SDCC 2010: First Trailer Released for DC Universe: Online

Henchman21   |

Those looking forward to DC Universe: Online got a good look at the game on Saturday at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con as the first teaser trailer was shown for the game. The trailer showed Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Cyborg taking on Cersei, The Joker, Harley Quinn, Black Adam, and Lex Luther in a battle in a bombed out city. After some fantastic action, Superman flies in to save the day, only to find out he’s too late, as Brainiac shows up with an invasion. We then learn that everything we have just seen has been in the future, and we then see Lex Luther go back in time to hopefully spread the power that will enable players to create their own heroes.

Those at the panel were lucky enough to gain VIP codes to access the beta for the game, which will go live on November 2nd. Other things discussed at the panel were the voice cast, which includes Mark Hamill as the Joker, Kevin Conroy as Batman, Adam Baldwin as Superman, James Marsters as Lex Luthor, and Gina Torres as Wonder Woman. The inclusion of Conroy and Hamill is sure to please a lot of fans of Batman: The Animated Series [...]

SDCC 2010: Zack Snyder’s ‘Sucker Punch’ Panel

The Geeks of Doom   |

Director Zack Snyder and his cast of Sucker Punch, his follow-up to his successful Watchmen adaptation, was on hand for the Warner Bros panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con.

Snyder noted that, with his co-writer, he’d been working on the story for 8 years. He was motivated by the desire to create an original property “not based on a breakfast cereal or superglue, or anything like that.”

He then introduced the panel which included Carla Gugino, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, and Emily Browning.

Browning plays Baby Doll, whose mother dies, and is placed by her father in an insane asylum to be lobotomized and needs to discover a way to escape, if only through the world inside her mind. Hudgens plays Blondie, who fires some of the biggest guns in the film [...]

SDCC 2010: Jon Favreau’s ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Footage Description

The Geeks of Doom   |

Jon Favreau came out over a blare of loud rock music, thanked the Iron Man franchise for bringing him here again, and announced that since 3D requires shooting on digital video, and Cowboys & Aliens is technically a western, he wanted to shoot on film, so… the film will not be in 3D.

Favreau introduced the panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, which included Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Adam Beach, and screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Last, but not least, he introduced Harrison Ford, who made his Comic-Con debut appearance. Understandably the crowd went absolutely nuts and gave him a long and rousing ovation. He came out in handcuffs, led by two security guards, a callback to a bit of unpleasantness earlier in Hall H where one attendee allegedly stabbed another over a seating arrangement.

There was an EXTREMELY brief Q&A session in which Ford was asked if when he was growing up, he ever envisioned a Comic-Con reception like this. No, he said, he just wanted to be a working actor. Craig was asked about the future of the Bond franchise, to which he replied that he has no information about it, but he wants it to get going as soon as possible [...]

Watch Now: ‘Dexter’ Season 5 Trailer

Merkader   |

Adding to all the awesome from the 2010 San Diego Comic-con is a trailer for the upcoming new season of Showtime’s Dexter. If you have not seen all of season 4, do not read any further and certainly do not watch the trailer. If you have, and want a sneak peek of the coming season, by all means continue.

You can watch the trailer here after the break.

Dexter is one of those shows that really draws you in, it’s a fantastic show. That being said I’ve been on the fence whether or not I’m going to be watching the new season. The death of Rita has been difficult to deal with. She was such a great character, and really helped to balance the character of Dexter. Seeing this trailer has made a major push towards me continuing to watch.

It seems like the series will be taken in exactly the direction it needs to. Dexter becomes a suspect in Rita’s murder. The lies he piled up in season 4 start to crumble, and he seems to start to spiral out of control. All the while trying to care for the kids. We’ll see if he has to care for all three of them or just his baby [...]

SDCC 2010: Sony Panel Shows Off ‘Priest,’ ‘The Other Guys’ & ‘Green Hornet’

The Movie God   |

Sony was present at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, and though they didn’t show off anything exciting from their reboot of Spider-Man, they did bring plenty of goodies to present for Priest, The Good Guys, and The Green Hornet.

They began with the new adaptation of Tokyo Pop graphic novel, Priest. The movie stars Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Stephen Moyer, Karl Urban, and Maggie Q, who were all in attendance. The movie tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world that’s been devastated by centuries of war between humans and vampires. A priest (Bettany), who fought in the last big war, comes out of hiding to track down some vampires who kidnapped his niece.

