Matrix Reloaded
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by The Wachowski Brothers
Starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, Laurence Fishburne
Warner Bros Home Entertainment
Release date: September 7, 2010
Ah, remember the halcyon days of early 2003? When everyone still loved The Matrix and we all waited with anticipation to see the genius that would be Matrix Reloaded? You remember those days, don’t you, and you had bought into the hype just as much as everyone else. Nowadays, there are more people who complain about Matrix Reloaded than those who try to defend it. The Matrix trilogy has been available on Blu-ray for a number of years, and the first film has been available by itself for a while, and now Warner Bros Home Entertainment has gotten around to releasing the second movie by itself. The question you will have to answer for yourself is whether you just want to watch the first film and forget the others exist, or if you want to watch the entire trilogy as a whole.
I’m actually not as much against this movie as a lot of people are. Sure it gets a bit, shall we say, goofy towards the end, but it’s filmed with some pretty incredible and memorable action sequences. I still marvel at the execution of the highway chase scene that is very much the high point of the film. Hugo Weaving still turns in an entertaining performance as Agent Smith, and makes any scene he’s in worth watching [...]

Comic Review: Amazing Spider-Man #641

Amazing Spider-Man #641
Written by Joe Quesada
Art by Paolo Rivera and Joe Quesada, Danny Miki and Richard Isanove
Letters by Joe Caramagna
Price: $3.99
Marvel Comics
Release date: September 9, 2010
At the time of its release, Marvel’s decision to make Peter Parker single again after years of being married to Mary-Jane Watson was met with mixed emotions at best. Many felt that the story told in “One More Day” was inconsistent with previous Spider-Man stories, especially the part where Peter makes a deal with Mephisto to rescue his Aunt May, which many thought was too cosmic, or out there a concept to appear in the more street-level Spider-Man. Others wondered why Marvel felt that an unmarried Spider-Man is so much more superior to a married one. Over the last four issues, we have been revisiting the “One More Day” storyline in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, with a story called “One Moment in Time,” brought to us by writer and Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada. Amazing Spider-Man #641 brings the storyline to a close, which is a good thing, because this was pretty much a completely unnecessary story that went on for three issues too long [...]

TV Series Based On James Cameron’s ‘True Lies’ Coming To ABC

Recently it was reported that James Cameron was adapting his own action spy movie, True Lies, into a TV series, and that it would soon be presented to networks.
It didn’t take long to impress and sell a network on the concept; it’s being reported that ABC has landed a deal on the True LiesRené Echevarria will write and handle the day-to-day operations on. ABC tried to go down the spy TV road before with an attempt to turn Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith into a series, but that didn’t work out. They’re also currently developing a new Charlie’s Angels series, as well.
For those who have not seen it (and you really should), True Lies tells the story of your average guy named Harry (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who seemingly leads a normal, boring life. He’s been married to his wife Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis) for a long while and their romance has become stale, they have a teen daughter named Dana (Eliza Dushku) who hates them, and he works at an office as a computer salesman. Trailer For Ron Howard’s ‘The Dilemma’ Starring Vince Vaughn & Kevin James Released

The first trailer for Ron Howard‘s new comedy, The Dilemma, has been released online.
The movie stars Vince Vaughn and Kevin James as best friends and colleagues, who seem to have everything going for them. They impressive some important people at work, they both have great girlfriends (Jennifer Connelly and Winona Ryder), and all seems perfect…that is until one of them spots his buddy’s lady-friend messing around with another guy. This puts him in the unfortunate position of having to choose between breaking the bad news and jeopardizing all that is going so well, or just letting it be what it is.
The Dilemma doesn’t really look like a Ron Howard movie; not until you spot Clint Howard, of course. But it does look like it could be a pretty funny buddy flick.
Be sure to head on over to the other side to read a full synopsis and check out the trailer for Ron Howard’s The Dilemma right now! [...]

