Holiday Geek Gift Guide 2010: Comics

Here at Geeks of Doom, we’ve been hard at work putting together some Holiday gift ideas so that those of you who are buying for a geek have a much better idea of what we love, what we want, and what we’re downright twitching to get our hands on. If you’ve missed them, be sure to check out our DVD/Blu-ray, Video Game, and Specialty Item guides for some Christmas shopping suggestions.

Now we turn our attention to the exciting land of comic books, where many of today’s most popular movies are born.

Comic books meet you half way between books and movies — you get to read, but there’s wonderful artwork throughout, perfectly painting the story in words and drawings and colors. They’re a feast for both mind and eyes, and we’re quite passionate about them!

For the very best in comic book gift ideas, won’t you be our guest and continue reading for our Holiday Geek Gift Guide 2010: Comic Books! [...]

You Nostalgia, You Lose: Norwegian TV Advert Unites Celebrity Icons In A Blast From The Past

cGt2099   |

You Nostalgia You Lose

I have no idea how these folks managed to do this, but the people behind Norwegian television show Gylne Tider somehow gathered a whole group of celebrity icons from the Seventies through the Eighties and into the Nineties to sing/lip dub Let It Be by The Beatles. Essentially, this video below is a whole bunch of WTF mixed with a session of “Where Are They Now?” — or more accurately, a video version of the 4chan game “You Nostalgia, You Lose”.

Featured in the video are a few of our geek icons, such as Dee Snider from Twisted Sister, Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk), Roger Moore (James Bond), Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street), Mickey Rourke (Whiplash from Iron Man 2), and Dolph Lundgren (The Punisher, Masters of the Universe, Rocky IV, The Expendables).

Not only that, but the video also features people, like Alfonso Ribeiro from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, who have been subjects of numerous internet memes over the years. This could also be the last official media appearance of the brilliant Leslie Nielsen who sadly passed away recently [...]

DC’s Next Television Project To Be ‘Raven’ From The Teen Titans

cGt2099   |

Raven

DC are setting their sights on an additional television show for one of their characters, but one you might not suspect to be a potential candidate for a series: Raven from Teen Titans.

The speculation and discussion online at the moment appears to indicate that Raven is being viewed as a potential replacement for the highly successful Smallville series.

For those unfamiliar, Raven is a character from the Teen Titans team, lead by Robin when he is not bouncing around in the Batcave with Bruce Wayne. Raven is said to be half-human and half-demon, and is always portrayed as enrobed in a hooded purple cloak. She can mentally project her soul away from her body, and has a extrasensory ability to read the minds of others [...]

Geek Gear: Tron Meets Space Invaders In ‘Recognizer Invasion’ Shirt

Empress Eve   |

Recognizer Invasion

The t-shirt deal of the day over at RIPT Apparel today mashes up the TRON movies with the classic arcade game Space Invaders in “Recognizer Invasion.”

The tee, by artist HHNCARRIE, is on sale at RIPT only for today, Saturday, December 4, 2010 until tomorrow at 1AM EST.

The t-shirt is available in both men’s and women’s sizes for $10. Kids sizes are $15; Onesies are $18. You can also get the design on a Hoodie for $38 (in Men/Unisex sizes).

The black shirt design takes the set up of the game Space Invaders, but instead shooting at aliens, it’s at Recognizers, the hovering vehicles from the TRON films. The Recognizers form the letter T, while the blockades you have to shoot through here are in the form of the Tron Identity Disks. At the top, in the center for the high score is 198200, representing the year the original movie came out; the score for Player 1 is 2010, which is when Tron Legacy will be released [...]

Trailer & Making Of Videos For Telltale’s ‘Back To The Future’ Game

The Movie God   |

A few new videos have been released showing off Telltale Games’ episodic video game adaptation of the classic Back to the Future, including a new trailer.
time trying to find Doc (Christopher Lloyd), who’s stranded somewhere.

Back to the Future: The Game will be delivered in chapters and will be available via download at a yet-to-be-determined release date. The story takes place not too long after the end of Back to the Future III with Marty McFly back to doing normal every day things. But when the DeLorean shows up out of nowhere, Marty will find himself back on an adventure through time trying to find Doc (Christopher Lloyd), who’s stranded somewhere.

You can click on over to the other side now to see the videos. The first is the trailer, while the other three look at the making of the game, including what it’s about, who’s involved, and what to expect. The high point has to be A.J. LoCascio, who was cast to do the voice of Marty when Michael J. Fox wasn’t able to. This was a major concern of fans, but you’ll be excited to hear just how close LoCascio’s impression is! [...]

More ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Day News: Vashta Nerada Return In The Final Adventure Game

cGt2099   |

Doctor Who Adventure Games

If you’re a Doctor Who fan and the Christmas Special as well as the Doctor Who Proms being aired on BBC America just aren’t enough Time Lord insanity for you, then you’re in luck: the BBC has announced that the fourth and final Doctor Who Adventure Game is to be released online just after A Christmas Carol is screened on UK television.

