Free Read: ‘Inception’ Digital Comic Book Prequel

Vactor   |

Inception is one of the most anticipated films of the year and Warner Bros. knows this. They’ve been pretty spectacular with their marketing campaign for the film so far, culminating in a new online 19-page comic book prequel entitled, Inception: The Cobol Job which can be found over at Yahoo Movies.

The Cobol Job is the story that leads to the opening of the film. If you read the comic on Yahoo there’s a pretty cool reader that mimics the ComiXology reader, going panel by panel. There’s also an option to download it as a PDF to read offline.

The story is written by Jordan Goldberg with art by Long Vo, Joe Ng, and Crystal Reid [...]

See A Movie Like You’ve Never Seen One Before; Rolling Roadshow Schedule Unveiled

The Movie God   |

One of the coolest movie events that you could take part in over the past handful of years is called the Rolling Roadshow. Netflix sponsored the event once upon a time, and now the famed Alamo Drafthouse has teamed up with Levi’s to bring you the 2010 tour. You can see the newly unveiled schedule below!

The tour basically gives you the opportunity to go an see a movie at the place it was filmed or somewhere that relates greatly to the film. For example, previous shows have included Jaws being screened on the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard where it was filmed, and Clerks in Red Bank, NJ near the Quick Stop the movie took place in.

This year’s lineup has some very cool shows to check out…if you live nearby anyway. The one depressing thing about this is that it’s all over the country and you probably won’t get to see them all. Head on over to the other side to see the schedule now! [...]

Brian Cox Is The Latest Name To Join ‘Rise Of The Apes’

The Movie God   |

Well gosh darn it — you want to think a movie is going to be terrible when you hear that said movie will be a Planet of the Apes prequel and that it will use CGI effects instead of the better-known costume and prosthetic effects. But despite all of the alarms going off in our heads about this project, every new casting announcement that comes along seems to add another level of intrigue.

It’s now being reported by The Wrap that the great Brian Cox will be joining the cast of Rise of the Apes, the 20th Century Fox prequel that will take place long before the events seen in Planet of the Apes. Cox will be playing a role he can play to absolute perfection: the villain. He would be playing the owner of a multitude of primates used for testing in a lab that he tends to treat very poorly. This spells bad things for Mr. Cox. [...]

Spoiler Talk: Predators

Empress Eve   |

This weekend saw the release of Predators, which is the second Predator sequel (not counting the two Alien vs. Predator movies), and comes 23 years after the release of the first Predator film, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Predators producer Robert Rodriguez (who also wrote early drafts of the screenplay) has stated that the new movie is a straight sequel to Predator, with no regard to the second film, 1990′s Predator 2 starring Danny Glover (and like GoD staffer Vactor always asks, in what universe is Danny Clover an action hero?).

I loved the first Predator movie in all its 80s action-movie glory, and thankfully Predators does a fine job at bringing the Predator mythos to modern-day audiences.

Predators has several nods to its predecessor, but goes beyond being just ‘more of the same.’ The film sees a group of humans dropped one by one into a jungle area. None of them have any knowledge of how they got there or why they were brought there. Most of them are armed and understandable suspicious of one another. As they search the area for clues to unravel the mystery of their circumstance, they realize that they’re actually on some kind of game preserve — the problem is, they’re the game! Hunting them are the Predators, an alien race of creatures who live for the hunt and make trophies of their kill. Now, the humans have to figure out a way to not only survive, but to escape!

If you’ve seen Predators, then it’s time for some SPOILER TALK. Continue reading for my SPOILER-filled thoughts on the movie, and feel free to leave your thoughts in the Comments section [...]

Norton Responds To Hulk/Avengers Ousting

Vactor   |

It sure has been fun following the word sparring between Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Edward Norton’s agent, Brian Swardstrom, hasn’t it? Feige announced this week that Norton would not be returning as Bruce Banner/The Hulk in future Marvel films, namely The Avengers, which prompted a defensive response from the actor’s agent.

