Want A Real Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver? It Might Just Happen

If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, you’re well aware of his handy tool, the Sonic Screwdriver.
In our recent Specialty Items Holiday Geek Gift Guide, we featured a couple of these screwdrivers…though they were only of the toy variety for fan and collector amusement. Now, there’s word that living breathing scientists out there are actually working on the technologies to create a real Sonic Screwdriver.
The screwdriver, for those who don’t know, is the ultimate tool, used mainly to fix pretty much anything and get past all types of locks, both electric and mechanical.
The hope is to develop a tool that emits incredibly powerful ultrasonic sound waves that will form something resembling a miniature tornado, allowing users to move and manipulate objects using the waves.
Bristol University’s Professor Bruce Drinkwater, who is working with The Big Bang: UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair to figure out the technology, hopes his work inspires other bright minds to work on things that once seemed impossible. [...]

Geek Gear: C-3PO Swimsuit Joins R2-D2
Because R2-D2 was lonely, apparently, here comes the C-3PO swimsuit counterpart.
I have to say, these designs are quite clever. (Check out the image here at right of both swimsuits modeled by some very attractive ladies.)
The folks over at Black Milk are selling this gem for $85 in sizes small, tiny, and non-existent. No, I kid, it’s just that after seeing those models, I’m guessing even the Large size is tiny. The swimsuit comes in sizes from XS to Large, and has stuff like UV blocking and a “cooling effect.”
Check out more details about the swimsuit here below [...]

BBC Releasing Subscription-Based Service For iPlayer On The iPad

The BBC announced that it has plans to create a subscription-based service to access content currently only available through iPlayer — an on-demand video service available for free to citizens within the UK.
This means shows like Doctor Who, Torchwood, Merlin, and many others will be available worldwide the same time it’s released in Britain.
The service will get ported over to the iPad first in a subscription-based business model, although iPlayer on mediums will likely be a combination of advertisement and paid subscription moving forward, according to the BBC.
Why only offer iPlayer on an iPad? My personal assumption is because of the proven track record that iOS has for getting its customers to pay for content. Also, since so many fans have been forced to stream or pirate BBC content that they couldn’t find available anywhere else, this offers a solid first step into making money off of something that essentially has been “free” (albeit, stolen) [...]

An Overview of ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 1 Finale

Last night the groundbreaking AMC series The Walking Dead, developed for television by acclaimed filmmaker Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist) and blockbuster producer Gale Anne Hurd (The Terminator, Aliens) and based on the Image Comics series created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard, ended its first season on a somber and occasionally revealing note that valued the further development of the show’s principal characters and the severity of their situation over gruesome zombie carnage, and it proved to be a powerful finale that raised a few questions and for me at least was only somewhat disappointing. The ratings for the finale are not in yet, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the episode pulled in even more viewers than last week’s edition, which drew 2.8 million viewers, the show’s biggest audience since the highly-hyped Halloween night premiere.

George Lucas Wants To Digitally Insert Dead Stars Into New Movies

It’s no secret to anyone that George Lucas, the man behind the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, is quite fond of computer effects and digital enhancements. But could that fondness cross a line no one ever thought it would cross?
While speaking to the UK’s Daily Mail, famed actor, writer, director, and comedian Mel Smith — closest to my own heart as the Albino from The Princess Bride — shared a little secret about Mr. Lucas: that he’s been buying up the rights to dead film stars, with hopes of one day being able to digitally insert them into new movies with today’s stars.
Smith directed Radioland Murders, which Lucas produced, but wasn’t thrilled at how it turned out. He explained before sharing this little morsel:
The film was a disaster. George doesn’t understand comedy, so the movie flopped. At least it taught me how to use CGI. George is obsessed with it and used too much in the last two Star Wars films — which I thought were ghastly. [...]

Warcraft Report: 5 Reasons To Love ‘The Shattering’ Prelude to Cataclysm
 |
Posted by Tarsonus | December 6th, 2010 at 10:54 am |

Any MMORPG fan who’s not been hiding under a rock since around last Christmas knows that World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is going live in just one day on December 7, 2010.
If you were hiding under that rock, it’s probably only been about a month for you. That’s right, while we were waiting Blizzard had been dropping down little patches laden with treats to make those “end of the expansion blues” just a little less tedious to bear with. Most recently we saw a complete overhaul to every character class in terms of talent trees, timed events that wracked an Azeroth already in the midst of small changes with a surprising amount of elemental attacks, cults preaching the end of the world, and finally, with the last sizable patch came ‘The Shattering’ of the World we all knew.
So with a whole new ‘World’ before us and absolutely zero meaningful raiding going on while we all wait for the expansion to officially drop, what would one do to pass the time?! Well, I’ve complied a list of the 5 things you are going to love about the new Azeroth, the upcoming Cataclysm expansion, and for some of you, a game you thought had grown stale and old [...]

Geek Find: ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas TARDIS Wrapping Paper

Last month, we spotlighted some very cool Doctor Who Wrapping Paper made by Merrypranxter’s, aka designer Lauren Castor, sold through her Etsy shop.
Lauren tells us that thanks to our coverage of her geeky creations (as we were the first mainstream site to feature her shop and got the ball rolling), she’s gotten in enough orders that she was able to lower her prices! So, if you had your eye on getting buying some of this wrapping paper, for the uber-geek in your life, now’s the time!
Also, she’s added a few more Christmas-themed geeky designs to her selections, including the Christmas TARDIS and Klingon Christmas. These styles are among several other Star Wars, Star Trek, and Doctor Who-themed wrapping paper and holiday cards (as well as many of her original designs).
See here at right a sample of the Doctor Who Christmas TARDIS design (which I think is my favorite!!!) [...]

Minimalist ‘Doctor Who’ Posters Capture Each Doctor’s Personality
 |
Posted by cGt2099 | December 5th, 2010 at 10:50 am |

One of the greatest aspects of Doctor Who is that even though the Doctor will always be the Doctor, each incarnation brings some unique personality aspects to the Time Lord. Part of these personality traits are also embodied in the manner of image that the Doctor portrays himself: by costume.
From the long scarf of the Tom Baker days, to the crime against fashion that was the Sixth Doctor’s outfit, to Matt Smith declaring that both bow ties and fezzes are cool, each Doctor’s costume is as much a part of the mythos of the Time Lord as the sonic screwdriver, or even the TARDIS itself.
Doctor Who fan and graphic artist Alex Freeman recognizes this. Relatively known among geek fandom online for his minimalist designs for Star Wars book covers, Freeman has now taken on the challenge of applying his minimalist art approach to each Doctor’s personality and appearance. Using simple outlines and colors, he making posters for each Doctor, and his Flickr page states they should be on sale soon – providing there’s enough interest [...]

DIY Paper ‘Star Wars’ Snowflakes

The holiday season is upon us, which means there’s lots of decorating to be done.
One of the many fun holiday activities for kids to do is to make homemade paper snowflakes. Now you can make your very own Star Wars-themed paper snowflakes!
Just follow these instructions, which include templates, to make your very own paper snowflakes: one is for Darth Vader; the other has Boba Fett and Clone Troopers. Both have the imperial logo in the center.
It’s been a while, but just might have to break out my scissors to try this one out (or get my Mom to do it, yeah, I think that’s the way to go) [...]
