DVD Review: Mad Men Season 3

The Geeks of Doom   |

Mad Men Season 3
DVD | Blu-ray
Directed by Matthew Weiner
Starring Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, January Jones, Christina Hendricks
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release Date: March 23, 2010

Welcome to the world of the Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency.

Mad Men explores the lives of the Madison Avenue ad men of New York City in the 1960’s. Don Draper (Jon Hamm), agency director, is the focus of the hour-long drama and the people involved in his personal and professional life.

The series, as a whole, is fantastic and accurately portrays the events of the 1960s. The DVD set offers much enjoyment for new and old fans of the show. The third season was great because the show depicts a historically accurate view of the 1960s. Another good thing about Mad Men is that each season has thirteen episodes which keeps the show focused and on track. The audio commentaries provided the perfect insight into how each episode was made [...]

Comic Review: Cloak and Dagger #1

The Geeks of Doom   |

Cloak and Dagger #1
One-shot
Written by Stuart Moore
Cover and art by Mark Brooks
Colors by Emily Warren
Letters by Dave Sharpe
Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99
Release Date: March 31, 2010

I have always been a bit of a Cloak and Dagger fan, and I have been pleased to see them in more Marvel Comics lately. They were duped by Norman Osborn into joining his Dark X-Men, but came to their senses and joined the real X-Men team. I was really excited about my favorite duo on the team. For the uninitiated, Cloak and Dagger were two runaway kids living on the streets who were kidnapped and injected with drugs. These drugs transformed Tandy Bowen into Dagger, a creature of light energy, and Tyrone “Ty” Johnson became Cloak, a creature powered by Darkforce who teleports and absorbs energy, usually from humans, to survive.

The story for this Cloak and Dagger #1 one-shot opens with Dagger training with the Young X-Men and fitting in pretty well on Utopia, the X-Men’s island headquarters off the coast of San Francisco [...]

Atari Apocalypse: ‘Donkey Kong’ & Other Classic Arcade Games Invade New York In ‘Pixels’

The Movie God   |

A super-duper-awesome new video has hit the web with a vengeance, and it’s from French director Patrick Jean and Paris visual effects studio One More Productions.

The short film is called Pixels, and it basically shows many different classic arcade games taking over New York City. You’ll see Space Invaders space crafts shooting vehicles below, Tetris blocks interlocking with buildings, Pac-Man eating his way through the subway, Donkey Kong tossing barrels from the top of the Empire State Building, and more.

Dust off your Atari and click on over to the other side to witness Pixels immediately! This is an absolutely can’t-miss video from anyone who’s danced with the godfathers of video game history.

Even cooler — when these video games take something out as they would in their respective games, that object becomes pixelated itself, and breaks down into many little pieces (kinda like those Skittles commercials, but with pixels!).

As cool as this video is, I’m not sure I would enjoy experiencing this chaos. Those Tetris blocks are freakin’ vicious, man. [...]

Want To Turn Your House Into The USS Enterprise? Massive ‘Star Trek’ Yard Sale Is For You!

The Movie God   |

So you’re a Trekkie, eh? These are the days that you dream of.

A company in Las Vegas called Propworx is preparing to sell around a thousand different items from Star Trek: The Experience, which ran for ten years and shut down in 2008. The many items will apparently be sold via auction and in a giant warehouse (okay, so it’s not really a yard sale, but close enough) tomorrow.

The attraction featured many replications and props from the Trek universe, and also featured some popular rides. These rides included an encounter with the Klingons and even a 4D Borg attack.

There’s good and bad aspects to all of this. The good is that these are just replicas, so most of the stuff is pretty affordable to all. The bad part is that if you don’t live in Vegas, you might just miss out on a lot of the goodies!

Once I discovered the above-linked Propworx website (where you can go and see lots of images and gain info on the sale), however, I did find out that there was still a way for you Trekkies around the country to still get your hands on some treasures…if you’re lucky. [...]

‘Danger Girl’ Comic To Get Big-Screen Adaptation

Empress Eve   |

A big-screen adaptation of the Wildstorm comic book series Danger Girl is in the works with Todd Lincoln directing, according to a Hero Complex interview with its producer Adrian Askarieh.

Askarieh, who’s currently producing Relativity’s film adaptation of Devil’s Due Publishing’s Hack/Slash, described the planned Danger Girl movie as “Kill Bill meets Raiders of the Lost Ark with the “team” element of Mission: Impossible.”