The best part? The “monsters” in this game are the Vashta Nerada, the swarming shadows that consume flesh. Fans may remember that the Vashta Nerada first appeared in Silence In The Library and Forest of the Dead, the two episodes written by Steven Moffat that introduced the character of River Song. And while those episodes saw David Tennant‘s 10th Doctor attempt to outwit the shadow creatures, in this online game, it will be Matt Smith‘s 11th incarnation of the Doctor who’ll battle the threat, along with companion Amy Pond [...]

Must See: ‘Star Wars’ Through The Eyes Of Dr. Seuss

The Movie God   |

Over the years, many people have creating alternative ways to view the world of Star Wars. We’ve seen art and remixes and even a glance at what things might have looked like had these beloved movies been made in the Silent Film Era.

Now comes something a little bit different from cartoonist Adam Watson. While messing around with a playful doodle, Watson created an awesome fusion of Star Wars and the wild and wacky stylings of a one Dr. Seuss. With the encouragement of a friend, the cartoonist turned his doodle into a few of these delightful hybrids, and fans of both George Lucas’s space opera and Seuss’s tongue-tying tales should find much amusement in the final products.

Some of the pictures are just pictures, as the one you see above, while others mix in the words and rhymes true to Seuss and his many classics. You can see some of these by clicking over to the other side, and see more of Watson’s art by heading to his blog. [...]

Disney To Film ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ 5 & 6 Together

The Movie God   |

Ever since the fourth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, was announced, it has appeared that the Walt Disney Company had full intentions of turning it into another trilogy. However, after the shocking firing of Disney Chairman and friend of star Johnny Depp, Dick Cook, complications arose. Depp was not happy and at the time, his involvement in the franchise was up in the air.

Clearly things were sorted out enough to get Depp back for On Stranger Tides, but there was a time where it seemed any additional movies would be out of the question for the superstar.

Now comes word via HitFix that Disney still has full intentions to make Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Pirates of the Caribbean 6. The company has sent out word to all cast and crew to set aside a significant chunk of time in the near future, where the two movies will be filmed back-to-back in the same way that the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed. Marc Webb’s ‘Spider-Man’ Adds Peter Parker’s Parents, New Villain

The Movie God   |

The cast for Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures’ new Spider-Man reboot just keeps on growing and growing, but with most of the major cast spoken for, it’s time to fill in the blanks.

It’s being reported that four new actors have been cast in the movie, including Campbell Scott (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Damages), Julianne Nicholson (Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Kinsey), Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionaire, New York, I Love You), and Annie Parisse (Law & Order, National Treasure).

This particular group of castings has Spider-Man fans scratching their heads a bit, wondering if they might spell disaster or if they’re the slight twist this reboot might need. Scott and Nicholson will be playing the mother and father of Peter Parker, Richard and Mary, who are characters only mentioned a few times in comic book lore. In the comics, they were both special agents and recruited by Nick Fury, keeping them away often and their son in the care of Richard’s brother Ben and his wife, May. While investigating the third Red Skull, a hired assassin sabotaged the plane they were traveling on, though this will likely be altered for the movie. [...]

IMDb’s ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ Rating Goes To 11

Empress Eve   |

This Is Spinal Tap

Our friends over at /Film noticed something interesting about IMDb’s rating for the film This Is Spinal Tap: It goes to 11.

If you look at the entry on IMBb you’ll see that the maximum rating listed for the film is 11, though you really can only rank it between 1-10. Still, it looks damn cool, and that was quite clever.

In the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, the heavy metal group Spinal Tap has amplifiers that go up to 11, because on a standard amp if you’re all the way up on 10 and you want to go louder, where can you go from there? Nowhere. Hence, these amps go to 11.

Watch the clip here below from the film where guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) is explaining his need for volume to documentary filmmaker Marty DiBergi (director Rob Reiner) [...]

Yet Another Attempt At ‘The Three Stooges’ Movie, This Time At Fox

The Movie God   |

We’ve heard more than our fair share of updates from the planned Farrelly Brothers movie based on The Three Stooges. The movie has been on the way for what seems like an eternity, and Jim Carrey, Sean Penn, and Benicio Del Toro were all attached to star as the bumbling trio at one point.

Sadly, the movie was another of the many victims of MGM’s highly publicized financial troubles, and constant delays saw the project fall to pieces.

Now it would appear that The Three Stooges has new life with word of a brand new home. Deadline is reporting that 20th Century Fox has picked up the pieces and will now move forward with the movie, hoping to begin filming by March. This also puts them back on the trail for the next set of actors they’ll choose for the lead roles.

Here’s what Peter Farrelly had to say about this new life for his movie: [...]

DVD Review: Sherlock: Season One

Tom Cheredar   |

Sherlock Season 1

Sherlock: Season One
DVD | Blu-ray
Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Rupert Graves
BBC Warner
Release Date: November 9, 2010

With the large and pricey marketing campaign that accompanied the re-imagined Sherlock Holmes film from director Guy Richie, it’s entirely reasonable that the latest iteration of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s work went unnoticed — especially for anyone living in the U.S. I’m of course talking about the BBC television series Sherlock conceived by writer/producer Steven Moffat (Doctor Who, Coupling) and Mark Gatiss.

