‘The Walking Dead’ Zombies Invade New York City

Obvious Zombie   |

Greetings tasty morsels, it is I, your favorite undead bad boy ObZomb and I’m delighted to report that my very own brethren have invaded New York City!

That’s right, you tired, huddled masses, my peeps were out in full force today at New York’s Penn Station. What, you thought you could have your typical little commute or your day trip into the city without turning into lunch for my fine friends? Think again! Oh, wait, you can’t, your brains are what’s on the menu! Yummmmmm…..

One of the victims, um, bystanders, Krick714, sent in a few photographs of my fine-looking Walker pals out on the streets in New York. I’ve posted them here below for you all. Look at those silly humans in the background going about their business as if they’re not about to be chomped on. Typical New Yorkers!

Yes, dear readers, it’s a nice day for a zombie invasion. Now, now, don’t act like you didn’t know this was coming. It’s happening everywhere! It’s an uprising I say to protest the upcoming reality television show The Walking Dead, where cruel humans attack harmless zombies who only just want a bite to eat. There’s nothing wrong with a little nibble here and there, is there? [...]

‘Superman: Earth One’ Is For The Twilight Age… Really?

MK2Fac3   |

Superman Earth One

Early reviews for the first entry in the DC Comics brand new line of graphic novels, Superman: Earth One by writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis, are out and so far they’ve been pretty mixed, but one specific write-up stood out amongst the others.

In an article in The New York Post yesterday, the writer refers to Superman’s new look in Superman: Earth One as “more Robert Pattinson from the Twilight movies than Christopher Reeve from the Superman films.” I have yet to read the book yet, but oh boy… there’s so much wrong with this.

The article focuses a lot of attention on the different approaches that JMS has taken with the character in this new universe, basically calling Superman a moody hipster, which is kind of hilarious if you think about that for a second. My main problem with the article is not necessarily what is reported in the news, but what they chose to focus on. This piece is nothing more than a modern fashion article with references to hoodies and skinny ties, but DC Comics has always attempted to keep fashion relevant when updating a character (in an alternate universe in this instance). Geek Discussion: Does Charlie Chaplin’s 1928 Film ‘The Circus’ Show Someone On A Cell Phone?

The Movie God   |

Who doesn’t love a good mystery?

Many of you who have a strong love of films and what goes into making them probably watch a lot of the special features that come on DVDs and Blu-rays. For some of us, they can sometimes be just as good or even better than the movie we’ve just seen. There’s just something about seeing all of the many steps of creating a movie and seeing the cast and crew on the set doing their thing that’s simply fascinating to witness. Along with these great making of features, there’s often plenty of other features that concentrate on various parts of a movie’s journey to the big screen and our waiting eyes.

One such movie fan and filmmaker named George Clarke, while checking out some of the special features on Charlie Chaplin‘s 1928 film, The Circus, noticed something rather strange. The feature showcased the film’s premier at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood, and at one moment, it would appear that a woman walks by the camera while talking on a cell phone! Did we mention this was 1928?! [...]

New Artwork Shows ‘What If’ The Avengers Existed Centuries Ago

Henchman21   |

The Avengers: Earth's First Heroes

Francisco Francavilla, formerly the artist for books such as Zorro and soon to be artist on Black Panther: Man Without Fear for Marvel as well as the Commissioner Gordon backups in Detective Comics for DC, has presented a unique vision of an Avengers team from the Dark Ages.

Posted on the Comic Twart blog for their Marvel “What If” week, the sepia-toned cover image — which has the title The Avengers: Earth’s First Heroes — shows what four of the Avengers might look like if they were around a few hundred years ago.

Click the image here at right for larger, full view.

Francavilla said the artwork was inspired by an old pitch idea he had for a Marvel “What If” story, and described the scenario as the Avengers fighting “evils and undead armies.” [...]

‘The Walking Dead’ Zombies To Hit Major Cities Tomorrow

Empress Eve   |

Head’s up tomorrow if you’re heading into a major city, there’s going to be zombie outbreaks to contend with!

In a stunt for AMC’s upcoming series The Walking Dead, several zombie outbreaks will occur in 26 major cities around major landmarks throughout the United States and internationally, starting at daybreak tomorrow.