Well hang on tight kids because there’s more fun to be had with this one!

In typical 2010 fashion, the man himself, Edward Norton, has now released an official statement to us via his official Facebook page! Check out the full statement here below.

His statement seems too politically correct for my tastes. I want to hear what Norton’s ACTUALLY thinking without having to worry about ruffling any feathers! [...]

Yelchin Out For Peter Parker, Possibly In For Harry Osborn?

Vactor   |

Those good ole boys over at /Film are reporting an interesting casting rumor regarding Mark Webb’s upcoming Spider-Man reboot. Anton Yelchin could be the next actor to portray Harry Osborn.

If you recall, Yelchin was one of those actors rumored to be in the running for Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the film. As we found out, the role eventually went to Andrew Garfield, but if the rumor is correct, Yelchin could still be a part of the production.

I was originally OK with him being Peter Parker, but this new rumor seems a bit more interesting to me. Previously, Osborn was portrayed by one of my current favorite actors, James Franco, but I never really felt like that casting choice totally clicked. Yelchin has impressed me in pretty much every role I’ve seen him in and I would have total confidence in him if this rumor turned out to be true [...]

‘Tosh.0′ Passes John Stewart’s ‘Daily Show’ As Top Comedy Central Studio Show

The Movie God   |

The return of Futurama recently broke some records for Comedy Central pulling in 2.9 million viewers on its first night back (which has now apparently dropped to 2 million — what’s everyone doing, keep watching!). And now the network has another relatively new show taking over the top spot of their studio recorded programs.

Tosh.0 is a simple show mainly consisting of video clips found on the internet, a funny bit here and there, and a weekly “Web Redemption” for some viral video superstar to clear their name. But sometimes simple is best, with numbers showing a new high of 2.4 million viewers for this past Wednesday’s episode. This propels Tosh.0 by not only Stephen Colbert’s The Colbert Report, but even John Stewart and The Daily Show making it the new highest-rated studio show on Comedy Central and placing it third overall behind Futurama and South Park.

The hilarious (and sometimes disgustingly unwatchable) web videos are a big reason for the success of Tosh.0, but it’s host Daniel Tosh himself who has to be a primary reason as well. [...]

Comic Creator Harvey Pekar Has Died

Merkader   |

Harvey Pekar, creator of the indie comic American Splendor, has died. He was 70 years old.

WTAM100, newsradio in Cleveland, Pekar’s hometown, is reporting that the comic creator was found dead by his wife Joyce Brabner at 1AM on Monday July 12. This report was confirmed by the county coroner’s office, according to the report.

The cause of death is not yet known at this time, however, his health problems have been well documented in writer’s comic books. These health issues included prostate cancer, asthma, high blood pressure, and depression. American Splendor was such an original interesting book, based solely on his life leaving little of his personal life out [...]

‘Blackstar Warrior’ Documentary Seeks To Uncover Black ‘Star Wars’ Film

seaberry   |

Recently, a documentary was released to YouTube in three parts about what was a proposed movie called Blackstar Warrior, an all-black take on the Star Wars Universe that features what would have been the first appearance of the Lando Calrissian character.

The documentary uncovers the sad tale of Frederic Jackson, Sr., an African-American businessman who attempted to self-finance Blackstar Warrior. The documentary also has interviews with Jackson’s son and reveals the obstacles and trials that prevented Blackstar Warrior from ever being completed.

You can watch all three parts of the documentary here below, the third part of which has what is being touted as actual footage from Blackstar Warrior. There’s been some talk that this documentary is a parody or a hoax, but Geeks of Doom had a chance to speak with Matt Haley, a comic book artist involved with this documentary, who helped clear up the situation for us. Check out our interview with Haley here below [...]

