Geek Gear: $9 Harry Potter Quidditch T-Shirt

Empress Eve   |

Teefury Harry Potter Quidditch T-Shirt

After a depressing Election Day here in the United States, I figured I’d reread some Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows before bed to get my mind off today’s events.

Before I shut the computer down, I figured I’d check to see tonight’s special over at TeeFury. Much to my surprise, it’s a Harry Potter-related t-shirt!

For only $9, you can grab today’s special titled “Ambercrombie and Quidditch” by designer spacemonkeydr. It’s a brown shirt with gold writing in the style of those Abercrombie & Fitch athletic-style tees. This limited-edition shirt is for the Gryffindor quidditch team, est. 1092, and is for the team seeker, and has the golden snitch in the center.

The sale at Teefury began at midnight (November 3, 2010) and will continue for 24 hours, and once it’s over, it’s gone forever, so grab it now if you want it [...]

Bryan Singer Confirms Hugh Jackman/Wolverine Will Not Be In ‘X-Men: First Class’

The Movie God   |

There had been a rumor running around that Hugh Jackman had been spotted on the set of X-Men: First Class and that he might be in the movie in some capacity, but this has now been shot down.

Speaking to TheGeekFiles, former director and current producer Bryan Singer set the record straight, making it very clear that “He’s not in the movie, he’s in the Wolverine movies.”

For those who don’t know, the movie will tell something of an origins story. It will focus mainly on Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) when they were much younger and close friends before their differences of opinion saw them traveling separate paths.

The movie will be set in the 1960s and will feature many historical figures. Singer spoke about the timeline of the film, saying “We’ve set First Class in a time when the X-Men were conceived in the early 60s, up against political events that were happening – the early civil rights movement – and we have these kinds of events at a time when the world didn’t know mutants existed.” [...]

West Hollywood Halloween Parade Breaks World Record For Largest ‘Time Warp’

Empress Eve   |

Rocky Horror Time Warp

At Sunday night’s West Hollywood Halloween Parade, 8,239 people jumped to the left and then stepped to the right to break the Guinness World Record for largest group of people doing the Time Warp.

The Time Warp is a dance from The Rocky Horror Picture Show , which just celebrated its 35th anniversary with a new Blu-ray release, and is performed to the song of the same name.

The number of people from last night’s group of record-breakers is nearly double the amount of people in the group that held the previous record.

Check out the video here below from the event, along with some photos of the participants.

Here’s what the official certificate reads:

The largest Time Warp dance was organized by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and the City of West Hollywood at the West Hollywood Annual Halloween Carnaval on October 31, 2010 on behalf of the 35th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show Blu-ray Disc release. [...]

Blu-ray Review: The Goonies 25th Anniversary Edition

Henchman21   |

The Goonies 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray DVD

The Goonies
Blu-ray | DVD
25th Anniversary Edition
Directed by Richard Donner
Staring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman
Warner Home Video
Release date: November 2, 2010

I don’t know if it’s possible to have grown up in the 80s and not be a fan of The Goonies. It is one of the quintessential movies of the decade, at least if you’re someone who reads our site. There are few films that are still as much fun as The Goonies, and there are few films that hold such a special place the hearts of its fans. It’s been twenty-five years since the film hit theaters, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a big old Blu-ray set, and that’s just what we’re getting. So sit back, grab a Baby Ruth, and prepare to do the Truffle Shuffle, because it’s time to go looking for One-eyed Willie’s treasure one more time.

Wait, you mean I need to explain to you the plot of The Goonies? Really? Okay, if I need to explain to you the plot you clearly were born too late, and I won’t hold that against you, but that’s not an excuse to have never seen this movie. The Goonies follows a bunch of kids who are about to lose their houses to a bunch of greedy land developers, so they go in search of pirate treasure, while trying to thwart the villainous Fratellis. The plot only tells half of the story though. This is a film about friendship and what its like to be a kid, full of wonder and the hope that if you set your mind to it, anything is possible. “Goonies never die” is just as true today as it was 25 years ago, and it’s the kind of sentiment that rings true to this day [...]

Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’ Adds Two More In James Nesbitt & Adam Brown

The Movie God   |

Another pair of actors have joined the cast of Peter Jackson‘s long-awaited adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien classic, The Hobbit.

It’s been announced that popular UK star James Nesbitt has been added to the cast, coming after his name had been rumored for a stretch. Nesbitt will play an important role in the dwarf named Bofur, who is described as being “disarmingly forthright, funny and occasionally brave.” Talking about the addition of Nesbitt, Jackson gushed “James’s charm, warmth and wit are legendary as is his range as an actor in both comedic and dramatic roles. We feel very lucky to be able to welcome him as one of our cast.” Nesbitt is best known for his roles in movies and TV series like Waking Ned Devine, Cold Feet, and Danny Boyle’s Millions.

Also added to the cast is newcomer Adam Brown, who will play another Dwarf named Ori, a member of the Company of Dwarves who sets off to fight the vicious dragon, Smaug, in hopes of reclaiming Lonely Mountain. [...]

Blu-ray Review: Toy Story 3

Toy Story 3
Blu-ray/DVD Combo | DVD
Directed by Lee Unkrich
Starring Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, Michael Keaton, Ned Beatty
Walt Disney Home Entertainment
Release Date: November 2, 2010

I’m a Pixar fanatic through and through and yet I’m not in love with the Toy Story franchise. My mind often wonders how that is possible. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly appreciate the series and the first movie, in particular, for its historical significance. I also feel the current crop of 3D animated films owe their existence to Woody, Buzz, Slinky Dog, and the rest, but I’ve always found the first two entries in the series to be of a different time in Pixar’s life. I find myself much more engaged by more recent outings like Wall-E and Up than I do from older films like A Bug’s Life and Toy Story.

That being said, I think Toy Story 3 just might be my favorite film in the franchise. I don’t know if it’s just because it’s the most recent and it’s fresh in my mind, but I had a lot of fun with this third part of the trilogy. The film benefits greatly from computer technology that is a decade ahead of the previous Toy Story films and looks amazing (especially on Blu-ray). This can be found in the level of sophistication in not only the toys and humans, but in the backgrounds and environments as well. The opening dream sequence really shows off what I feel like the filmmakers have been trying to show us since the first movie but were limited by the technology of the day [...]

Geek Peek: First Look At Steven Spielberg & Peter Jackson’s ‘Adventures Of Tintin’

The Movie God   |

The first images from Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson‘s planned trilogy adaptation of The Adventures of Tintin have been released online.

The performance-capture films will begin with the Spielberg-directed The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, which is set for release on December 28, 2011. The opening film is a combination of three stories — The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn, and Red Rackham’s Treasure — follows Tintin (Jamie Bell), a young reporter who meets a man known as Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis), and the two discover a clue that might lead to a treasure belonging to Haddock’s great ancestor.

Now comes our first peek at what the movie will look like by way of Empire Magazine. It’s nothing too surprising here — the movies look like the classic Tintin with a nice performance-capture/CGI makeover, and that was exactly the idea.

Be sure to click over right now to see the two first images, and you can also click the image up top for Empire’s magazine cover. [...]

Geek Gear: New ‘LOST’ T-Shirt Available For 24 Hours

The Movie God   |

We love TeeFury here at Geeks of Doom. For those who are not familiar with the website, they make available to you brand new pop culture geek-friendly t-shirts each and every day for a nice and cheap price. The catch here, is that the shirts are available for one day, and one day only.

Many of their t-shirt designs are fantastic, and must-own if you’re a fan of all things geek, but we’re particularly fond of the shirts that are related to the hit show, LOST. Back in February, they had a “What Would John Locke Do?” shirt that I personally wear as often as possible to this day, and now a brand new design is for sale for one day only…right now.