The panel opened with a teaser trailer (which you can actually see below…though I’m not sure for how long). After that they go into some questions for the group. Basically just questions about what drew them to the film and and Bettany re-teaming with director Scott Stewart (Legion) and such.

Be sure to click over and check out the teaser while it still works! [...]

SDCC 2010: ‘Chuck’ Panel Reveals Actress Who’ll Play Chuck’s Mom

Henchman21   |

Big news for fans of NBC’s Chuck came on Saturday at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con as the actress set to play Chuck’s mom in season 4 was revealed, and it’s none other than Linda Hamilton (The Terminator). In a show that has prided itself on having a lot of popular guest stars may have topped itself with this casting. Creators Chris Fedak and Josh Schwartz spoke about the upcoming season and how the main plot running through the season will be Chuck’s (Zachary Levi) search for his mother.

If you ever get a chance to come to SDCC, I highly recommend checking out the Chuck panel, as it’s always a good time. This year’s panel opened with the Hamilton announcement and then cut into a performance by series band Jeffster dancing to Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance“. Then the cast was introduced and discussed the upcoming season as well as their yearly “Thank You” to the fans. If you’re a fan of the show, you always feel very appreciated after seeing one of their panels, and you can tell that this is a show with a very passionate fan base [...]

SDCC 2010: Marvel Shows Off New ‘Thor’ Footage

Tom Cheredar   |

Marvel Studios gave fans at 2010 San Diego Comic-Con the very first look at their upcoming 3D feature film Thor, which isn’t due in theaters until 2011.

The panel included Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Kat Dennings, and director Kenneth Branagh, as well as producer Kevin Feige.

One valuable piece of information about the film was disclosed by director Branagh concerning Thor’s mortal life.

“We have some Don Blake surprises in this movie. So do not assume that he is not included,” Branagh revealed.

As far as the video they screened, I was ultimately satisfied. The 3D elements didn’t overpower the overall visuals and instead (at least from what I saw) added texture and a bit of depth to a few scenes. See the full description of the footage here below.

I’ll admit I was worried the movie was far too plastic and bright judging from the screen shots they provided in the week prior to SDCC. But I am happy to say that from the footage screened to the audience, I am fairly confident they could actually pull this off [...]

SDCC 2010: First Glimpse Of ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’

Tom Cheredar   |

Fans saw their first glimpse of Captain America: The First Avenger at Marvel Studios panel today at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con.

The teaser trailer opened with lots of red, white, and blue imagery over top old World War II footage of soldiers marching in line and iconic imagery, like Hilter walking in Paris and U.S. soldiers rising the flag at Iwo Jima. The old video footage plays as FDR’s famous “Infamy Speech” is in voiceover.

When the black and white footage ends, we see the Captain America shield symbol, and then Captain America for the first time in a baggy unflattering suit, and finally the shield which is hurdled at the camera to end the clip.

The first glimpse of Captain America’s suit looked much like the prototype sketches that previously leaked online. The “mask” is more akin to something out of the Ultimates version rather than the classic suit that features tiny wings on the head [...]

SDCC 2010: Kevin Feige Responds To Hulk Recasting Decision (Sort Of)

Tom Cheredar   |

At the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con today, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, off-handedly responded to a fan question about the decision to recast the role of Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the upcoming Avengers film rather than asking Edward Norton to reprise the role from The Incredible Hulk.

“He’s not here today,” Feige said in response to the question during the Marvel Studios panel, which was simply “Ed Norton?”. He then basically took a page out of Norton’s classy statement explaining why he wasn’t attached to the project and declared that the panel wasn’t quite over (perhaps eluding to the Avengers announcement that came later on).

The crowd’s reaction, a mix of silence and booing across the room, seemed less than satisfied. This was also the case during the Avengers cast announcement when Avengers co-star and Comic-Con favorite Robert Downey Jr. introduced Mark Ruffalo, who then was brought on stage [...]

SDCC 2010: Details On The Stabbing At Hall H

Empress Eve   |

The Geeks of Doom crew has been at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con since its preview night on Wednesday, and Dave3 and I have been in the San Diego Convention Center’s main auditorium, Hall H, all day, every day since Thursday morning.

