New Artist Comes To ‘The Amory Wars’

MK2Fac3   |

Aaron Kuder

Children of the Fence, please welcome new artist Aaron Kuder to The Amory Wars: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3!

Evil Ink Comics, in association with Boom! Studios, recently announced through TheAmoryWars.com that Kuder comes in, hand-picked from the ongoing artist, Chris Burnham, who, as evidenced by a post by Kuder himself at Tenton Studios forum, is moving on to do more work on a Batman title, probably solidified by his awesome work from Batman & Robin #16.

I’ve been a fan of The Amory Wars since The Second Stage Turbine Blade, and the art for IKSSE:3 has been awesome, and I’ve really grown to love Burnham’s work, but fear not! I’ve done a little digging, and I don’t think fans of the series will have anything to worry about. Like I said previously stated, Chris Burnham hand-picked Aaron Kuder, and after exploring his work a little bit from his official art site, and a couple of other sites, and I absolutely love what I’ve seen [...]

Seen The New Captain America Photo? Here’s What I See

Tom Cheredar   |

Captain Super Pro

A lot of people reserve their criticism towards comic book super-hero movies on the basis of “at least they are getting made” — to which I wholeheartedly reject.

Case in point: the forthcoming Captain America film, which features a costume that looks radically different than the comic book version because it “translates” better to the big screen (Read: Take A Look: Best Shot Of Chris Evans As Captain America Yet!).

I realize this could be due in part to the time period that the film is based in (1940s) and that a modernized version could pop up when we see Captain America in The Avengers film.

But honestly, this is the first thing that came to my mind after seeing the high resolution images Marvel release yesterday (Click the image thumbnail).

For those who have no idea who “Super Pro” is, he was a football super-hero that was officially licensed by the NFL. Marvel printed at least eight issues of the series. It was one of the darker periods during the early 90s that everyone tries to forget ever happened. [...]

Watch: Claymation Ozzy Osbourne In New Lipton Iced Tea Commercial

Obi-Dan   |

The Prince Of Darkness appears as a clay puppet in a funny new commercial by Lipton Brisk Iced Tea titled “How To Be Normal.”

Ozzy Osbourne’s animated likeness shares and acts out indispensable advice such as “watch more television,” “refer to your privates as ‘naughty bits,’” and “grow a front butt.” “But,” says animated Ozzy, “why would you want to be normal?”

Lipton Brisk Iced Tea has previous commercials along the same lines. Last month they released an equally brilliant video starring a claymation Danny Trejo.

Trejo begins to tell us the plot of his movie, Machete, then takes a gulp of iced tea and acts out a summarized plot of the movie. In it, Machete Cortez hacks people open, makes love to beautiful women, and washes his hands. Watch the Machete video here.

You can see the Ozzy Osbourne video by heading below. [...]

Ricky Gervais Explains Random Disappearance During Golden Globes

The Movie God   |

The recent Golden Globes are getting a ton of attention due to the controversial (sorta…it’s not really all that bad — has anyone even seen South Park?) hosting job by comedian Ricky Gervais.

Most notably, Gervais took major shots at some questionably nominated films and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association themselves…during their own awards ceremony, nevertheless. Due to this, it was immediately said by one member of the HFPA that Gervais would not return as host, nor would his work ever be nominated. Unless they were bribed effectively enough, of course.

Apart from all of that drama, a mini-mystery arose during the program where Gervais disappeared for about an hour or so, sparking conspiracy theories that he had been fired mid-show. This was not the case, as it turns out, as Ricky explained what happened.

Click on over to read what the host had to say. [...]

Darren Aronofsky Working On A Batman Comic Book?

Tom Cheredar   |

Director Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain, Pi, Black Swan) revealed that he’s working on a Batman comic book project based on a script intended for film, according to a recent interview he did for Clothes To Film.

Aronofsky said the Batman comic hasn’t been officially announced — possibly indicating that he’s yet to approach DC Comics editorial office — and that the story is being adapted from a script that’s “difficult to make”.

Since Christopher Nolan is hard at work on the third installment of his own Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, it’s more-or-less safe to say that Aronofsky’s script is nothing more than a pet project at this point — meaning a comic book would make sense.

“We’re going to do a comic version first and see what happens,” Aronofsky said, indicating that a comic book would not necessarily dissuade him from pursuing a film version.

“It seems like if you come up with an original script, in Hollywood it’s not as effective as a comic book. It doesn’t even have to be successful as a comic; I mean how successful were Kick-Ass or Scott Pilgrim? [...]

Geek Peek: First Shadowy Image From Matthew Vaughn’s ‘X-Men: First Class’ Is Here

The Movie God   |

The first official image from 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios’ upcoming comic book movie, X-Men: First Class, has been released online.

The image is meant to show off much of the cast, with young Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and young Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) leading the charge in front of characters like (starting from the left behind Fassbender and making your way right toward McAvoy) Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne), Emma Frost (January Jones), Azazel (Jason Flemyng), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Havoc (Lucas Till), Angel Salvadore (Zoe Kravitz), and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence).

You can see the first image from director Matthew Vaughn‘s X-Men: First Class by clicking on over to the other side now!

As you can see, unfortunately, the image is very dark and they’re clearly trying to keep things still relatively mysterious. The image first showed up on MSN and has since been yanked down, so it’s unclear whether it was leaked early or if Fox just doesn’t like the look or what. Even so, it’s making the rounds, so here it is! [...]

