It seems as if the neverending economic crisis is beginning to take its toll on movie theaters. With consumer spending at a dangerously low rate, not only are some department store chains and restaurants closing their doors, but movie theaters, theme parks, and even some sporting events are beginning to lose their american pastime statuses. American shopping and entertainment outings will never be the same again. :(

Normally this would upset me but considering the amount of ignorant people who feel the need to bring babies and cell phones to theaters, I'm rather happy to stay home and not deal with the unwashed masses.

I don't think it would necessarily be the end of movie theaters, but they would certainly suffer because of it. The movies theaters would always be first option for many people, especially with big event movies like Avatar. I would still want to see some movies in the theater, but for 90% of them, my home would be just fine. I could see the latest movies without worrying about a babysitter for my small children without all the time/effort/money it cost. The added bonus of avoiding costly concessions and rude people would be icing on the cake.

Mark your calenders because this is the day I am guaranteeing you the MPAA is only doing this to get control of everyone's electronics. This has nothing to do with the consumer, as it never does with these people.
It's like the studios deals recently with Redbox and Netflix where dvd's are held back for one month so they can rake in more money. It is all anti consumer. It is all a way to make us pay for the same product more than once. In their perfect world we would pay to see a film in theaters, get in on ppv, then buy the dvd or blu-ray. Of course then there is the soundtrack, ring tones, and other merchandise.
Sure I know this all sounds like I am nut job with a conspiracy but it's all out there man, floating in the ether of the world wide web, you just have to reach out, grab it, and open your eyes man (read that using an old hippy voice in your head). :D

I think that it is obvious that this would be a huge blow to the theater industry. However, I don't think that it will be the deathblow that some people believe it will be. I think that we will see a huge growth in niche theaters similar to Studio Movie Grill and Alamo Drafthouse.

We have to recall the fact that going out to the movie theater is a social interaction. Like it was stated in the post, some movies are designed and intended to be seen in the theater. However, I feel that the critical factor of that statement isn't in the technical aspects of seeing a movie in a theater. The critical factor is the group mentality of the audience. Who can say they have never "ooo-ed" and "ah-ed" or jumped and then turned to friend to say "That was scary!" or even clapped? These are all artifacts of the group experience. That is what takes me to the theater and I think others as well.
