with the debut of their new mini-series Pale Horse.
The story revolves around ex-slave and former Union soldier Cole. A man who holds family above all else in his life. A man who has spent the years after the Civil War building a reputation as the most fearsome bounty hunter in the land. A man whose life is turned upside down when a bounty is placed on his head. When Cole isn’t able to protect his family he goes on a rampage of revenge, leaving only a trail of blood in his wake. With nothing but his horse, his one surviving son and his gun, Cole’s rampage leaves no stone unturned and no culprit alive.
BOOM! Studios Managing Editor Matt Gagnon had this to say about the upcoming mini-series [...]

Comic Review: Incorruptible #4

Incorruptible #4
Written by Mark Waid
Art by Jean Diaz
Colors by Andrew Dalhouse
Letters by Ed Dukeshire
BOOM! Studios
Price: $3.99
Release Date: March 31, 2010
I have been reading both Mark Waid‘s Irredeemable and his Incorruptible since issue 1 on both of them. I have enjoyed Irredeemable immensely and started out pretty interested in Incorruptible with the first couple of issues. I am definitely still interested in where the story goes because after as many issues of Irredeemable as there have been, I am confident that Waid knows where he wants to go with this story. My only problem is that I don’t find myself connecting to the characters in the same way in this part of the universe.
As the story continues we get to see more about how Max Damage decided to change from world’s greatest villain to hero during the Plutonian’s massacre. As this unfolds we also see that Max has a few things he would like to look in to for his path to being a hero. I find that I am more interested in the Police Lieutenant, Louis Armadale, and the psychology behind Max Damage and his redemptive goals than I am anything to do with Jail Bait. She is a little bit annoying and hard to relate to for me [...]

Silent 1913 Abraham Lincoln Film ‘When Lincoln Paid’ Discovered In New Hampshire Barn
Being born and raised in New Hampshire, I can tell you in all honesty that very little happens here. Peace and quiet you shall find. Beautiful locations and scenery; four seasons and mountains, oceans, and cities all within a short drive are all here to be had, without a doubt. But when it comes to situations and events that grab the attention of the news…well, you probably took a wrong turn somewhere in Massachusetts.
That all being said, something very cool was discovered here a few years back, and it’s now making headlines.
While cleaning out an old barn in Nelson, New Hampshire that was being prepared for demolition, a man named Peter Massie discovered an old silent film projector and seven reels of nitrate films hidden in the shadows of a corner of the barn. Among these old reels was a 30-minute 1913 short film titled When Lincoln Paid.
Continue on over for more and to see two short video clips from this lost film courtesy of Keene State College.
The movie — directed by and starring Francis Ford — tells the story of a dead Union soldier’s mother who goes to Abraham Lincoln to ask that a Confederate soldier whom she had turned in be pardoned. [...]

Live ‘Star Trek’ Show Coming To Kennedy Space Center In June
CBS Consumer Products and Mad Science have officially announced that a brand new interactive stage show based on the world of Star Trek will make its debut at the Kennedy Space Center this June.
The show will present the best young recruits of the Starfleet Academy on their first day as they try and learn about space travel, living and working in space, and the science and technologies they’ll be using. The show will run 30 minutes and deliver a bunch of special effects, some interaction with the audience, and a lot of very cool space technologies we really use.
The show is meant to be a lot of fun, of course, but it will also teach audiences all about the science and technologies of space using the massively popular and familiar Star Trek as the perfect tool for a fun and interesting show.
Chief Operating Officer of the Space Center Visitor Complex, Bill Moore had this to say. [...]

Surprise! ‘Firefly’ Creator Joss Whedon To Direct ‘The Avengers’
When it comes to fanboys, no one is better suited for any job you can think of than Joss Whedon. The writer/creator/producer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse has developed an army of followers who will love him to the end of time.
Marvel Studios has apparently realized this faithful following and how much Whedon is just a geek and fanboy himself. According to Deadline Hollywood, the maker of epic comic book movies is in final negotiations with Whedon to direct The Avengers, which is the film that will bring all of these massive characters and storylines into one film.
This comes as a major shock to most people. While Whedon is a genius writer, he has only directed one feature in his career — 2005′s Serenity. He has, on the other hand, directed many television episodes, including 22 episodes of Buffy, 7 episodes of Angel, 3 episodes of Firefly, 3 episodes of Dollhouse, and even episodes of both The Office and Glee. Oh, and let us not forget Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. [...]