In my area, an event will be staged at New York’s Brooklyn Bridge, while the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.; Big Ben in London; the Prado Museum in Madrid; the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul; and the Acropolis in Athens will also be hit during this global zombie invasion.

Check out the list below of the cities being invaded tomorrow.

The stunts will start overseas beginning at daybreak in Taipei and Hong Kong on Tuesday, October 26, and continue in the other cities, finishing up at the show’s Los Angeles premiere.

The Walking Dead premieres on AMC on Halloween, Sunday, October 31 at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. [...]

Revisiting A Classic: 13 Moments From ‘Back To The Future’ That Still Get A Reaction

Empress Eve   |

Back To the FutureIn honor of the 25th anniversary of the release of Back To The Future, which arrives for the first time on Blu-ray tomorrow, and the date when the events of the movie begin (October 25), Universal re-released the film this weekend in select theaters across the country. I went to a packed Saturday morning showing, and oh does this film totally hold up over time.

I’ve seen Back To The Future countless times on DVD (and VHS!) and there are certain scenes and quotes that always make me laugh and several moments that give me chills or make me want to cheer. That’s why going to see the movie in a theater filled with fellow fans is such a great experience — there’s an entire theater of people to laugh and clap along with.

For instance, at a re-release of The Nightmare Before Christmas the audience sang along to all the tunes, while at a midnight showing of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan everyone held their fist up and yelled “Khaaaannnn!!!” along with Kirk. [...]

Digital Deal: Star Trek: Insurrection

Star Trek: Insurrection

Amazon is offering up Star Trek: Insurrection for purchase for only $3.99 through their Video On Demand service.

This digital deal is only for today, Monday, October 25 until midnight PST, so grab it while you can. The digital version is regularly $9.99, and the 24-hour rental is $2.99.

Visit the Star Trek: Insurrection product page to purchase the film.

Released in 1998, Insurrection is the ninth film in the Star Trek franchise and the third with the full cast of the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series, starring Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard. Its predecessor, First Contact, was a big hit, but this follow-up failed to thrill the fans.

Synopsis: When the crew of the Enterprise learn of a Federation plot against the inhabitants of a unique planet, Capt. Picard begins an open rebellion. [...]

All Fall Down: A Look At The Masterful Dominoes Of ‘V For Vendetta’

Empress Eve   |

V For Vendetta

Tonight, the FX Network showed V for Vendetta, the 2006 Wachowski Brothers film based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd.

While watching V For Vendetta, I realized that the movie has one of the coolest domino-knockdown scenes ever. The pattern was created using thousands of black and red dominoes, which form the shape of a V within a circle — the symbol of the film’s protagonist, V (played by Hugo Weaving) — and took four professional domino assemblers 200 hours to build.

In a pivotal sequence in the film, we see the vigilante V finishing up the pattern, while Inspector Finch (Stephen Rea) tells a colleague what he thinks V’s plans are (there’s also flashes to the chaos in the city that V has already caused). The montage then shows V “touching-off” the domino pattern in what results in a visually stunning moment in the film.

You can watch a video below from YouTube that someone created by editing together only the scenes with the dominoes [...]

Geek Humor: ‘Star Wars’ Parody Comic Strip ‘Blue Milk Special’

Jedi of Doom   |

Star Wars - Blue Milk Special

We here at Geeks of Doom love our sci-fi movies like Star Wars and Star Trek, but another thing we love is parodies of these movie franchises. May I introduce to you Blue Milk Special, a Star Wars comic strip parody site. Not only does this site do parodies of the events in the films, but it also spoofs all the Expanded Universe titles and characters. The featured strip for this month is the Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, which is currently up to part 12.

While this site, like the site Motion Picture Comics, parodies this beloved series, it does pay tribute to it at the same time and makes us ask questions like, “How is Darth Vader able to drink coffee?” Not only does this site poke fun at mainstream characters it also brings the secondary characters to the spotlight by giving us a little insight in their lives. Readers will see that not only did Greedo go after Han Solo, but so did his cousins after his death. In another strip we see Boba Fett riding a dinosaur and someone calling him a “badass” for taming it but the punchline is that he rented it for $20 an hour [...]