New Movies This Week: Which Will You Go See? [September 17, 2010]
 |
Posted by Dave3 | September 17th, 2010 at 4:27 pm |

Teen comedy, crime drama, intense horror, romance, and an animated kid’s film. I think I just heard Keanu say “Whoa!” The Studios are offering up a veritable potpourri of cinema this weekend. It feels like an oddity to me to see such degree of diversity at the box office, but I know it’s probably not. It’s just been a while and we’re not used to it.
This has been M. Night Shyamalan week at Doom HQ as we prepare for our Flix of Doom review of Devil, along with a discussion of Shyamalan’s body of work. So that’s where my geeky ass is going to be planted at the theater this weekend.
I wanna know what movie YOU are planning to see this weekend?
Check out your choices here below [...]

Comics Review: Daytripper #10
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | September 17th, 2010 at 2:36 pm |

Daytripper #10
Written and Drawn by Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon
Colors by Dave Stewart
Letters by Sean Konot
DC/Vertigo Comics
Price: $2.99
Release date: September 9, 2010
The books that matter are the ones that stick with you, that make you think about your life and how you can improve and what you’re doing wrong. The books that matter are the ones that make you laugh and cry at the same page. The books that matter are the ones that you never want to forget for the rest of your life. Daytripper #10 is a book that is going to stick with me, and it is a book that matters.
Over the last ten issues, the Brazilian art team of brothers Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon have shown us the life and deaths of Bras de Oliva Domingo. Each issue has shown a moment from the character’s life at different stages of his life, whether it be birth, childhood, adulthood, or old age, and each issue has ended with the character’s death. Does it matter that we’re never told if these are alternate realities, different dimensions, or any other sci-fi gobbledygook that comics readers are generally predisposed to jump to? No. Any explanation would ruin this comic. It is simply the story of life. His life, my life, anyone’s life. I don’t live in Brazil, I don’t have kids, in fact, I have nothing in common with the main character, but every issue affected me in some way [...]

‘Borat’ Star Sacha Baron Cohen To Become Queen Singer Freddie Mercury

If you could pick anyone to play Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury in a movie about the band, your brain probably wouldn’t jump to Borat and Bruno star Sacha Baron Cohen at first…but it should.
It’s been announced that Baron Cohen will indeed be playing the flamboyant front man with legendary vocal talents in a new movie being backed by GK Films, Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Productions, and Queen Films. A script for the movie, which will be about the entire band and not just Mercury, is being written by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon). The currently untitled movie will focus on the band toward their peak and building up to their 1985 performance at Live Aid.
Baron Cohen is best known for his comedic abilities, but it’s quite clear that the man has a great ability to become someone else and really sell it. In addition to his Da Ali G Show creations, the British actor has also appeared in many different roles ranging from an Italian hair tonic salesman/con artist in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, a gay French race car driving champion in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and a royal lemur in the Madagascar movies. 40 Notable Photos From Dragon*Con 2010

We don’t necessarily need to do much of an introduction for the 40 notable photos taken by Geeks of Doom photographer Derek Deweese (and a few by myself, which you can tell by the crappy quality of my iPhone 3G) at Dragon*Con 2010.
You can imagine the difficulty in sifting through your photos each night when there are five convention-sized hotels filled with costumed geeks. To do this over the good part of a week, well, you can see why it might be *somewhat* of a task.
But, alas, check out our last batch of photo coverage of this year’s Dragon*Con after the jump [...]

‘Black Dynamite’ Comic on the Way
 |
Posted by seaberry | September 16th, 2010 at 5:52 pm |

This project has not been formally announced yet, but yesterday, finished pages from a Black Dynamite comic hit the internet.
For those not in the know, Black Dynamite is the mock blaxploitation, or moxploitation, film about a badass federal agent who wages war against “The Man” after his brother dies from overdosing on “smack.” Michael Jai White (Spawn, The Dark Knight) is the lead character Black Dynamite.
I LOVED the movie and thought that it was a perfect homage to the 70′s blaxploitation films and a witty satire at the same time. I am eagerly awaiting a formal announcement on this comic from Ape Entertainment. I will buy the singles and the trade. I want this hardcover on my shelf. I can’t wait to read Black Dynamite’s battles against “The Man” on a monthly basis [...]

