The creation of this image was suggested to me by a friend via Twitter, and I immediately thought ‘Horns’ and got to work making it happen.
I created ‘Horns’ to honor of one of the most inspiring people in my life and the lives of many of my friends, the Godfather of Heavy Metal — Ronnie James Dio, who passed away yesterday.
Dio’s bold music scored such a large part of the backdrop of my youth that I can rarely think of good times without thinking of him (Look Out!!).
I was lucky enough to have seen him perform in concert more times than I can rightfully put a number to and I gotta tell ya, every single time I saw him he made that concert seem like the ‘best’ performance of his career.
My friend Greg said it best: ‘Black Sabbath with Ozzy may have created Metal – but it was RONNIE JAMES DIO that made metal a REALITY’
Went on Simon Mayo Drivetime on BBC radio 2 to talk about this image, and Dio & the whole ‘Horns’ phenomenon i Heavy Metal a little while ago. I’m really happy that this is being appreciated. That’s all I wanted.
Sorry but I heard you on Simon Mayo’s show yesterday and you got some facts wrong. You stated Dio was in Sabbath with Ozzy and you saw them on the ‘Black & Blue’ tour in 1978.
As you should know Dio replaced Ozzy in Sabbath and the above tour with Blue Oyster Cult didn’t take place until 1980.
I don’t mean to be pedantic (it’s the British in me) but as a major fan of RJD it’s important all posthumous statements are correct.

Yes. Actually he was touring as the lead singer for Rainbow, the supporting act for Black Sabbath at the time. I did actually know this, but it was a case of ‘the nerves’ (and my current meds) that made my mind go numb just before they said “You’re on the air” to me. My apologies.
And, no I didn’t see him on that tour as I was around five years of age. lol. The first time I saw Dio was about seven years after that tour. =)
