Marilyn Manson To Guest On ‘Eastbound & Down’? Hey, If Betty White Can Do It…

The Movie God   |

Eastbound & Down is one of the funniest shows on TV. What started as a six-episode one-and-done first season, is now preparing to premiere their second season due to popular demand. One of the fans of the show happens to be shock-rocker Marilyn Manson…and he wants to make a cameo.

Manson told MTV at the season 2 premiere that he has an itch to step into the shoes of Stevie, the wildly obsessive assistant to Kenny Powers (Danny McBride). While the role of Stevie is already filled by actor Steve Little, show writer/director Jody Hill was honored by the support and interest of Manson, and was quoted saying “I’d love that. He can play Stevie’s brother.” Hill continued “Honestly, I’m honored. I saw Marilyn Manson open up for Nine Inch Nails when I was in high school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, so the fact that he’s heard of the Kenny Powers series is pretty awesome.” [...]

NBC Picks Up J.J. Abrams’ Series With ‘LOST’ Stars Michael Emerson & Terry O’Quinn

The Movie God   |

After the end of LOST, which still has many of us in a deep depression, it was joked that stars Michael Emerson (Benjamin Linus) and Terry O’Quinn (John Locke) should get a show together. That joke was a little more than a joke, and it was recently revealed that producer J.J. Abrams was revving up to pitch a brand new show featuring Emerson and O’Quinn to networks.

Apparently the pitch was well-received, with news now that NBC has won a bidding war — which did include Lost network ABC coming close — landing them the series. Not many details have been revealed about the show, which is currently being called Odd Jobs, but it is said to feature the two actors as former special ops agents. Maybe something along the lines of the movie Red, with retired agents still doing jobs on the side?

Reports indicate that NBC has made a big commitment on the pilot episode, and that the show will be made via Warner Brothers TV and of course, Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions. [...]

Geek Discussion: Are You Watching ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Yet?

The Movie God   |

The pilot episode of Boardwalk Empire, HBO’s new series set during 1920s prohibition, just premiered this past Sunday, and already the ‘net is abuzz about it.

The show follows Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi), a Treasurer and “undisputed ruler of Atlantic City” who at the start of prohibition sees great opportunity to capitalize on the situation and make an awful lot of money. Almost immediately his plans are in motion, with a strong group of people backing him and nothing but profit in view. Naturally, when something like this is taking place, complications are sure to arise…and they do…leaving Nucky to protect what he’s attempting to do and stay on top of the game. Complications aside, Nucky Thompson and his people turn Atlantic City into “The World’s Playground,” a place where laws aren’t always so enforced and one of the few places someone could easily find a drink.

Just to help get the ball rolling, the man himself, Martin Scorsese, directed the 75-minute pilot and set our TVs on fire. [...]

Watch Now: The Great Tauntaun Sleeping Bag Race

Tom Cheredar   |

Geeks of Doom Invades Dragon*Con 2010 banner

At conventions filled with costumed geeks, they don’t have regular competitions of athleticism. No, they do something far better, such as the first ever Tauntaun Sleeping Bag Race at Dragon*Con 2010, which is planned to be an annual event.

For those that aren’t familiar with the reference, online retailer ThinkGeek produces a sleeping bag that resembles the creature Han Solo slices open and places Luke Skywalker into for warmth on the planet Hoth during the first classic Star Wars sequel Empire Strikes Back [Read Must Own: The Famed ‘Star Wars’ Tauntaun Sleeping Bag Is Now A Reality!]

Organizer geeky costumer Juliette Vincent decided to contact ThinkGeek about sponsoring a race, which they agreed to do if Dragon*Con would officially recognize it in their programing.

The top three winners of the race received prizes and a small legion of respect from onlookers. We of course captured this epic display of athleticism in the shaky videos embedded below.

The issue is mapped out like a standard comic until a choice must be made to lead Lizzie’s life in one direction or another. The multiple choices make for an interesting read for fans of the series.

The Unwritten #17 itself was a very interesting read. Most comics are a quick read while this issue of The Unwritten was a pretty fulfilling read. Certain choices lead Lizzie into a life of incarceration while others lead Lizzie down the right path of the series plotlines [...]

Kevin Smith’s Horror Movie ‘Red State’ Adds John Goodman To Cast

The Movie God   |

Talks of a horror movie by director Kevin Smith have been present for a few years now, but financing seemed unlikely for the majority of that time.

Not too long ago, Smith announced that he had finally obtained backing on the film, titled Red State, and that it would be happening soon. Since then, casting has been going on with multiple names added. Today, another actor joined the film, and that actor is John Goodman.

The movie is said to be incredibly dark, being based loosely on Westboro Baptist Church pastor Fred Phelps and his extremist views on pretty much everything, including homosexuality. Not much is known about the plot, but that it will extract a hate-filled religious figure such as Phelps and implant him into a horror movie. If you Google Fred Phelps, you can read all about what he does and what his family and church stand for. You’re almost guaranteed to be infuriated. You can also see how much he looks like that creepy dude from Poltergeist II. [...]

