Tim Burton To Reunite With ‘Ed Wood’ Writers For ‘The Addams Family’

Back in March we found out that Tim Burton would be part of a new stop-motion movie based on Charles Addams‘ classic work, The Addams Family, which ran in The New Yorker before becoming a TV series and pair of film adaptations.
According to Deadline (who first broke the original news), Burton is still attached to produce the movie for Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures, and that he’s reaching out to some old friends for help. It’s been revealed that his Ed Wood screenwriters, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, have been hired to write the Addams Family script.
It was also added that Burton would be producing another project of the writing duo’s called Big Eyes, which is based on artist Margaret Keane’s works featuring large-eyed children, which were very popular in the ’60s, and her struggle to gain credit for the artwork. This is a movie that Karaszewski and Alexander have set up with hopes of directing themselves. [...]

Comic Review: Boondock Saints: In Nomine Patris
 |

Boondock Saints: In Nomine Patris 1 & 2
Written by Troy Duffy & JB Love
Art by Guus Floor
Cover by Chris Brunner
12-Gauge/Innfusion
Price: $3.99 each
Release Date: May 26 & July 14, 2010
The second in the new line of Boondock Saints comics, In Nomine Patris, is the beginning of the secret history of Il Duce. This to me is a great way to kick off a serious stint in the comic line for the saints. It introduces all the characters and a lot about the history of their “business” without prior knowledge needed. This series does a great job in treating it like every issue can be someone’s first issue.
Basically in both issues we learn how Il Duce becomes a vigilante and why he kept it up throughout his entire life. We also learn how he got his vest and we learn it all through Connor and Murphy’s eyes. The story is great and very interesting. I really enjoyed reading it. There are a few storytelling issues here and there, but it is more of a layout issue than a script issue. It is very hard to tell where we are in the story because of the jumps between past, present, and future. Something that would help is different times of day for each setting so there would be a more distinct coloring for each one. But that is just a minor issue which is great for Troy Duffy‘s second and third comic [...]

Seth Rogen To Voice Ghost In New DreamWorks Animated Flick ‘Boo U.’

Seth Rogen is no stranger to voice roles in animated movies and TV shows. The typically comedic actor’s distinct vocal talents can be heard in movies like Monsters vs. Aliens, Horton Hears A Who!, Kung Fu Panda, Shrek the Third, The Spiderwick Chronicles, and TV shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and American Dad.
A couple of his previous works are through DreamWorks Animation, and the studio seems to have a thing for Rogen. It’s been announced that the actor will now be voicing the lead role in an upcoming DreamWorks production, Boo U.
Rogen will play a ghost who isn’t very good at being spooky, and as is such, he must return to Boo University (it’s assumed; maybe Boo U. is just a nickname and not the literal name), a school to help and train ghosts to be the best spooks they can be.
Boo U. will be directed by Tony Leondis, whose only other computer animated directorial effort was 2008′s Igor. [...]

Comic Review: Madam Samurai, Vol. 1
 |
Posted by seaberry | August 19th, 2010 at 2:25 pm |

Madam Samurai, Vol. 1
Written by Gary Young
Art & Cover by David Hitchcock
Edited by Shane Chebsey
Scar Comics
Price: $12.99
Release Date: June 11, 2010
Madam Samurai is the interesting story of an unnamed, mute girl who learns the ways of the samurai from a ronin, or masterless samurai. The story begins in Victorian-era London, but then jumps back to 19thcentury Japan, where we see a young boy named Kazuo watch his mother commit a ritualistic suicide to honor the memory of her dead husband. Kazuo is taken in by another samurai and quickly becomes rivals with his biological son, Toshiro. Their sibling rivalry sets in motion the events that lead to the birth of Madam Samurai.
The writing in Madam Samurai is very captivating and cinematic. Gary Young‘s screenwriting background was very beneficial to the pacing of the story. Despite several flashbacks, the story does not get bogged down or obstructed by this device. In fact, every scene in the story was essential, which is a testament to the editing work of Shane Chebsey. The young Madam Samurai is an interesting protagonist, and we are able to watch her transformation from mute peasant girl to samurai’s pupil to would-be defender of the less fortunate in old London [...]