Movie Review: Paranormal Activity 2

WordSlinger   |

Paranormal Activity 2

Paranormal Activity 2
Directed by Tod Williams
Starring Sprague Grayden, Katie Featherston, Brian Boland, Molly Ephram, Micah Sloat
Paramount Pictures
Release date: October 22, 2010

It should be noted that a majority of this review was typed on a smartphone while sitting in the theater waiting for something to happen. Okay not really, but it could have been done that way given the amount of down time viewers have between scary parts of Paranormal Activity 2.

It came as no surprise that after the original ultra-low budget original film made millions worldwide that Hollywood would try to capture lightning in a bottle a second time with a sequel. While others have done the same before with weak results (Blair Witch anyone?), it’s likely Paranormal Activity 2 will get the same reaction as the first… because it IS the same as the first.

The first important detail the previews left out is that this sequel is, for 97% of the film, a prequel to the original film. Set roughly two months prior to the events of the first film, Paranormal Activity 2 follows the Rey family, a married couple with two children, including newborn Hunter. After finding their home in disarray from what they believe to be a break-in, they have several security cameras installed. The film combines the footage from these cameras and a single hand-held camera that switches hands at several points [...]

DVD Review: After Dark Horrorfest IV – Hidden

The Movie God   |

Hidden
DVD
DIRECTOR: Pål Øie
STARRING: Arthur Berning, Knut Morten Brekke, Gabriel August Gjønnes, Agnes Karin Haaskjold, Andreas Haugsbø
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
RELEASE DATE: March 23, 2010

For four straight years now, After Dark Horrorfest: 8 Films to Die For has been unleashed. Eight original horror films to quench your thirst for blood and gore and screams galore. Last year I was able to check out and review their third collection of horrors (Read: DVD Review: After Dark Horrorfest III: 8 Films To Die For), and was rather excited to check out their new slate this year! Instead of cramming every review into one mammoth review, this year we’ll take it one flick at a time, with this little opener stuck at the top of each one.

With each Horrorfest (the last two anyway), there’s a foreign horror title included. This year, the movie came from Norway and is called Hidden (Skjult). While there are other titles that hail from other overseas locations like the UK and New Zealand, I say “foreign” meaning that this one is fully subtitled.

Beginning with a tragic accident that sees a boy’s family killed, the story revolves around Kai (Kristoffer Joner) who witnessed the tragedy and is brought back to the town it occurred in when his mother dies. [...]

Six Flags Unveils Absolutely Ridiculous New Superman and Green Lantern Roller Coasters

The Movie God   |

Considering how pocket-draining expensive it is just to park at a Six Flags, let along actually go inside and perhaps even buy something to attempt to eat, it’s not always so exciting to attend the amusement park.

To keep their customers coming back, Six Flags likes to build crazy new attractions, especially roller coasters for all of those enthusiasts out there who are addicted to the thrill. The problem with that is that these days it’s really hard to figure out a way to keep making them bigger, faster, and more extreme than has ever been seen before.

With that, Six Flags would like to introduce us to their new coasters at Magic Mountain: Superman: Escape from Krypton, and Green Lantern. Be sure to click on over to the other side to see a cool video that gives you an idea of what riding these attractions will do to your equilibrium. Hint: it’s not good things. [...]

Disney’s ‘Prep & Landing’ To Return With ‘Operation: Secret Santa’

Empress Eve   |

prep & landing

Last year, Disney premiered Prep & Landing, a half-hour television special about an elite unit of Santa’s Elves known as Prep & Landing.

Walt Disney Animation Studios is planning to bring the unit back in a 7-minute animated short called Prep & Landing: Operation: Secret Santa, with Betty White as the voice of Mrs. Claus.

Prep & Landing: Operation: Secret Santa will air on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) during the holiday classic A Charlie Brown Christmas. Both programs will repeat on Thursday, December 16 from 8:00-9:00 p.m., ET.

The original Prep & Landing was the first television special produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and premiered last December.

