Who Needs Jaws? Korean Monster Flick ‘Chawz’ Brings On The Killer Pig

Magnet Releasing, a branch of Magnolia Pictures, has acquired the North American rights to the Korean monster movie titled Chawz. The movie comes from director Jeong-won Shin and will act as a sort of tribute to monster movies, telling the story of a vicious and mammoth wild boar that attacks tourists who are there looking to pick organic vegetables, forcing a group of people to set off on a mission to hunt and kill the beast. It is also said to show off some spectacularly gory special effects.
Tom Quinn, who acts as the Senior Vice President of Magnet, said of the acquisition “If Jaws was looking to branch out to dry land, without a doubt he’d want to be Chawz. Another worthy addition to the Korean monster hall of fame and the Magnet Releasing library.”
Continue reading on to check out a preview of the movie that’s not of the best quality, but gives you an idea of what we’re dealing with here. [...]

Dragon*Con 2010: Watch Now: Venture Bros. Creators Turn Panel Into ’70s Talkshow

The minds behind Adult Swim hit show The Venture Bros. – Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer — decided to meet their adoring fans differently for their Dragon*Con 2010 panel by setting up some comfy chairs, a coffee table and cheesy ’70′s music that played whenever the pair wasn’t speaking.
Call it convention fatigue or boredom, but Publick and Hammer thought it would be better to treat the scheduled time as an old school talkshow — Maury Povich style. They took turns running through the crowded ballroom allowing fans to ask questions and receive a rose if it was deemed worthy of answering.
We captured the whole thing on a shaky, amateurishly handled FlipCam and have subsequently uploaded the videos to YouTube, which you can watch below.
Some of the high points include Bill Hader replacing the voice of Stephen Cobert as Professor Richard Impossible, why a Venture Bros. feature-length film is probably a bad idea and lots of news regarding who will be back for the last part of the season.
Check out the embedded video after the jump. [...]

A brand new clip has been released for the new thriller, Insidious.
The movie is directed by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell, who co-created Saw together, and produced by Jason Blum, Steven Schneider, and Oren Peli, the team behind the indie horror hit Paranormal Activity.
The movie follows a family whose son slips into a coma before strange, inexplicable things start to happen, forcing them into a fight to keep evil spirits from trapping the boy in their realm.
Click on over to the other side now to get a peek at the movie in this new clip, which shows a sketch artist drawing out what a psychic is seeing near the young comatose boy.

‘Caprica’ Returning To SyFy Early, Oct. 5 Premiere

Fans of the Battlestar Galactica prequel series Caprica no longer have to wait until January 2011 for new episodes, according to the SyFy Channel.
The network announced that the show’s 1.5 season premiere will now air October 5 at 10 PM EST following the premiere of Stargate Universe. Sanctuary, which was originally intended for this time slot, has been bumped back to October 15 — a Friday.
For the majority of Caprica fans (e.g., people who are reading this article) the new time slot gives them back their Friday nights, but who knows how it’ll affect DVR and TiVo numbers. One thing that may hurt the show on a Tuesday may be the non-geek crowd that perhaps watched the show because nothing else compared to it on a Friday night.
Time will tell, but I’ve heard there are multiple Zoe Greystones for the last half of the season, so I can’t imagine ratings would dip.
Check out a clip of the upcoming episodes [...]

Al Pacino & Joe Pesci To Join Robert De Niro For Martin Scorsese Mafia Movie

Before we get to the news…best headline ever, right? These are the things movie fans dream about hearing about.
In February of this year, word came out of the Berlin Film Festival that legendary director Martin Scorsese was working on a new mob movie called The Irishman with Robert De Niro, re-teaming the duo responsible for creating one of the great mob movies of all time in Goodfellas. The only thing about this movie, was that it would be more of a reflection film, with an old mobster looking back on his life of crime. The movie will be based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt, which details the life of Frank “the Irishman” Sheeran — one of the prime suspects in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa — as told by the Irishman himself.
To add to that, now we have word of two more potential castings that would make this so much more exciting than it already was. [...]