Geeks of Doom Interviews: Brian Clevinger
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | August 19th, 2010 at 9:58 am |

Brian Clevenger may be one of our favorite writers here at Geeks of Doom. If you’re not reading his series, Atomic Robo, you really need to check it out, as it’s one of the best series out there today.
Now, he has parlayed his success with that book into a gig writing a reimagining of the classic Infinity Gauntlet storyline.
Brian sat down to answer some questions about his new job, about Robo’s origins, and also about his webcomics.
Henchman 21: First I just want to say thanks for doing this. I think there are a lot of fans of Atomic Robo who visit our site, and I think they should get a kick out of it. I know a lot of our staff, myself included are big fans of the series.
My first question is about the recently announced Avengers and the Infinity Gauntlet. What can you tell us about the project and how did you get involved with it? [...]

Want To Own Your Own Video Game Store? $30,000 Is All It Takes
Quite the interesting new item is up for bidding on eBay, and the winner will find themselves the proud new owner of an entire video game store!
The store, located in Grand Junction, Colorado, is currently still active and the owners have decided to part ways with it. If you win the auction, you can either continue running the store from Colorado, OR you can have the entire inventory shipped to your location, were you can add it to your own inventory or start your own new game store. Shipping seems fair; if you pay the asking price or more the first 750 miles are free and $1 each additional mile.
Included in the inventory is games from all platforms, including Nintendo, SEGA, Super NES, PlayStation, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Wii and many others. There’s also game systems, accessories, displays and signs and shelving and every bit of what comes with a game store. And the most intriguing part of all of this? There’s a Buy it Now option for $30,000, which, if you have it, isn’t bad at all for what you get. According to the seller there’s $60,000 worth of inventory included. [...]

UPDATED! ‘Mad Men’ Star January Jones Replaces Alice Eve As Emma Frost In ‘X-Men: First Class’
For a long while, She’s Out of My League star Alice Eve was expected to play Emma Frost in the movie adaptation of comic book series X-Men: First Class. As it turns out, that deal was never sealed with ink and now comes word that a new actress will be taking on the role.
Deadline reports that Mad Men beauty January Jones will instead be taking on the part of the White Queen in director Matthew Vaughn‘s movie. The two-time Golden Globe nominated actress has also appeared in movies like American Wedding, We Are Marshall, and Pirate Radio.
Some other smaller castings for the movie have also been revealed as well. The most notable of these is Zoe Kravitz, who is set to play a younger Angel. This is odd because Angel has always been a male character, played in X-Men: The Last Stand by Ben Foster.
Rounding out the smaller casting, Bill Milner has been brought on to play an even younger version of the young Magneto that Michael Fassbender will play for the majority of the film; and Morgan Lilly will play a young version of Raven. [...]

Ramona Flowers and 5 Other Manic Pixie Dream Girls Who Aren’t
When I first picked up Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim series, I fell for it, hard. Here, finally, was a quirky, beautiful love interest who wasn’t just another Manic Pixie Dream Girl — a three-dimensional girl with motivations and an inner life of her own. (It doesn’t sound like that should be too much to ask, but the sad case is that it often is.) I found O’Malley’s take on the archetype to be just about perfect.
Then Edgar Wright‘s film adaptation came out, and it was hilarious, and inventive, and energetic, and sweet, and… and yet another story about a Hapless Hero and a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Although the film remained mostly faithful to the main plot of the source material, it had to cut copious amounts of backstory to fit into the running time. Perhaps no one suffered more than Ramona Flowers, who went from a fascinating, complex woman to a pretty trophy to be won.
What was most disappointing about it is that the downgrade felt unnecessary. Manic Pixie Dream Girls abound, but there’s always an opportunity for them to be more than that. Below, in honor of O’Malley’s original Ramona Flowers, are five other Manic Pixie Dream Girls who aren’t [...]