WildStorm No More: DC Closes Down WildStorm and Zuda Imprints

Henchman21   |

It was a day of big news for DC Comics today, and part of the news is the announcement that DC is shutting down their WildStorm imprint as well as shutting down their webcomic division, Zuda Comics.

On a statement on DC’s blog The Source, co-publishers Dan Didio and Jim Lee spoke of the changes occurring within the company and their efforts to focus on what makes most sense to them as a publisher.

What does the end of these two imprints mean? Not much, really. It is bad news for the Zuda creators who are now out of work, as well as a number of WildStorm employees who may lose their job, and we hope they all land on their feet. However, any popular books at WildStorm are sure to be carried over and will see publication under DC’s main line.

WildStorm was launched in 1992 and was founded by Jim Lee as the publishing house for his first Image Comics series, Wild C.A.T.S. With the success of that book, Lee was able to add more books to the line, such as Stormwatch, Backlash, and Gen 13 [...]

Blu-ray Review: A Scanner Darkly

A Scanner Darkly Blu-ray DVD

A Scanner Darkly
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by Richard Linklater
Starring Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Winona Ryder, Woody Harrelson, Rory Cochrane
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment
Release date: September 7, 2010

Here is a film meant to be existentially frightening. It shows the power of drugs and the frailty of the human spirit, two main contributions that can put the human soul at an extreme vulnerability. Director Richard Linklater never diverts its attention to concentrate on anything else. Only when we realize the descent the characters in A Scanner Darkly have to go through do we get disturbed. Like most great science-fiction films, one succeeds the best when it explores the unexplored depths of the human mind.

The film’s unusual look lures us into its web of disheartening themes. Like his previous film that dealt with extensively analyzing of dreams, Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly adopts that film’s visual flair by using an unorthodox way of mixing animation with reality. The actors, décor, and environment inhabit their true form, but the difference is the way they are presented; in animation. It is a laborious process to achieve this but the tone the film carries throughout the movie because of this animation is something completely fascinating and odd […]

Remember how good the J.J. Abrams reboot of Star Trek was? Remember how it took a 1960’s sci-fi show that lasted three seasons and updated it for a modern audience in a way that was both faithful to the original and exciting for newcomers? Good, because Lost In Space is here as a reminder of how easy it is to get all those things wrong.

As most box office buffs know, the movie is notable for being the film that finally ended Titanic’s number one reign at the box office. That might be the best thing I can say about this movie.

Laughable dialog (not in a good way), a meandering plot involving time travel, a bloated running time, and dated CGI really sink what is essentially an interesting premise. It’s the Swiss Family Robinson but in space. That idea intrigues me, but they really squandered what could have been a fun sci-fi flick […]

Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’ Puts Together A Voice Cast

The Movie God   |

A group of actors have been assembled to voice roles in Tim Burton‘s feature adaptation of his own short film, Frankenweenie.

And as for the names joining the film, they’re all familiar with the ways of Burton. The first four voices signed include Martin Landau, who appeared in the director’s Ed Wood and provided a voice in the Burton-produced 9; Winona Ryder, who starred in both Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice; Catherine O’Hara, who also starred in Beetlejuice and offered her voice for The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Martin Short, who was one of the many stars in Mars Attacks!, will both be voicing five different characters each.

Burton first made the short film in 1984, which told the story of a man whose dog is hit by a car and killed. Instead of mourning his loss, he decides to re-animate the animal much along the same lines as the classic tale of Frankenstein. The short was filmed in a live-action black and white style (you can watch it here), but this time around he’ll use his stop-motion animation talents to bring his story to the big screen. [...]

Comic Review: Dracula: The Company of Monsters #1

Written by Daryl Gregory
Art by Scott Godlewski

Release date: August 25, 2010
Price: $3.99

Apparently, vampires are kind of popular these days, for some reason. Fortunately, Dracula: The Company of Monsters #1 isn’t about just any vampire, but it’s about the biggest granddaddy vampire of them all, so it’s definitely trying to set itself apart. The story goes into the “real” history of Dracula, as told by Evan, a researcher for some kind of large, family owned company. Evan has been tasked by uncle to track down information about Vlad the Impaler, specifically the spells used to turn Vlad into the big D. From there, it looks like Evan’s uncle want’s to bring old Drac into this century and do…something? I don’t know exactly what they plan to do, but if it involves a blood sucker, you know it’s going to be evil [...]

Miso Wants To Provide More Accurate TV Ratings

Tom Cheredar   |

I am one of the few people among my acquaintances that is utterly uninterested in using location-based check-in services like Foursquare, Gowalla, and Facebook Places. When I’m out and about I tend to make a solid effort to experience the real world, since I’m usually sitting at home watching movies or television shows.