Marvel Confirms New Hulk In ‘The Avengers’; Edward Norton’s Agent Responds

The Movie God   |

A few days back news broke that Marvel Studios had possibly made a choice not to bring The Incredible Hulk star Edward Norton back to play Bruce Banner in The Avengers. Instead, the studio decided that it would be in their better interest to go out and find an unknown actor to take on the part — a decision that most seemed to think was not the right one.

HitFix, who first broke news of Marvel’s plans, now finds themselves at the epicenter of this story’s progression as a confirmation of Norton’s omission and replacement has been given, and a response fired right back.

Marvel head Kevin Feige was the one to offer up the confirmation explaining that it was not a money thing as everyone had assumed, but a creativity and collaborative issue…clearly a knock on Norton’s reputation. The actor is known for being vocal on the set when he doesn’t agree with the direction and can sometimes be hard to work with. It could be said that this is unprofessional and not worth dealing with, but the actor’s tendencies could also simply account for his passion for a project. [...]

DVD Review: From Paris With Love

Three-D   |

From Paris with Love
DVD | Blu-ray
Directed by Pierre Morel
Starring John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys Meyers
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release Date: June 8, 2010

The ruin of From Paris With Love is caused by nothing other than its having relied on mindless and exaggerated action for the entire film. The title alone suggestions an early James Bond film with the same characteristics of mindlessness. Take out the action and what is left is a thing (can’t even call it a movie) of empty sounds. Director Pierre Morel, from a script by Adi Hasak, shows his incompetency in his inability to construct a cohesive film. His attention to the film’s plot is neglected, simply gathering ideas from numerous of other action films and employing them within his. Rather, he finds attention in the film’s many action sequences, all used up to the point of exhaustion. Finding any semblance of probability in the film can be a forlorn task because there isn’t any. What surprisingly drives the film, though, from start to finish is its unmatched reliance on the action scenes, all in which, paradoxically, keep the movie from succeeding and failing at the same time.

There is an extreme inefficiency in the film’s competence to construct the lowest plausibility factor available. It is a violent impetuosity of bombardment that guiltily works us over with time. But within that time frame we know soon enough that we are watching a film of ultimate futility, making sense of nothing and having no second thoughts about its inability to construct something that has the smallest grain of resonance. There are times where it unconsciously implies disdain rather than the coolness and heroism it is aiming for. Still, Morel’s passion for extreme action keeps the movie moving at a well paced time, never stepping outside of his continuous harmony [...]

Comic Review: X-Men #1

The Geeks of Doom   |

X-Men #1
Written by: Victor Gischler
Art by: Paco Medina
Cover by: Adi Granov
Marvel Comics
Price $3.99
Release Date: July 9, 2010

Well the first issue of a brand new X-Men title is here, the title of this new series is just being called X-Men and it is going to be replacing X-Force as a primary X-Men title. It still has the X-Men based out of their base on Utopia, but they are more involved in San Francisco.

This new series is penned by Victor Gischler and drawn by Paco Medina. The artwork in this issue done by Medina reminds me a lot of the artwork done in Uncanny X-Men and in X-Men: Legacy.

My main problem with this issue, the first in the “Curse of the Mutants” story arc, is the story done by Gischlerm which involves the X-Men learning about a new threat to San Francisco, vampires. The book opens with Pixie and former X-Man Jubilee in a café in Union Square where a mysterious man takes his shirt off and begins to smoke and then proceeds to explode covering 24 people with blood, including Jubilee. So it becomes the mission of the X-Men to find out why this event happened [...]

Has Marvel Decided To Replace Edward Norton’s Hulk With An Unknown In ‘The Avengers’?

The Movie God   |

If reports coming out of the HitFix camp are accurate, then yes it’s true: Marvel Studios has decided not to use Edward Norton as the Hulk in their blockbuster to end all other blockbusters, The Avengers. It also sounds like it’s in Marvel’s strategy guide to replace the veteran actor will a complete unknown for the part.