Fighting Off Zombies The Regency Way
By Steve Hockensmith
Keeping the undead at bay has never been easier. Thanks to such visionaries as George Romero and the National Rifle Association, we all stand ready for any onslaught of flesh-craving ghouls. My basement bunker is packed wall to wall with automatic weapons, ammo, and grenades, and I’m sure yours is, too.
Bring it on, coffin jockeys! America’s got your brains right here!
Once upon a time, however, fighting off zombies wasn’t so simple. Today, with our common household Glocks, Uzis, and AK-47s, it’s easy to forget the challenges our ancestors faced when fending off their slavering, shambling, brains-craving neighbors. Not only were such miracles of modern science as the tommy gun and the Claymore mine still but wistful dreams, the manners and morays of the day often made zombie-killing even more difficult than it had to be.
I recently found myself with reason to dig into the undead-dispatching ways of our forefathers when I was asked to write Dawn of the Dreadfuls, a prequel to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. As my book would be a lightly fictionalized account of the trials and tribulations of the Bennet family, a real-life clan of English zombie slayers active during the Regency era, I had to acquaint myself with the zombie-killing methodology of the early 19th century. What I found were two very different approaches. On the one hand was the pragmatic if hard-to-master discipline known as “the Deadly Arts” — the Eastern-influenced fighting skills the young ladies of the Bennet family would be forced to learn in the course of my book [...]

The Trailer Park Boys are Ricky, Julian, and Bubbles. When the film begins, they are being released from jail after serving two-year sentences. However, when they return to their beloved Sunnyvale Trailer Park, the whole place is deserted. Most of Sunnyvale’s tenants have moved to a new trailer park run by their archenemy Jim Lahey and his boyfriend Randy. Lahey wants to run a sewer line through Julian’s property, so he keeps trying to bribe him into selling the land. Julian refuses because he has used his land to open his new business, the ironically named Success Auto Body Shop. Eventually, Julian creates a crazy, illegal scheme to save their home and the hijinks begin [...]

‘Predators’ Writers Hired To Pen He-Man Flick ‘Masters Of The Universe’
Fans of He-Man have not been thrilled with the way things have gone in trying to make a new movie based on the powerful prince hero these past few years. Nevertheless, studios keep on trying, and Columbia Pictures has hired Mike Finch and Alex Litvak to write a shiny new script for Masters of the Universe.
A new, re-envisioned take on the He-Man character using modern filmmaking technologies has been floating in purgatory for quite a while now. At one point we even had a script that was getting great feedback and being compared to The Lord of the Rings as well as Kung-Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson set to captain the movie, but alas, even that was killed, revived, and killed again within the gears of the Hollywood machine.
Finch and Litvak are currently making a name for themselves as the writers behind Robert Rodriguez’s Predators, and they have other noted projects on the horizon such as Medieval, which they both worked on, and the latest retelling of The Three Musketeers, which Litvak was part of. [...]

‘Family Guy’ Creator Seth MacFarlane To Voice & Direct R-Rated CGI Bear In ‘Ted’
Seth MacFarlane has made quite a name for himself over the last decade. It all began in disastrous fashion when his new show Family Guy ended up canceled by Fox after a few seasons. Thankfully, it found an massive following on DVD and eventually was revived. After that, the show caught fire and MacFarlane ended up bringing a new show to the network called American Dad, and eventually signing an unbelievable $100 million deal.
One thing that MacFarlane has not done over the years is direct a movie, but that’s all about to change now. Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to Ted, a movie developed by Media Rights Capital and written by MacFarlane, Alec Sulkin, and Wellesley Wild.
MacFarlane with make his feature directorial debut on the film, which is said to be a live-action/CGI hybrid about a man and his teddy bear, named Ted. While this sounds like it could be a movie based on the popular toy Teddy Ruxpin that would join the likes of Alvin and the Chipmunks, Scooby-Doo, The Smurfs, and other popular old cartoons and characters that have gotten this same treatment, Ted will be just a little bit different. [...]

Drumroll Please… Conan O’Brien’s New Show Will Be On TBS
Well now — no one saw this one coming.
After all of that madness with NBC, The Tonight Show, and Jay Leno ended with Conan O’Brien without a job, we all knew he would eventually end up somewhere else. At the time, and equally as much since then, it appeared that the likely destination of O’Brien would be Fox, who had been trying to break into the late night talk show game for a long while now and had been courting the popular host.
It would appear now that something did not go right, as TBS has sent out a press release reporting that they have officially acquired Conan for a new show that will begin in November. The show will air Monday through Thursday at 11PM and will be followed by George Lopez’s Lopez Tonight, which will move back to the 12AM time slot. This sets up what many think to be a strong 1-2 combo for the TBS late night lineup. [...]

WonderCon 2010: Tips On How To Become A Convention Booth Babe
Usually I avoid interaction with the booth babes — the attractive girls who hang out around a particular booth during a convention — when I attend big shows like WonderCon for a variety of reasons.
These girls are constantly having to stay on guard against socially reclusive fanboys who fall in love easily, which means their defenses are up (as they probably should be). Also, most of them aren’t any more geeky than the average Jane — meaning their knowledge of what’s presented at the booth is limited and thus of little interest to someone looking for information (like say… a journalist). Not to mention that I am not Chris Gore, so there’s never any swooning.
But when a booth babe actually is a geek, it really tends to make a difference.
This was the experience I had when checking out the True Blood booth at this year’s WonderCon, which featured samples of Tru Blood, the beverage consumed by vampires in the hit HBO drama. They were being served by, you guessed it: Booth Babes, including Meghan who asked if I wanted to drink her blood, posed for a picture, and then thanked me for it [...]