At around 5pm today just before Universal’s panel for Paul and Cowboys & Aliens was about to begin, a fight broke out hall, which was packed to capacity (over 6,000 seats). A young man was taken out on a stretcher, while his alleged attacker was carted off in handcuffs by police.

Dave and I, along with fellow Doomers Tom Cheredar and Andrew Sorcini, were sitting about 10 rows back and to the side from where the fight occurred and witnessed a lot of what happened. Typically, I wouldn’t have bothered to write about a ‘fight’ at the convention, but in the past few hours since the incident occurred, I’ve seen reports from the likes of the LA Times that are quite skewed and wanted to give a better account of what happened.

My main problem with these mainstream reports are that they make it seem like attendees all just stood around gawking and taking cell phone pictures while a man laid injured. This is NOT what happened.

Here’s what did happen, from what several of us witnessed [we were also sitting with our friends John and Matt, as well as the guys from SlashFilm and The Totally Rad Show, so we all talked about what we saw happen]. [...]

SDCC 2010: Video: ‘Avengers’ Cast Debuts On Stage, Plus Teaser Clip Description

Tom Cheredar   |

In a surprise move, the cast of Avengers made their debut in person at the end of Marvel Studios film panel in Hall H at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con.

A teaser clip was shown, consisting of Colonial Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) speaking about a super team while the Avengers logo slowly takes form.

The crowd went wild as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige welcomed Jackson on stage to introduce the first half of the Avengers cast that had already been announced: Clark Gregg (S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America) and Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), the latter of whom took over the mic [...]

SDCC 2010: ‘Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark’ Panel With Guillermo del Toro

The Movie God   |

A lot of movies have been showing off footage at Comic Con 2010 that have received high praise, and Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is no different. The movie, which is written by Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins and directed by Troy Nixey, made an appearance at this year’s convention and proceeded to blow some faces off.

This panel was really just all about the footage shown, and we’ll do our best to describe it to you in-full below. For those who don’t know, the movie is a remake of the 1973 movie of the same name. In the movie, a girl (Bailee Madison) goes to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes). The thing about the house that she goes to live in is that it houses some evil creatures who reside in a pit of ash, and they want the girl to join them.

The first thing shown was a brief teaser trailer for the movie, which is what we’ll likely see first whenever they decide to release it. The teaser opens with some spooky voiceover that says “You’re sitting there in the dark, but don’t worry…there’s nothing to be afraid of.” [...]

SDCC 2010: ‘Green Lantern’ Details & Footage Description

Tom Cheredar   |

The cast and crew of the Green Lantern movie was on hand at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the upcoming film, due out in 2011. Also, the very first footage from the film was show (see description of it here below).

Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics Geoff Johns, decked out in Green Lantern gear, was introduced first to get things rolling and said the week he spent on set was the best experience of his life. Considering Johns’ history working with legendary director Richard Donner, that’s saying a lot.

“When I first worked for Richard Donner, we talked about making Green Lantern and one of the producers said ‘Can we do the movie without the ring?’ and right there I thought: “There’s never going to be a Green Lantern movie,” said Johns, who added that it’s been incredible to see what director Martin Campbell and crew have done.

The costume itself wasn’t shown, which Campbell described as being lines of musculature. “A lot of thought has been given to it and it is a work of progress,” Campbell said [...]

SDCC 2010: New Footage Description For ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’

Empress Eve   |

It’s the last day of the big-movie panel Hall H programming here at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, and starting it off was the Warner Bros panel, which included Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

It was a quick presentation, with Tom Feldon, who plays Draco Malfoy in the film franchise, being the sole representative for the upcoming two-part film finale.

The 22-year-old Feldon, who was 12 when he started on the first Harry Potter film, made his first appearance at San Diego Comic-Con and was very pleased to be before the crowd, which were very welcoming of him.

Feldon’s main objective for the panel was to introduce new footage from Deathly Hallows. Check out the description of the footage here below [...]

SDCC 2010: Tour Of Flynn’s Arcade ‘ComiTRON’ Event

Tom Cheredar   |

Disney has revamped their off site “Flynn’s Arcade” event to promote their upcoming feature TRON: Legacy. The only way to get in is to download the Free TRON iPhone app and check in at the booth set up inside San Diego Comic-Con‘s exhibitor floor.

But fortunately for anyone not at Comic-Con, we got in and captured a bunch of pictures (and video coming soon) of the ComiTRON event — check them out here below.

