Back in March we found out that Tim Burton would be part of a new stop-motion movie based on Charles Addams‘ classic work, The Addams Family, which ran in The New Yorker before becoming a TV series and pair of film adaptations.
According to Deadline (who first broke the original news), Burton is still attached to produce the movie for Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures, and that he’s reaching out to some old friends for help. It’s been revealed that his Ed Wood screenwriters, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, have been hired to write the Addams Family script.
It was also added that Burton would be producing another project of the writing duo’s called Big Eyes, which is based on artist Margaret Keane’s works featuring large-eyed children, which were very popular in the ’60s, and her struggle to gain credit for the artwork. This is a movie that Karaszewski and Alexander have set up with hopes of directing themselves.
Karaszewski had this to say about the two projects:
Both of these projects are based on artwork that Tim absolutely loves. The retrospective in New York of Tim’s own artwork showed how much of an influence Charles Addams was to him. We want the tone to be as darkly funny and subversive as the Addams drawings, and we’ve come up with an approach that nobody has ever done before.
Along with Ed Wood, Karaszewski and Alexander have previously written Problem Child (Junior!), The People vs. Larry Flint, and 1408.
