A sequel to Louis Leterrier‘s epic blockbuster remake, Clash of the Titans, was announced almost immediately after the first movie was released on April 2, 2010. Clash went on to make over $491 million in worldwide box office, bringing back well over its $125 million price tag and, despite what you thought of the movie itself, leaving the decision whether to actually go through with Clash of the Titans 2 or not was pretty crystal clear.

As for who would direct the sequel, it was unclear at first whether Leterrier would return or if he’d be replaced. Now we know that he’s officially out and that South African director Jonathan Liebesman will be stepping in to take his place. No word on if Leterrier just decided to move on to other things or if it was the studios choice to try someone new.

Liebsman doesn’t have many credits on his resume yet, but his new movie Battle: Los Angeles was one of the many that made a splash at the recent San Diego Comic Con. In addition to that, he helmed horror titles Darkness Falls and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.

One of the big issues people had with the first movie was that they decided to convert it to 3D after it was shot and even after Leterrier said it wouldn’t be in 3D. It appears that this time, the plan is to film in 3D from the start, which would already be a very smart move.

A treatment on the script was first put together by Greg Berlanti (Green Lantern), Dan Mazeau (The Flash), and David Leslie Johnson (Red Riding Hood), and Mazeau and Johnson are currently writing the script from that treatment.

Stars Sam Worthington and Gemma Arterton are expected to return.