The app offers an all-new version of the classic Tanks game from the Tron Arcade, the TRON: Legacy trailer, pre-sale order information for the TRON Evolution video game and will update with additional video, music, and games [...]

SDCC 2010: 38 Studios Announces ‘Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning’

Henchman21   |

On Thursday at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con the first game from Curt Schilling‘s 38 Studios was announced — a fantasy RPG titled Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning.

Schilling, a former MLB pitcher and self described hard core gamer (who apparently had specific internet connection for hotel rooms written into his later contracts) is the heart and soul behind the project, but he has assembled an A-list of talent to create his first game. Writing the story for the game is New York Times best selling author R.A. Salvatore, who is well known in fantasy circles for writing some of the most successful novels based on the Dungeons and Dragons brand. Providing a lot of the art for the game, as well as supervising all the other art is comic creator Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn. And the lead designer for the game is Ken Rolston, who was the lead designer on two modern classic RPG’s: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind as well as its sequel The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion [...]

SDCC 2010: AMC’s ‘Walking Dead’ Impresses

Henchman21   |

We here at Geeks of Doom are all pretty big fans of Robert Kirkman’s comic series The Walking Dead from Image Comics, and needless to say we’ve all been looking forward to the upcoming series that will air on AMC, premiering in October during their Horrorfest line of movies.

Friday’s Walking Dead panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con brought with it our first look at the series, and let me say that it is looking spectacular. The series, masterminded by writer/director Frank Darabont (The Green Mile, The Mist, and a little movie called The Shawshank Redemption) and produced by Gale Anne Hurd (The Terminator, Aliens), follows Frank Grimes as he wakes up from a gun shot wound to find that he’s slept through the zombie apocalypse and must find his wife and son. Kirkman, Darabont, and Hurd were all on hand to give some details about the show [...]

SDCC 2010: ‘Skyline’ Panel

The Geeks of Doom   |

What drew me to the Skyline panel today at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con was curiosity out of the sheer lack of information about this film beforehand. Press had been notoriously tight-lipped on it up until now, which may have been an (effective, in my case) hype-building tactic.

The rough gist of the film is it’s an attempt to create a large-scale alien invasion film on a completely independent budget. From the footage I saw, which included many generic shots of glowing lights descending upon the oft-abused Los Angeles, the execution is similar to Cloverfield or the upcoming Battle: Los Angeles (which the Strouse Brothers’ FX house Hydraulx is also producing effects for) [...]

Brad Pitt Officially Attached To Star In Marc Forster’s ‘World War Z’

The Movie God   |

Back in 2008, a film adaptation of the zombie survival novel World War Z was quickly gaining steam. J. Michael Straczynski was writing the script and Marc Forster was brought on to direct with hopes of a release some time in 2010, which clearly has not worked out so well. The movie was also moving under Brad Pitt‘s Plan B Entertainment, and many rumors had Pitt set to star in the adaptation as well.

Now comes word out of the Comic Con scene that the movie is still very much happening, and Pitt has gone from rumored star to officially attached to star. MTV was able to talk to the novel’s author and son of Mel Brooks, Max Brooks, who received a call sharing the good news with him.

The movie will take place a decade after a zombie infestation has occurred, and the story is told from the perspective of survivors of the event. [...]

CONFIRMED: Mark Ruffalo To Replace Edward Norton As The Hulk In ‘The Avengers’

The Movie God   |

Earlier this month news broke that Collateral and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind star Mark Ruffalo was in deep talks to take on the role of the Incredible Hulk in Marvel Studios’ The Avengers. According to Deadline, this is now etched-in-stone confirmed.

The reports indicate that Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Marvel have reached an official deal and that Ruffalo is signed and sealed. This would set up a potentially exciting reveal tomorrow during the Marvel panel when the entire cast of The Avengers is expected to appear together.

For those who aren’t aware, Edward Norton played the pre-Hulk Bruce Banner character in The Incredible Hulk, and many wanted him to return to the role again. Marvel, being aware of Norton’s reputation as sometimes being difficult to work with, decided to go in another direction and bring someone new in. This didn’t sit well with fans, but as a business it was a decision that had to be made. Norton is an immense talent, but he does have a history, so they either jumped in blindly with him and hoped for the best or cast a new name a la Don Cheadle to Terrence Howard in Iron Man 2. [...]