Mickey Rourke Set To Become The Iceman In Richard Kuklinksi Movie

Last August, we covered a story about the Iceman, Richard Kuklinski, one of the world’s most infamous serial killers and mafia hitmen (Read: Best News Ever: Ice Man Richard Kuklinski Movie Delayed Due To Channing Tatum Casting Possibility). At the time, it was revealed that Philip Carlo, who authored the book The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer, was pulling out of his movie deal to adapt the book with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura because Bonaventura wanted to cast Channing Tatum to play Kuklinski.
This would have been one of the worst casting choices in the history of cinema, and everyone including Carlo seemed to know it, which led to the halt and retreat from further progress. At the time, Carlo made it known that his preference was for Mickey Rourke to take on the role, and though many of you felt actors like James Gandolfini or Tom Wilkinson would be best, it’s now being reported that Rourke is indeed attached to star. Watch Now: M. Night Shyamalan Learns That No One Likes M. Night Shyamalan

It’s no secret that the popularity of director M. Night Shyamalan has plummeted after his past few movies, but he has clearly not recognized the decline in quality or his fan base, as was made clear when a reporter recently asked him about it during a conference for his most recent film, The Last Airbender.
Since then, the next step down has come in the form of Devil, the new horror movie that Shyamalan isn’t directing but is a producer on. Anyone who has seen the trailer for this movie running in theaters has shared stories of the crowd booing, laughing, and all-around reacting about as negatively as a filmmaker could fear a crowd’s reaction to seeing something with their name attached to it.
Jumping on this wave of negative criticism, a new video has been created to spoof Shyamalan and the slow-yet-reluctant realization of his own dwindling fame. As you might expect, he stubbornly refuses to believe this could be happening to him and tries to figure out what evil forces could be behind it all, and the resulting parody is quite hilarious. RELEASE DATE: August 24, 2010
Reviewing The Final Season of LOST is not the easiest thing to pull off. If you have any interest at all in this sixth and last season, then you’ve seen seasons one through five already (at least you better have!). And if you’ve seen seasons one through five, then you were most likely just as excited to inhale the sixth as everyone else, and already know exactly what you think of it!
That said, this final season was met with a battle of varying opinions. Most Lost faithfuls came to love the way things were wrapped up; some had difficulty warming up to it, myself included, but in the end it all found a way to work. On the other hand, there were a surprising amount of fans who were enraged by what they saw, unfortunately. [...]

Geek Discussion: ‘True Blood’ Season 3 Finale: What Did You Think?
 |
Posted by CrueChik | September 13th, 2010 at 1:06 am |
Greetings vamplings, tis I, Cruechik, back once again to discuss my favorite undead creatures. This time, it’s the vamps of True Blood, which after two long weeks of waiting, finally aired the finale of season 3 tonight.
Warning: If you haven’t seen Season 3 of True Blood, there be SPOILERS.
True Blood Season 3 saw the introduction of all kinds of ‘supes including werewolves — most importantly the drool-inducing Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello); fairies; and crazy inbred werepanthers. Our heroine, Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and her favorite (or is he…hmm…?) vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) have had a series of skirmishes this season, and at the end of last epi’s cliffie, it once again appeared the part fae part human Sookie might not survive. Of more concern to me was whether or not VILF Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) would meet the true death. It didn’t look too good for Eric, who was out in the daylight frying like a catfish in a cast iron pan, handcuffed to insane “I carry my dead lover’s remains around in a candy jar” vamp king, Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare) [...]

Book Review: Stealing Fire

Stealing Fire
Written by Jo Graham
Orbit Publishing
Release Date: May 25, 2010
Do you like historical fiction? Do you like fantasy novels? Are you looking for a book that makes you think? If you answered yes to all of these questions, then read on, because I have the perfect book for you.
Stealing Fire by Jo Graham tells the story of the chaos surrounding the death of Alexander the Great and its aftermath through the ever-loyal hero of the novel, Lydias of Miletus. Lydias who, although was once a slave boy, becomes one of Alexander’s soldiers. After the death of the king, Lydias chooses to follow Ptolemy, one of Alexander’s generals who made Egypt his territory. Ptolemy and Lydias, with the help of the Persian archer Artashir and the eunuch Bagoas, Alexander’s lover, must fight to save the fate of the new city of Alexandria and Alexander’s legacy.
I went into this book without many expectations having never read much about Alexander the Great or any of Jo Graham’s other novels beforehand. I loved the actions scenes, they were great and pretty frequent; however, at times, the novel moved too slowly for me. [...]