A Spartan Will Rise In This New ‘Halo: Reach’ Trailer
 |
Posted by Merkader | August 17th, 2010 at 7:43 pm |
Halo: Reach is a little less than a month away, and I couldn’t be more excited. It is looking like developer Bungie is really going to go out with a bang with their last Halo game.
Released today is a new trailer entitled ‘A Spartan Will Rise.” In the trailer you meet all six members of Team Noble, the group of Spartans from the game.
Good concept for a trailer that gets you better acquainted with the cast, but what is up with the voice over? Very Lord of the Rings which I excused when it was used for Gears of War 2 a few years ago, but come on! You have to be able to come up with a different voice over than an elfish sounding lady. Anyway, elf rip off aside, it’s a decent trailer and only goes to help build excitement for the new Halo game.
You can see the new trailer below now!
Halo: Reach will be release on September 14th on Xbox 360. [...]

End Of The ‘Star Wars: Legacy’ Era
Well Star Wars fans, the end of an era is upon us. One of the most successful Star Wars comic book titles is coming to a bittersweet end. Star Wars: Legacy #50, which goes on sale tomorrow, is the grand finale of a story that brought readers epic battles and amazing characters that we felt for.
The final issue will have one final battle that has Sith vs. Sith, Jedi vs. Sith, Imperials vs. Sith, and Cade Skywalker vs. Sith. The series was one of the best written and best drawn Star Wars titles out there. The characters were not perfect, but they were very lovable and readers could relate to them.
The writer of Legacy, John Ostrander, has been on the book since issue one and has brought readers memorable characters and moments that remind us so much of the Star Wars saga. They even included R2-D2 in a few story arcs [...]

BioWare Strikes Again With Excellent First ‘Dragon Age 2′ Cinematic Trailer
 |
Posted by Merkader | August 17th, 2010 at 5:41 pm |
We reported a while back that Dragon Age II is coming. Today we have the first trailer. Now the trailer is very good looking, however, it is not game play, and you know my thoughts on giving judgment on a game’s look before I see game play.
My biggest gripe so far about this game is it’s name. Dragon Age II seems to have nothing to do with Dragon Age: Origins, nothing at all. I guess I can kind of see naming it Dragon Age since the name is recognizable and the game did well, but people who bought the first game could be disappointed if they buy the sequel and expect the same experience, because they aren’t getting it. One main character to choose from, less choice in the type of character you will play, these are fundamental changes to the game, I feel it makes it not really a sequel but a different game set in the same universe. much like Halo Wars is set in the Halo universe but couldn’t be called Halo 4.
You can see the trailer below.
Dragon Age II comes out March 8th for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Thoughts? [...]

Marvel Announces New ‘Astonishing Thor’ Miniseries
 |
Posted by Guy_Jen | August 17th, 2010 at 3:15 pm |
Thor fans rejoice! We have another ongoing series for Thor just in time for the movie hype to build it up.
The new Astonishing Thor mini-series will debut in November, from the creative team of creators Rob Rodi and Mike Choi with covers by Esad Ribic.
Will it be important to the Thor line up? Especially with the over saturation happening with both Thor and Captain America? There has already been an Ultimate Thor announced as well as a Thor/Iron Man series, so is this too much? [...]

DVD Review: The Descent 2
Descent: Part 2
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by Jon Harris
Starring Shauna MacDonald, Natalie Mendoza, Douglas Hodge, Krysten Cummings
Lionsgate Entertainment
Release date: April 27, 2010
A lot of sequels make the same mistakes: they go too far, they add too much, and they assume bigger is always better. Add to that the familiar idea of “direct-to-dvd” usually is a sign of poor quality. Fortunately for fans of the original The Descent film, the sequel has avoided some of the usual pitfalls and manages to be a relatively satisfying sequel.
Picking up immediately where the original film ends, The Descent 2 clarifies the ambiguous ending of the original, which saw traumatized spelunker Sarah (Shauna MacDonald) escaping from an previously unknown cave system inhabited by inbred, mutated humans called “crawlers.” However, the original film also included an additional scene that implied Sarah had only imagined escape as she descended into madness and was still stuck inside the caves. This ends up being discarded in the new film, with Sarah’s escape being real […]
