E3 2010: ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. The World’ Video Game Footage

The Geeks of Doom   |

By Merkader

Most of us know Scott Pilgrim from Bryan Lee O’Malley’s fantastic graphic novels. Others know it from the great looking movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World that is about to be released starring Michael Cera.

With E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) starting next week, game publisher Ubisoft wants you to know Scott Pilgrim in another way, as a really cool video game. Game footage was released prior to E3 — which you can watch here below — and it’s just what you would expect. In the Scott Pilgrim books there are a lot of references to old school video games, which is one of the reasons I love the series. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Video Game looks to be taken from the era that the author is referencing.

The game is a side scrolling, multiplayer, button masher. Reminiscent of old games like Final Fight and Double Dragon. I loved those games growing up and I think I’m going to like this game as well.

The game is multiplayer, where you play either as Scott Pilgrim himself, or another member of Sex Bob-Omb, or maybe his roommate Wallace. It’s hard to tell from the footage. It appears that you battle through levels, collecting money as you go. At the end of each stage it looks like you face one of the “evil ex-boyfriends” that you have to KO. Along each level you can use environmental weapons, do combos, and it looks like special moves as well.

Despite the roots of this game lying in the button masher category, the game play does look varied. There is at least one sequence that looks very Guitar Hero, and another where is appears you have to escape rather than face your opponent. All in all, this game looks to be a great addition for Scott Pilgrim fans. The game does not have a release date as of yet, but I know I’ll be grabbing it when it hits Xbox Live Arcade. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Video Game will also be available on the Playstation Network.