The Danger Girl comic book series debuted in 1998 from creators J. Scott Campbell and Andy Hartnell, and has Campbell’s now distinctive buxom hot babe artwork. The series follows Abbey Chase, a treasure-hunting demolitions expert who joins the top-secret Danger Girl organization in their action adventures. All the ladies are well-endowed and gorgeous, typically wearing tight, revealing clothing, but the difference between these babes and those on Baywatch is that the Danger Girls are highly skilled and intelligent, not to mention lethal [...]

Movie Review: The Runaways

Vactor   |

The Runaways
Directed by Floria Sigismondi
Starring Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Stella Maeve, Scout Taylor-Compton, Michael Shannon
Rated R
Release date(s) January 24, 2010 (SFF)
March 19, 2010 (limited)
April 9, 2010 (wide)

The Runaways is a film is based on lead singer Cherie Currie’s memoir, Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway and it does a pretty good job of showing us what life was like for a teenage Runaway.

For those uninitiated (like myself before seeing the film) The Runaways were a 1970s rock band that broke musical taboos with their all-girl lineup. While I was watching the film I was thinking about how those same taboos, to a large extent, still exist in today’s musical world. In 2006, I remember Beyoncé Knowles making a huge fuss when she introduced her all-female tour band Suga Mama, which includes bassists, drummers, guitarists, horn players, keyboardists and percussionists. I would’ve thought 35 years would be enough time to break down those male barriers in pop/rock music, but I guess not.

The film is written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, a fashion photographer largely known for her music video direction. Sigismondi does a good job for a first time director but there wasn’t anything special or distinctive about her style [...]

Book Review: Shadow Prowler

The Insomniac   |

Shadow Prowler
Book 1 of The Chronicles Of Siala Trilogy
Hardcover
By Alexey Pehov
Translated by Andrew Bromfield
Tor Books
Release date: February 16, 2010

The first novel of a new trilogy, Alexey Pehov’s Shadow Prowler, is classic sword and sorcery fiction, practically overflowing with wizards, warriors, thieves, and mythological creatures roaming a rich fantasy landscape. With a certain tongue in cheek humour and the traditional quest story arc, Shadow Prowler carries a lot of appeal for traditional fans who enjoy the high fantasy genre.

Shadow Prowler follows the story of Shadow Harold, a thief given the task of reclaiming a magic Horn to keep the black evil of the Nameless One from consuming the kingdom of Siala. Teamed up with an Elfin Princess, ten members of a legendary warrior troop known as the Wild Hearts, and a goblin jester, they must make their way through an underground labyrinth composed of the bones of the dead to reclaim what’s been stolen from them by demons hoping to unleash their evil master [...]

Contest: ‘Neon Angel: A Memoir Of A Runaway’ Book

Empress Eve   |

The Runaways, which stars of Kirsten Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning at Cherie Currie, is based on Currie’s autobiography Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway, so to celebrate the film’s wide release in theaters this weekend, we here at Geeks of Doom have five (5) copies to give away to some lucky readers!

Five (5) winners will each receive:

One (1) copy of Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway

I’ve read the book and trust me, it’s a good one. Currie talks about her upbringing and then goes into detail about her time with The Runaways, which was an all-girl teenage rock band in the 1970s and if you see the movie (which I suggest you do), you’ll see how just how hard these young girls had it and what they did for rock and roll. Currie’s original version of the autobiography has been out of print since the 1990s, but thanks to It Books, the book is not only back in print, but has also been improved upon. I now only three copies of this book (2 of the original; one of the new version), so yeah, I’m lovin’ this contest. So, enter to win!!!

Cherie Currie, with her signature Bowie haircut and fishnet stockings, was the groundbreaking lead singer of ’70s teenage all-girl rock band the Runaways. At the tender age of fifteen, she joined a group of talented girls—Joan Jett and Lita Ford on guitar, Jackie Fox on bass, and Sandy West on drums—who could play rock like no one else [...]

Must Watch: Carl Erik Rinsch Short Film ‘The Gift’

The Movie God   |

Carl Erik Rinsch has only really directed commercials so far, but his name became known when it was announced that the Ridley Scott understudy would be directing the prequel of the 1979 horror classic, Alien.

Eventually we found out that Scott himself would instead be taking over the Alien project for Fox, which was great news for fans of the original but not so good news for Rinsch. So what has the rising director gone on to do since then? Well, a little short film called The Gift (no, Keanu Reeves in not in it), and it just so happens to have studios in a bidding war to acquire the rights to develop a feature film based on it.

Be sure to continue on over to the other side to watch the short film. It’s very much worth the five minutes of your time.

The Gift tells the story of a gift being delivered in a strange alternate reality Russia. The gift is delivered with no complications, but after it is opened, chaos ensues. [...]