WonderCon 2010: Cosplay Photos
So in case you missed the mention at the beginning of WonderCon 2010 coverage, blogger Great White Snark and myself had a friendly competition going to see who could produce the best of the best cosplay photos.
Well GWS kicked my ass as he predicted.
Mr. @TChed will capture cosplay photos at #WonderCon this weekend that will be far inferior to mine in both quality and quantity.
Ok, I sort of knew this would happen since I’m not a photographer and was equipped with only my shitty iPhone 3G camera. (Plus, my assignment at the Con was to cover movie, TV, and comic book panels, which meant lots of waiting and sitting in large rooms, with very little Con floor time to patrol for good photo ops). But based on Snark’s logic, I thought it could only propel his photo features further, which it did.
Fans of attractive costumed women would do well to check out Great White Snark’s WonderCon 2010 Costume Gallery [...]

WonderCon 2010 Video: Kevin Smith Q&A – ‘Red State’ Details, The Govenator & More
After a four-year hiatus, writer/director Kevin Smith made his triumphant return to WonderCon for his usual convention Q&A where anything goes.
And for Smith, usually that does mean anything, including how to work for his View Askew production company, why convenience store services won’t deliver to his California home, and a conversation he had with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger that may have resulted in the state’s push to legalize marijuana.
If there was any newsworthy bits to the session, it was in response to a fan question about Smith’s upcoming film Red State, which has been described as very dark non traditional horror that only recently got greenlit by the studios. [READ: Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’ Finally Greenlighted...]
Smith said Red State draws heavily from the 1975 horror film Race with the Devil, which is about two couples vacationing together in an R.V. from Texas to Colorado who are terrorized after they witness a murder during a Satanic ritual.
We went ahead and embedded Part 1 of the Q&A below, which contains the full description of Smith talking about Red State for any who want to get the full effect. You should also check out parts 2-10 on the Geeks of Doom YouTube channel [...]

Green Lantern’s Suit To Be Completely CGI In Upcoming Film
As it’s been previously reported, Warner Bros. has started production on a feature-length film adaptation of DC Comics’ Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds cast as Hal Jordan.
What you don’t know is we won’t be getting any pictures of him in full costume anytime soon — or technically ever, according to /Film Editor Peter Sciretta, who states that he has three independent sources confirming that the GL suit will be mostly computer generated.
From /Film:
The suit that Ryan wears on set is a grey tracking motion/performance capture suit with led lights. I’ve heard that Ryan Reynolds has been joking on set that Warner Bros is going to make him into a Na’vi when the final cut is released. His joke, not mine. The Green Lantern suit you will see in the final film will be almost entirely created using computers [...]

Spoiler Talk: Date Night
 |
Posted by Guy_Jen | April 11th, 2010 at 11:24 am |
Is your life monotonous? Do you feel like you are bored of your partner. Well stop whining and go watch Date Night!
I really did not know what to make of this movie when I first saw the preview. I really like Tina Fey and Steve Carell and their comedy style. I really cannot think of an instance where these two have worked together, at least if there was one I never saw it. So I was extremely interested to see what kind of chemistry they have.
The most exciting pull of the whole movie though is definitely the cast. When I watched the preview and saw stars like Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Mila Kunis, Jimmi Simpson, and Common, I knew this movie would have star power at the very least.
Well being that this is a slow weekend for movies this was a nice little story that I really enjoyed. It’s a somewhat unoriginal premise but then takes that and spins it with a more realistic couple and more realistic reaction to a crazy situation. The comedy was great and the improvisation stands out because it really was quite hilarious. Anyways, I am ready to get to the SPOILER TALK, how about you?
Below are some of my spoiler filled thoughts about the film. Don’t forget to add your input at the bottom in the comments section! [...]

Movie Review: Date Night
Date Night
Directed by Shawn Levy
Starring Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Mark Wahlberg, Jimmi Simpson, Common
Rated PG-13
Release date: April 8, 2010
It seems like good comedies are increasingly hard to come by these days. Why bother with decent writing and actors with skilled comedic timing when you can just make pop culture references and poop jokes? Yes, I’m looking at you Friedberg and Seltzer.
Date Night, on the other hand, will probably be remembered as the best comedy of 2010. While the film is already be called this year’s The Hangover, I’m going to just say something that will probably bring me ridicule and debate. Date Night is better than The Hangover. Obviously comedic values are very subjective, but I personally find awkward, fish-out-of-water comedy much more entertaining than drunken wackiness. Each has their place, but I think in the long run Date Night will appeal to more people as The Hangover is more of the definitive “guy movie.”
Date Night stars a powerhouse of comedic talent in Tina Fey and Steve Carell. Carell has proven himself to be a strong comedic lead with The Office and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Fey may just be the most talented comedic writer in television today. While they don’t have much romantic chemistry between them on screen, the plot only requires that they have comedic chemistry, of which they have plenty [...]