For as long as the movie has been on the way, the wild card has been Norton. The actor played Bruce Banner, the man with a colossal green inner-self, in 2008′s The Incredible Hulk, and it was widely thought that he and the movie were a redeeming effort for Ang Lee’s 2003 strikeout, Hulk.

At first we didn’t even know if Hulk would be included in the lineup for The Avengers, but this past January Marvel chief Kevin Feige confirmed that the big fella would indeed be a part of the fun. After that, most seemed to feel that the best answer was to find a way to get Norton — one of the few actors that they did not have locked up for multiple pictures — back once again. [...]

Still Want To Be A Doctor? James Cameron Pockets $350 Million For ‘Avatar’

The Movie God   |

This news is so very incomprehensible, you might just find yourself staring at the numbers for an hour or two before coming out of a shock-induced coma.

It’s no secret that Avatar was the biggest movie that this or any other world has ever seen (maybe…I hear Omicron Persei 8 is remaking Bikini Party Summer). With a budget somewhere in the $250 million to $300 million budget, the risk was unheard of and failure would have been of cataclysmic proportions. But we should all know by now that James Cameron knows best, and he’s about to have a very good day because of it.

Avatar went on to destroy the box office and all records in its path. Before we knew it, the only significant record left was Cameron’s other dominant force, Titanic, and its untouchable $600 million domestic gross bar-setter. Avatar not only touched that record but assaulted it, now sitting $150 million past previous record…and with a special theatrical re-release still to come in August, no less. [...]

Second Teaser Trailer For Facebook Movie ‘The Social Network’ Released

The Movie God   |

No one knows how good David Fincher‘s movie about the creation and evolution of one of the world’s most popular websites, Facebook. But with the release of a second teaser trailer today, one this is for sure: they sure know how to promote The Social Network.

The movie, based on Ben Mizrich‘s book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal, tells the story of Facebook founders Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin and how their vision turned into a social networking phenomenon, as well as all of the drama that came with it. The movie stars Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg and newly-crowned Spider-Man Andrew Garfield as Saverin.

Continue on over to the other side to check out the second teaser trailer for The Social Network now!

Much like the first teaser trailer, this one is also very simple-yet-effective. It’s basically just a conversation between those involved in the Facebook explosion, but it really sets a cool tone for the movie. [...]

‘X-Men: First Class’ Cast Update; Kevin Bacon To Play Villain?

The Movie God   |

The cast for Matthew Vaughn‘s adaptation of the comic book series X-Men: First Class has been moving at a furious pace lately, with new announcements and rumors popping up left and right.

Things began with a couple of big bangs with the announcements that James McAvoy would be playing a young Professor Xavier and Michael Fassbender would be playing a young Magneto.

After that, casting moved on to the actors who would be taking on youthful versions of many popular X-Men characters. We first heard that Benjamin Walker would be playing Beast in the movie, but that has since changed when he decided it would be better to stick with playing Andrew Jackson on Broadway. Interesting choice, no doubt. It has since been revealed that Nicholas Hoult would be taking his place in the role. Hoult has appeared in movies like About a Boy, Clash of the Titans, and the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road. [...]

Drumroll Please: The Title For ‘Saw 7′ Will Rival ’5nal Destination’

The Movie God   |

There was once a time when you might have thought that the two top current rival horror franchises were Saw and Final Destination. After a decade or so the deadly duo are still going head-to-head, only now it’s to determine who can come up with the absolute worst possible title for their latest installments. And as you can plainly see for yourself, both are making a valiant effort in obtaining the crown.

At the end of June, it was revealed that the title for the new Final Destination would actually be 5nal Destination. So what could the title of the latest chapter in Jigsaw killer saga be? It could and apparently will be Saw 3D: The Traps Come Alive. Even better — this news from Shock Till You Drop has been confirmed by Lionsgate themselves.

The seventh Saw is supposedly going to be the last, and it returns Carey Elwes’ Dr. Gordon character into the mix. It also stars Sean Patrick Flanery and Tobin Bell, of course. [...]