Blu-ray Review: ‘Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day’

The Movie God   |

Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day
DVD | Blu-ray
Directed by Troy Duffy
Starring Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus, Clifton Collins Jr., Billy Connolly, Julie Benz, Peter Fonda, Judd Nelson, Bob Marley, Brian Mahoney, David Ferry, David Della Rocco
Sony Home Entertainment
Release Date: March 9, 2010

If you read Geeks of Doom, you know I’ve been one of the biggest supporters of a sequel to 1999′s The Boondock Saints for as long as one has been rumored, which is about eleven years now. And from the moment Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day became official, any time anything was released about the movie, I was jumping on it. Various different posts came of it all, including interviews with stars Clifton Collins Jr. and Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus.

Because of my love for the first and my being proud of its Boston roots, that made me a likely biased candidate to review the film when it was released on DVD and Blu-ray, but it was in-fact only fitting that I do so. I did enjoy the movie after all was said and done, but surprisingly, there were also things that I was not a big fan of and I’ll be sure to share them all! [...]

DVD Review: ‘Nurse Jackie’ Season One

Jack Bauerstein83   |

Nurse Jackie Season One
Blu-ray | DVD
Starring Edie Falco, Eve Best, Peter Facinelli
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release date: February 25, 2010

On the surface Nurse Jackie looks a lot like another doctor show on television right now. Starring Edie Falco as the titular Nurse Jackie Peyton, viewers get a glimpse into the life of a strong, loving, and yet also hard to love nurse and her rather complicated life. When she is not busy saving lives and making sure idiot doctors don’t get in the way, she is doing her best to keep her rather messy work life from colliding with her already hectic home life. She is also nursing a killer painkiller addiction she is keeping from everyone she knows, as well as another pretty big secret (which I won’t reveal here).

I have to admit, other than this show, I haven’t seen any of Falco’s work on the Sopranos. However, I do know that when an actor from a popular TV show ventures off to headline his or her own series, it is a pretty big deal. Will the show work? Will viewers be able to disconnect them from their previous work and focus on this show? Can this actor even hold a show on their own after being a part of an ensemble this whole time? Luckily, in this case, all these questions can be answered with a resounding yes, thanks in part to a great writing and great acting one-two punch [...]

‘Wolverine’ Mutant Taylor Kitsch To Star In Not-What-You-Expected ‘Battleship’ Movie

The Movie God   |

Before X-Men Origins: Wolverine, we didn’t know much about Taylor Kitsch, and even since his turn as the Southern gambling mutant, Gambit, we haven’t seen him much. But what Kitsch has done since then, is set himself up for some major stardom.

It’s being reported that Taylor Kitsch has been cast to star in Peter Berg‘s feature based on the popular board game, Battleship, in which players strategically place their fleet of ships, and then proceed to fire back and forth at each other until someone’s fleet has been completely submerged. The project is one of a handful of currently in-development films based on Hasbro games and toys.

Aside from his theatrical breakout in Wolverine, Kitsch has mainly been busy as a regular on the hit show Friday Night Lights, which was actually developed by Berg. With that show set to end after its fifth season, other opportunities have begun flowing in steadily. The first big casting that he grabbed was the lead in Pixar alum Andrew Stanton’s much-buzzed science fiction adventure, John Carter of Mars, which many expect to be huge. With the addition of Battleship to his schedule, the sky’s the limit. [...]

Watch Now: 8-Bit Dr. Horrible Act 1

Tom Cheredar   |

There comes a point when a revered piece of work is forever legitimized in its era of pop culture by an extreme act by a very dedicated fan or group of fans.

If winning an Emmy for the best “Outstanding Special Class – Short-format Live-Action Entertainment Programs” [NOTE: I did not make up that category] didn’t legitimize Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog, then the 8-Bit Dr. Horrible version certainly does.

The video looks like it was ripped from a classic Nintendo game in the ’80s and I’m probably not the only one who wishes this game actually did exist so I could play it immediately.

The video has already been mentioned on Twitter by several members of the cast and crew including Neil Patrick Harris (Dr. horrible), Felicia Day (Penny), Jed Whedon, and Nathan Fillion, according to the video’s creator Doctor Octoroc.

He’s pretty candid about the time frame for completing Acts 2 and 3, but does offer plenty of goodies on his personal site like an HD version of the video and a link to download the soundtrack.

Check out the standard quality video of Act 1 embedded below [...]