The shirt is called “Island Reunion” and puts a funny spin on the mythos of the Lost island. Basically, all of the characters reunite to discover that everything we wondered about for six seasons was really just a big practical joke by Jacob and The Man in Black using a smoke machine, a rubber John Locke mask, and time. ‘The Walking Dead’ Premiere Draws Huge Ratings

Tom Cheredar   |

The Walking Dead on AMC

If there was any fear that Halloween night might have hurt ratings for The Walking Dead‘s opening episode, they can now be dispelled.

An estimated 5.3 million people tuned in and a cumulative viewership of 8.1 million for the 11:30pm and 1am rebroadcasts of the new AMC series — making it the highest delivery of any cable show premiere in 2010, according to the studio.

Clearly people loved what they saw and with AMC pairing the show with its Fearfest horror movie marathon, I’d be shocked if those numbers didn’t hold steady for following weeks as well.

And for those of you who are part of movie and television check-in service Miso, you may have noticed that The Walking Dead took the first and fourth highest spots on their trending programs list last night. (This is because there were two options to check in for this show.) The super viewing majority killed the number two trending program, which was game 4 of the World Series.

Check out the television ratings highlights after the jump and tell us what you thought of the episode [...]

DVD Review: Jonah Hex

Jonah Hex DVD

Jonah Hex
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by Jimmy Hayward
Staring Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich, Will Arnett
Warner Brothers Home Video
Release date: October 12, 2010

Jonah Hex is a film that deserves to be much better than it ends up being. The film is based on the western comic from DC, created in the 1970s by John Albano and Tony DeZuniga, revived in 80s and 90’s in more hybrid styles (notably post-apocalyptic western and horror western), and returned to his straight western roots in 2005 by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti. It’s the Gray and Palmiotti series that serves as the main inspiration for the movie, although there is plenty of the horror and supernatural aspects from the 90s thrown in. The film probably would have been better served by just focusing on the traditional western elements. If you’ve seen the movie, but haven’t read the comic, I highly suggest giving it a shot. Certainly don’t hold the movie against the comic.

Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) is a former confederate soldier and current bounty hunter. He is the very definition of bad ass. He makes the Man with No Name look like a fresh on the trail farm-boy. He kills without mercy, and he’s not afraid to do what ever it takes to get paid. He’s set on the track of the man who killed his family, General Turnbull (John Malkovich). The General has some plan to ruin the country’s centennial celebration, which conveniently ties into Hex’s desire for revenge. So Hex starts tracking him down. And that’s pretty much the whole plot. It’s not what you would call a complicated story […]

DVD Review: Ben 10 Alien Force, Vol. 8

Ben 10 Alien Force, Vol. 8 DVD

Ben 10 Alien Force, Vol. 8
DVD
Featuring the voices of Wil Wheaton, John Dimaggio, Yuri Lowenthal
Cartoon Network
Release Date: August 24, 2010

If I could name this volume of Ben 10: Alien Force, I would call it “The Rogue Gallery,” since the five episodes in this volume featured villains from Ben Tennyson’s past. For those not familiar with the cartoon, Ben Tennyson is no ordinary teenager. Not only is he a part of a secret intergalactic police group known as the Plumbers, but he is also the sole bearer of the Omnitrix, a device that allows him to transform into various alien beings. With Gwen, his cousin and fellow Plumber, and her love interest Kevin, they embark on adventures filled with aliens, bounty hunters, and spell casters.

I have reviewed my fair share of Ben 10 episodes and I am happy to report that these episodes are just as good as the previous. The quality of the writing and story is top notch for a kid’s program. I am always surprised by how snappy and quick the dialogue is for a kid’s cartoon, but I expect nothing less from creators of the show, the collection of comic artist and writers known as Man of Action. Along with great writing, the episodes always throw in some entertaining fight scenes, which are sure to dazzle the kids who watch the show [...]
