DC Comics Releases iPad/iPhone App
space
Hunter Camp   |

In a surprise twist, DC Comics has shocked the world and joined the digital revolution by releasing their very own iPhone and iPad apps this week!

This application is based off of and made in conjunction with the popular Comixology comic reader that provides the basis for the Marvel Comics and Boom! Studios apps as well, so it seems like Comixology is going to be the source for this medium in the future.

I have yet to see any official press release from DC Comics, but after browsing through the application, I have noticed a few key things. First, a free preview is available for Superman #700, which hits stores today, but there are no other same day releases that I can find. Not only does this application have access to the wide-spanning DC Universe, it also celebrates the strong libraries of DC’s imprint publishers Wildstorm and Vertigo. The application has paid issues from All Star Superman, Planetary, and Fables, but it also has free comics like Batman: Black and White, Fringe, and Mirror’s Edge.

With the official DC COMICS App, you can download and enjoy great comic books from our current weekly offerings plus our vast, legendary classics library. Powered by ComiXology, this app enables you to take advantage of the unique Guided View reading experience or enjoy the pristine, classic full page view. What’s more, you’ll be able to conveniently manage and read your entire collection anytime, whether you’re at your desk computer, laptop or on the move using your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. Experience the amazing world of DC Comics wherever you are!

Many have criticized DC for not jumping on the digital comics bandwagon at the same time as other publishers, but now that they’re diving in, does this change everything? Will this be the final death note for the physical medium? I sincerely doubt it, but Batman’s on my iPhone, and that is totally awesome!

Surely, more details will be released throughout the day when DC provides a press release and people can have some time with the application, but from what I can tell, it is in the same vein as the previous comic reader application, but this one has Batman!

Download the app at iTunes.

[Update] Comixology sent out a newsletter today regarding the new DC digital comics, which are also available on the Web at their site, and added a new DC STORE at their site as well. Also, DC also put out their official press release this morning.]

  2. From what i have read “Justice League: Generation Lost” will be the only title (for now) that will have a simultaneous digital release and paper release. The price for both will be the same.