Geek Peek: Set Photos From ‘Green Lantern’ & ‘The Thing’ Surface

The Movie God   |

Nothing to go dancing around crazy-giddy-happy about, but a couple of images from some exciting upcoming movies that are in the beginning stages of production have been released online.

The first comes from Comic Book Movie, who have gotten their hands on a sneaky photograph from the set of Green Lantern. The movie stars Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, a pilot who discovers a space craft that has crashed and finds himself presented with a special ring, making him the newest member of a group known as the Green Lanterns. The movie also stars Blake Lively as Jordan’s boss and eventual love interest, Mark Strong as the evil villain Sinestro, Peter Sarsgaard as Dr. Hector Hammond, and Tim Robbins, who will play the Senator father of Hammond.

The set image actually shows what is assumed (as you can plainly see) to be the aforementioned space craft that crashes on Earth and sets all of the events of the movie into motion.

Hum a little tune to yourself and frolic over to the other side to check out these two first peeks at these movies. [...]

HBO Sucks You In With ‘True Blood’ Season 3 Promos Galore!

The Movie God   |

The first and second seasons of HBO’s hit vampire show True Blood came and went relatively quickly (or so it felt), but it’s been a bit of a wait for the debut of the third season.

With the show set to return on June 13, 2010, the network has begun releasing many little tease promos to start getting fans ready for another wild adventure in their world of werewolves, shapeshifters, mythological beings, and of course, all of those vampires who prefer slaughter over sparkle.

So far, three posters have been released along with some small preview videos, one of which you can see below and the rest can be seen at the HBO True Blood homepage. A new poster will be released every week leading up to the season 3 premier, which will equal 12 posters in total.

Click over to see the short video (which I think might actually be a couple of months old, but new to me!) and three True Blood Season 3 teaser posters. [...]

Jon Favreau Reveals Harrison Ford Has Joined ‘Cowboys & Aliens’

The Movie God   |

Back on April 5th, director Jon Favreau dropped a tiny little teaser note on Twitter that some juicy casting news would be coming in regards to his upcoming adaptation of the comic book Cowboys & Aliens.

Before that, Latino Review had heard whispers that Harrison Ford was actually joining the cast of a big comic book movie and put the two pieces together. Nothing was official at that point, but Mr. Favreau has finally confirmed once again via his Twitter account that Indiana Jones has definitely joined his movie.

Favreau’s big reveal was simple and straight to the point, as 140-characters can sometimes force you to be. “Please stop asking if Harrison Ford is in Cowboys & Aliens. Okay? He is. Please don’t tell anybody,” he said.

The movie was initially set to star Robert Downey Jr., re-pairing him immediately with Favreau after their completion of Iron Man 2, but unfortunately Downey Jr. ultimately had to remove himself from the project. The last we heard, current James Bond Daniel Craig was in negotiations to step up and take on the lead role. [...]

The Muppet Show Comic Book #4
Written by Roger Langridge
Art by Amy Mebberson
Colors by Eric Cobain
Letters by Deron Bennett
BOOM! Studios
Price: $2.99
Release Date: April 7, 2010

I remembered reading collections of Muppets comic strips as a kid, and this Muppet Show Comic Book series is very much in the vein of those past comics.

The story begins with Statler and Waldorf, the hecklers from the balcony, playing a game of chess with pieces resembling the Muppets. They talk of introducing a new character into the equation. Actually, it’s more of a new/old character. This character was on the Muppet Babies series, but to my knowledge had never appeared as a grownup until now. I don’t want to give away the name of the character, but it was interesting. It was very fun to see this character as an adult Muppet, and it was also cool to see a bridge between the Muppet Babies cartoon and the comics. I had always thought of the cartoon and the Muppet Show as existing in the same universe, and this issue verified that [...]

Codebreakers #1
Creator: Ross Richie
Writer: Carey Malloy
Artist: Scott Godlewski
Colorist: Stephen Downer
Letterer: Johnny Lowe
BOOM! Studios
Price: $3.99
Released April 7, 2010

Spy stories can work great in comics when they’re done well. The realism of Greg Rucka’s Queen and Country, the psychedelia of Jim Steranko’s Nick Fury stories, and the plain insanity of Matt Fraction’s Casanova each offer something unique to the spy genre. Now, we’ve got a new series from BOOM! Studios that is a more or less realistic look at a unique branch of spying, with their new series Codebreakers.

The story follows the members of the FBI Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit, the elite codebreakers for the Bureau. We see a day at the office through the eyes of Stanley Grouse. The first part of the issue is a mundane look at what this group does, but things take a turn when one of the members of the team is filmed committing suicide. That sets the mystery in motion and sets us up for the next issue [...]