Mark Wahlberg Brawls As Christian Bale Struggles In The First Trailer For ‘The Fighter’

The first trailer for the new movie, The Fighter, has shown up online after a lengthy trip through various stages of production. The film was originally set to be directed by Darren Aronofsky before David O. Russell stepped in for the job, and production began well over a year ago in July of last year.
The Fighter stars Mark Wahlberg as boxer and New England legend “Irish” Mickey Ward at a time when he was trying to make a name for himself as a fighter, while at the same time taking fights with boxers expected to demolish him just so he could grab a paycheck. It also follows his brother, Dickie Eckland (played by Christian Bale), who also used to box (once going the distance against the great Sugar Ray Leonard) before a drug problem forced him to retire and move on to become one of Ward’s trainers.

Earlier this month, Quirk Books released their latest mash-up novel Night Of The Living Trekkies, written by Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall.

Paramount Developing Movie Based On Spike TV’s ‘Deadliest Warrior’

It’s being reported that Paramount Pictures is officially developing a new movie with their sister station, Spike TV, based on the network’s popular series, Deadliest Warrior. The studio has set Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps Entertainment to handle the project.
In the series, legendary historical warriors face off to see which of them is the best of the best. In the episode, groups of experts representing the two warriors bring many different weapons that were often used in battle, and then complete tests on dummies, pig carcasses, and complex ballistic bodies, complete with skeletal structures, internal organs, and blood. The tests, while often shockingly messy and violent, enable doctors and specialists to study precisely which of the weapons would prevail in a real battle, and then a sophisticated computer program runs one thousand simulated battles using the input they incorporate to determine who the winner would be.
Some of the more interesting battles that have been presented so far include Spartans vs. Ninjas, Samurais vs. Vikings, Mafia vs. Yakuza, KGB vs. CIA, and some one-on-one historical figure battles such as William Wallace vs. Shaka Zulu, Atilla the Hun vs. Alexander the Great, and Jesse James vs. Al Capone. Kevin James To Join The UFC In Untitled Mixed Martial Arts Movie

Sony Pictures has reached a new deal that will see King of Queens and Paul Blart: Mall Cop star Kevin James becoming a mixed martial arts fighter.
In the movie, James will play a physics teacher who decides to become an MMA fighter in an attempt to make some money and save the music program and his best friend’s job at the school he works at, which has decided to make some major budget cuts. Before long, James’ character finds himself fighting on the ultimate stage: the UFC.
Mixed Martial Arts has exploded into the spotlight over the last handful of years, and continues to grow at a rapid pace. Movies trying to take advantage of the sport’s popularity have been made, such as Never Back Down and Red Belt, but no comedies (which is what this is assumed to be) yet. It even makes a lot of sense for James to be starring in the movie; the comedic talent has been a huge fan and supporter of the sport and the UFC for a long time now, and getting to play around in that sandbox should be an exciting prospect for him. [...]

DVD Review: After Dark Horrorfest IV – The Final

The Final
DVD
DIRECTOR: Joey Stewart
STARRING: Marc Donato, Jascha Washington, Whitney Hoy, Justin Arnold, Travis Tedford
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
RELEASE DATE: March 23, 2010
For four straight years now, After Dark Horrorfest: 8 Films to Die For has been unleashed. Eight original horror films to quench your thirst for blood and gore and screams galore. Last year I was able to check out and review their third collection of horrors (Read: DVD Review: After Dark Horrorfest III: 8 Films To Die For), and was rather excited to check out their new slate this year! Instead of cramming every review into one mammoth review, this year we’ll take it one flick at a time, with this little opener stuck at the top of each one.
I watched quite a few of the Horrorfest lineup before getting to this point, and until now, I was rather impressed with this year’s offerings. A few of the other titles were a little rocky and left me disappointed and wanting more, while a few others surpassed all expectation in a blast of pleasant surprise. But just like each year has a foreign film, it would appear that each year also has one movie that doesn’t play to you at all. Not even the tiniest little bit. [...]
