FOX’s First Friday ‘Fringe’ Episode Titled ‘Firefly’ (Get It?)

Tom Cheredar   |

FringeJ.J. Abrams has a good sense of humor despite the news that FOX has moved the Bad Robot-produced Fringe television show from Thursdays to a new Friday-night death slot.

Since the show is already rumored to be in danger of getting canceled, this kind of move could either be really good (lower expectations for ratings) or really bad depending on how many fans migrate over.

The first Fringe episode to air on its new Friday time slot is titled “Firefly” — also the name of Joss Whedon’s short-lived FOX sci-fi series that held that very same time slot.

“Yes. The people who get the joke will get the joke,” Abrams said in an interview for NY Mag. “It’s hard to celebrate a show’s move to Friday night. And yet when I look at what they’re doing … I believe it deserves an audience. And I think it will get one.”

Abrams also said he was thankful for the move since he doesn’t believe other networks would have given a show like Fringe a fighting chance in its third season.

The ‘Firefly’ episode of Fringe will air January 21, 2011 at 9PM EST on FOX. [So, don't forget to set those DVRs!]

I really hope whoever does ratings counts page views on Hulu too. That’s been the only way I’ve watched the show the past three years.

@Slipstream Judging by how those major networks are handling Hulu lately, I’m sure they are, but doubt it’ll have any real impact.

The studios haven’t figured out that they need to sell advertising to all platforms and use one solid statistic for viewership. Right now they sell ads to air on broadcast, and different ads to air via hulu/online (which doesn’t have a comparable number of viewers).

Ok so they axe ‘the good guys’ and next up is fringe? what sort of fucking retards are running this channel?

FYI, the title was changed to “The Firefly”.

Also, JJ is out of the loop. According to the Fringe producers, the episode title predates the show’s move to Friday.

Not sure about “The Good Guys” being axed.Hope not. I do hope Fringe pulls out ahead.