Aside from being from Disney, which is enough right there to get me to check it out, the original Christmas special also had Dave Foley as the voice of Wayne, one of the elite elves, and Foley is back for this new adventure! I totally loved the first Prep & Landing and was hoping by now it would be out on DVD, as I think it’s a great holiday story that I’d love to see every year. I actually still have it saved on my DVR (luckily!), and have watched it a few times already, so I’m really looking forward to this follow-up. I only wish it was longer than just 7 minutes [...]

Syfy Orders Pilot For New ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Spinoff Following Young Adama

The Movie God   |

In the Battlestar Galactica spin-off movie, Razor, we got a peek at William Adama (Edward James Olmos) as a much younger soldier.

A short while back, Syfy decided to go a little further with this, planning to create a small online series called Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, which would tell more stories of young Adama and his many trials and tribulations during the great Cylon war. But now things have changed.

Syfy was so fond of the script that they received from Michael Taylor, that they’ve now instead decided to film the online series as an entire pilot episode for what just might become a new spin-off TV series. The plan now is to begin production in early 2011 for a debut at some point in late ’11 to possibly early 2012.

The pilot and possible show is said to take place 20 years after the events of Caprica, Syfy’s current-running spin-off series which tells the story of the creation of the Cylon race, and about 40 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica itself. [...]

Steven Spielberg Set To Direct Machine Uprising In ‘Robopocalypse’

The Movie God   |

A while back, Steven Spielberg was interested in directing an adaptation of the unfinished science fiction novel from author Daniel H. Wilson, Robopocalypse. At the time, the director instead chose to take on his next project, War Horse, but it looks like Spielberg is now ready to return for some hostile robot takeover action.

According to sources, Spielberg has now committed to directing Robopocalypse as his next film. The director was so keen on taking this movie on, that he even began developing it and working on storyboards despite the fact that the book was incomplete and that he decided to do War Horse first.

The novel has since been complete and is scheduled for release in June of 2011, and The Cabin in the Woods writer/director and Cloverfield and Lost scribe, Drew Goddard, has been working on the script right along with Wilson as he finished up work on the book. All has now come together, making it a perfect time for Spielberg to step in and make it happen. [...]

DVD Review: Night Of The Demons (2010)

Empress Eve   |

Night of the Demons

Night Of The Demons
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by Adam Gierasch
Starring Edward Furlong, Shannon Elizabeth, Monica Keena, John F. Beach, Diora Baird, Michael Copon
Entertainment One
Release date: October 19, 2010

While today’s horror filmmakers are either curbing the curse words for PG-13 teen-friendly flicks or increasing the realism for torture porn, Adam Gierasch brings us a fun, but spooky tale perfect for Halloween with his remake Night Of The Demons. This remake invokes the spirit of its predecessor — the 1988 Kevin Tenney film of the same name — by employing lots of blood and gore created mostly through practical effects. The two tales are similar in that party-goers unwittingly unleash a horde of demons on Halloween night, but the original film takes place in a mortuary where a séance releases the demons. Gierasch’s version brings the Halloween party to modern-day New Orleans to a mansion with a mysterious past.

It’s Halloween night and Angela Feld (Shannon Elizabeth) is planning the biggest party in town at the Broussard Mansion, a long-unoccupied New Orleans manse whose previous occupants went missing 85 years prior on the same night its owner, Evangeline Broussard, killed herself by hanging. In an effort to make some cash, Angela lures the paying party-goers to the mansion using its spooky history as bait [...]

Marvel Sends Spider-Man, Thor, Wolverine & More Into The ‘Tron’ Universe

Jedi of Doom   |

Tron and comic book fans can rejoice because this winter Marvel is going to the Grid with their Tron variant covers.

Starting in November with Thor #617 the covers will feature characters as they would look if they were in the world of Tron. While these covers will have nothing to do with the content of the books, they are still pretty cool looking. This is one of the first signs from the Disney-Marvel partnership that started last year, the other being the two issue mini-series Tron: Betrayal which was released earlier this month. The mini-series follows Flynn and the birth of his son Sam. It also shows CLU taking over the Grid and the bond between Tron and Flynn.

We here at Geeks of Doom love these covers, and we have the cover images below for you the readers to check out and comment on.

Marvel has only unveiled ten covers but there may be more on the horizon as the movie draws closer to its December release date. [...]