Unlike previous adaptations to the screen, this Sherlock is set in the modern day, which both Gatiss and Moffat explain was fairly easy to do and added a lot back to the basic premise of why the classic stories were so great to begin with. Therefore John Watson writes a blog instead of keeping a diary (though, he was still wounded while serving as a medical doctor in Afghanistan, only in the most recent war); Sherlock writes texts messages instead of letters, and street informants aren’t orphan children but members of the homeless population in London. Sherlock uses a small magnifying glass that is encased in leather and fits in his pocket rather than the large lens that’s become iconic with all sleuthing fiction [...]

Listen Now: Sampler Track Of Classic Quiet Riot Songs With New Vocalist

Empress Eve   |

Quiet Riot

Looks like Quiet Riot is back.

That’s right, you heard me, Quiet Riot, the 1980s heavy metal band famous for their cover of Slade’s “Cum On Feel The Noize,” is back on tour and with new singer Mark Huff.

Check out the band’s MySpace page to listen to a sampler of classic tunes they re-recorded with Huff on vocals. The sample track has “Cum On Feel The Noize,” “Metal Health/Bang Your Head,” and “Slick Black Cadillac,” and I have to say, it sounds damn good. Also, below, you can watch a video of Huff performing “Metal Health/Bang Your Head” with Quiet Riot at a show they played last month in Denver.

Except for a one-year break-up between 2003 and 2004, Quiet Riot has still been making albums and touring all these years up until original singer Kevin Dubrow‘s death from an accidental overdose of cocaine in 2007 [...]

Geek Gear: Even Sonic The Hedgehog Can’t Escape The Recession

The Movie God   |

There’s yet another great new t-shirt is up over at TeeFury, and this time it jumps into the realms of SEGA Genesis’s Sonic the Hedgehog.

The shirt is titled 16 Bit Recession, and tells a story of how even our favorite video game characters just aren’t able to escape the harsh financial times we all live in these days. It shows Sonic, with a few boxes packed full of the shiny golden rings he’s been collecting over the years, standing at a Cash for Gold, ready to pawn his livelihood off for whatever bit of cash he can pocket.

The shirt, as always, will run you the more-than-fair price of $9, and comes in guy’s and girl’s sizes small through extra large, with the additional XXL size available for men.

Today’s design comes from torakamikaze, and will be available for the normal 24-hour period until midnight EST tonight. After that, it will be gone forever. [...]

Blend Of Doom: Determining The Ultimate Geek Movies Of All Time

The Ultimate Geek Movies Of All Time

This week, the podcast Social Blend, which I co-host with Jay Fowler aka SilentJay74, was invaded by the Geeks of Doom! Empress Eve and Tched were considerate enough to join us in a discussion focusing on what we believe to be The Ultimate Geek Movies of All Time.

Quite frequently, you will find some blogs try to come up with some attempt at a “Top 10″ list of best movies within any given subject area, but for this special edition of Social Blend, we decided to simply discuss, debate, and squabble about (and in some cases, ridicule) the movies we collectively believe should be on every geek’s DVD shelf.

Aside from the obvious selections from the dominions of Star Wars and Star Trek, we had a look at all kinds of movies from a wide range of genres and categories — from movies based on comics, to science fiction, to music-based films, to horror and beyond [...]

Craig Ferguson’s ‘Doctor Who’ Musical Intro Leaks Online

cGt2099   |

Doctor Who

Doctor Who fans will remember last month that current Time Lord, Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor, made an appearance on the U.S. talk show The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

Those who watched the episode and interview with Matt Smith may recall that there were some vague references to a particular “musical number” that Ferguson jokingly worried that might “leak online.”

That particular musical skit is now on the web, and Ferguson tweeted it out today lightheartedly mentioning it had finally been “leaked.”

You can see the music intro they did for the show (which concludes with a special guest), as well as the full interview with Matt Smith below [...]

Blu-ray Review: Scooby-Doo 1 & 2 Collection

Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed Blu-ray DVD

Scooby-Doo 1 & 2 Collection
Blu-ray
Directed by Raja Gosnell
Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment
Release date: November 10, 2010

I have never been a big Scooby-Doo fan. I was more involved with mutant turtles and tiny toons to pay attention, but I had some passing knowledge of the popular cartoon. Next to Mickey Mouse, Scooby-Doo is pretty high up on the animated animal chart so it was only natural that his presence would be felt on the big screen. Enter Scooby-Doo and its sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, which were recently re-released on Blu-ray as a two-pack.

Scooby-Doo brings the famous Mystery Inc. detective agency together in their first live-action adventure. After a solving case involving a flying “ghost,” the Scooby gang gets into a heated argument, resulting in Fred, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby going their separate ways. Two years pass and the former Scooby gang are brought back together once more by an eccentric millionaire. It seems his amusement park, Spooky Island, is having an odd effect on his guests and he wants the top detective agency to solve the mystery. In Scooby Doo-2, the sequel picks up with Mystery Inc. right at the height of their popularity up until some of their foes from their cartoon past make their presence appear, causing all sorts of havoc on their lives [...]