Miso — a service that’s been described as Foursquare for couch potatoes — makes perfect sense to me. It allows for users to “check-in” when they are watching a movie, television show, or web program (such as the entire lineup from Revision3). And just like Foursquare, users can attain special badges for checking in often or for specific shows.

You can comment on each show, see what your friends are watching or have been watching, and basically it allows you to share the experience with others in a unique way that wouldn’t bother anyone not watching [...]

Beastie Boy Adam Yauch’s Oscilloscope Laboratories Grabs Holiday Horror ‘Rare Exports’

The Movie God   |

Oscilloscope Laboratories, the film company started by Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch, has acquired the rights to Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, a new horror-comedy from Finland that takes childhood fantasy to a whole new realm.

The movie comes from director Jalmari Helander, who based it on his own popular short films, and tells the story of an archeological excavation that turns up none other than Santa Claus himself. Unfortunately, he’s not quite the Santa we’ve all grown up knowing from stories and songs.

Of the acquisition, Yauch said “This is really a unique film, the filmmaking exceptional, Jalmari’s sense of timing, perfect. I’m tempted to say it’s like the Coen brothers meets The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, but RARE EXPORTS is so original in its feel and approach that I’ll refrain from such comparisons and simply say: gas up your snowmobiles, load your shotguns and smoke ‘em if you got ‘em — ’cause we intend to uncage this sucker in theaters for the holidays.” [...]

Mars Attacks!
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by Tim Burton
Starring Jack Nicholson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman, Jack Black, Pierce Brosnan, Annette Bening, Glenn Close
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment
Release Date September 7, 2010

If anything can be learned from Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks!, I believe it is this: Any movie that is based off a card game is not headed to anywhere good.

You can pretty much gather the plotline of the movie just by reading the title, but just for sake of the review, let’s go through the basics. When UFOs are discovered flying toward planet Earth, The President and Washington’s top scientists debate on what their next course of action should be. Believing that the visitors are a friendly bunch, the President sends our military to greet them as they land. With the whole world watching, aliens show their true colors and they don’t appear to be in the mood to give hugs. Now, as Mars attacks, it will take an unlikely hero to step up and defend the Earth from being destroyed […]

Supernatural: The Complete Fifth Season

Starring Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins
Warner Brothers Home Entertainment
Release Date: September 7, 2010

Back in the 80s and 90s, we watched the Ghostbusters take care of all of the ghosts, ghouls, and everything that went “bump” in the night. And as much as I loved watching them do their thing, there are now two guys, brothers in fact, that are a lot more badass now than ever. Enter Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester, the stars of the hit CW TV series Supernatural.

For the past five years we have watched them hunt and kill almost everything from ghosts to demons, wendigos, vampires, and even angels. No matter what you can always count on them. And just in time for the season 6 premiere, which airs September 24, 2010 on the CW, we have the Season 5 release on Blu-ray and DVD […]

Blu-ray Review: THX-1138

Three-D   |

THX-1138 Blu-ray DVD

THX 1138
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by George Lucas
Starring Robert Duvall, Donald Pleasence, Don Pedro Colley, Maggie McOmie, Ian Wolfe
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment
Release date: September 7, 2010

Complacent with his narrative and uninspired to produce anything more profound because he is relying on his visuals to do the work, director George Lucas attempts to create a 25th century utopian future gone awfully awry. Literary minds depicted such sterile, lifeless, and bleak environments with precise detail. Orwell (1984), Huxley (A Brave New World), and filmmaker Stanley Kubrick (2001: A Space Odyssey) tackled dystopian and futuristic atmospheres with a potent narrative behind it. They called to our attention truly believable and paradoxical relationships that integrated humanity with sterility, freedom with captivity.

Lucas’ 1971 science-fiction film THX-1138 lacks his predecessors’ originality because he is not capable of excavating beyond his beautifully eerie aesthetics. If he would be able to he would find a story that would be broader and deeper in its range. Instead, THX-1138 is a film sadly reduced to being revered merely for its visuals […]

‘Friday Night Lights’ Star Kyle Chandler & Elle Fanning Join J.J. Abrams’ ‘Super 8′

The Movie God   |

Not since May have we heard anything significant regarding the ultra-secretive new project from director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg, called Super 8. Back then it was the release of the unique teaser trailer (Read: Watch Now! Teaser Trailer For J.J. Abrams & Steven Spielberg’s ‘Super 8′ Released), which did its job in grabbing our attentions, but was also created before any actors were even cast.

The movie had remained uncast since the release of the teaser, until now of course. Two new talents have joined the film in Kyle Chandler, who’s best known for his head coach role on TV’s Friday Night Lights and from Peter Jackson’s King Kong, and Elle Fanning, the younger sister of Dakota Fanning who’s done plenty of acting herself, including The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and the upcoming holiday film, The Nutcracker in 3D.

At the moment, all details are being kept under wraps, including who these two new additions will be playing. [...]
