Chris Columbus Gets Behind Neil Gaiman’s ‘The Graveyard Book’

The Movie God   |

Graveyard Book

We’re huge, huge fans of Neil Gaiman here at Geeks of Doom, so it’s always exciting to hear about another one of his wonderful books being turned into a movie. No, it’s not easy to adapt a two-hour film from the incredible stories that this man creates, but even so, it’s worth trying!

The trades are reporting that Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book has finally found some backing. Chris Columbus and his 1492 Pictures are teaming up with CJ Entertainment to bring the story to life. Columbus, of course is a well-respected director responsible for movies like Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

The Graveyard Book tells the story of a young boy who is raised in a cemetery after his parents are murdered, and learns everything that he knows per the knowledge of the ghosts that inhabit the cemetery.

As previously reported, the movie is being both written and directed by Neil Jordan, who’s an interesting choice. Jordan has written and directed The Crying Game, Michael Collins, The End of the Affair, and also directed The Brave One. This is not exactly the name you would first think of when it comes to the adaptation of a fantasy/horror novel aimed toward children and young adults, but it is rather intriguing.

Per Gaiman’s own desires, this will not be animated like his other book, Coraline, was. The Graveyard Book will in fact be a live-action film, which is pretty exciting. Gaiman recently told MTV that “We are waiting for Neil’s [Jordan] next draft of the script” and that the first draft was actually too faithful to his book. (Check out the brief interview in the video here below.)

I really enjoyed The Graveyard Book and I was wondering how long it would be until it was made into a movie. It will be interesting to see how the movie turns out.