TV Review: Bob’s Burgers Episode 1

Henchman21   |

Bobs Burgers

Bob’s Burgers
Created by: Loren Bouchard
Starring: H. Jon Benjamin, John Roberts, Kristen Schaal
Fox
Sunday 8:30/7:30c

Fox has long relied on animated shows to fill their Sunday night line-up, and apparently Seth MacFarlane can’t be the only source for them, so the network has turned to Loren Bouchard (Home Movies, Dr. Katz) to come up with a new creation. What he has given us is Bob’s Burgers, a slice of life comedy is more King of the Hill than it is Family Guy, but are audiences interested in this style of comedy? Hopefully so, because it’s a show that has a lot of humor, at least judging from the first episode.

Bob’s Burgers centers on Bob Belcher (H. Jon Benjamin) and his family as they try to operate a burger joint and keep it afloat. The first episode deals with Bob having to juggle his restaurant’s re-re-re-opening, a health inspector that wants to ruin his business, and his wedding anniversary. The humor comes from some wild situations (the store being closed due to allegations the burgers are made of people) but it also stems from the relationships between the characters. [...]

Redbox Sales Decline In Fourth Quarter As Netflix Rises

Tom Cheredar   |

Redbox Kiosk

Redbox, the company that operates DVD rental vending machine across the US, reported a decline in sales, according to the fourth quarter financial report by it’s parent company Coinstar (CSTR).

The company cited several reasons for the lower sales numbers, with the most prominently discussed reason being the new stipulation from movie studios to delay Redbox rentals of new DVDs until 28 days after they’ve been released. Essentially, this means when a new movie gets released to DVD, you can buy it through retail stores, but you cannot rent it for almost a month.

Also mentioned in the financial report as reasons people weren’t renting as many movies from Redbox, was because the movies they wanted were unavailable due to people returning popular DVDs to a different kiosks than they originally got the movie from.

The only thing that was missing from the report was the looming competition from streaming media, which has no doubt taken a huge bite out of their customer base. [...]

New ‘True Blood’ Season 4 Promo Video Teases The Arrival Of The Witch

The Movie God   |

The fourth season of HBO’s hit series, True Blood, is currently being filmed while fans wait impatiently for the show’s return.

Sadly, no trailer for the upcoming season have hit the ‘net yet, but HBO has released a brief new promo that will make all of you fans of the ways of the witch very, very happy.

Being unfamiliar with the books that True Blood is based on, The Southern Vampire Mysteries, I personally how no clue how much witches play into the storylines. That said, considering where things have gone in the first few seasons, I can only assume they’d fit right in at the party.

Music Review: Pearl Jam – Live On Ten Legs

Obi-Dan   |

Pearl Jam
Live On Ten Legs
Monkeywrench
Released January 17 (UK) January 18
(U.S.: CD | MP3) 2011

I hate Pearl Jam. I’ve spent many hours on my guitar trying to sound as good as Stone Gossard and Mike McCready. I gave up a long time ago trying to play the bass like Jeff Ament and I have as much chance of being a better drummer than Matt Cameron as I have of finding a voice like Eddie Vedder in my armpit. I find them sickeningly good and I can barely stand it.

Of course, I am joking about my ‘hatred’: I adore Pearl Jam. This year Pearl Jam has lined up a list of surprises to coincide with the 20th anniversary of its debut album, Ten. To kick things off comes the release of new live album, Live On Ten Legs. Recorded at various concerts during 2003-2010 and at 18 tracks long it’s a good collection of Pearl Jam songs with at least one track from all of its back catalogue (with the exception of No Code) […]

‘Paranormal Activity’ Gets A Japanese Sequel With ‘Tokyo Night’

Empress Eve   |

Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night

Icon Home Entertainment has announced the upcoming DVD release of Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night, the officially sanctioned Japanese sequel to 2009’s docu-horror Paranormal Activity.

This direct-to-DVD sequel to Oren Peli’s horror hit will be released in the UK on March 7, 2011.

Typically, its been U.S. filmmakers who adapt Japanese horror films for American audiences, like what was done with The Ring and The Grudge, but for Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night, Japanese director Toshikazu Nagae has done the reverse, with input from the original U.S. producers.

And this time, there’s TWO bedrooms and apparently, twice the fear!

See below for the official synopsis, as well as a still from the movie [...]

Empress Eve   |

Ackbar - Ghostbusters

The $9 t-shirt deal of the day over at Teefury today is a mash-up of Star Wars and Ghostbusters in the “It’s A Trap” shirt, by artist comicbookjer.

The sale at Teefury began at midnight EST (Tuesday, January 18, 2011) and will continue for 24 hours from then, and once it’s over, it’s gone from the site for good.

Blu-ray Review: Buried

Buried
Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo
DIRECTED BY: Rodrigo Cortés
WRITTEN BY: Chris Sparling
STARRING: Ryan Reynolds, Samantha Mathis, José Luis García Pérez, Robert Paterson, Stephen Tobolowsky
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
RELEASE DATE: January 18, 2011

What would you do if you awoke to total blackness, barely able to move or breathe, and completely unaware of your location? What would you do if you soon realized that you’re not only unaware of your location, but that you’re actually in a wooden coffin, buried within the earth, set to ponder your horrific fate until the moment the last bit of life drifts away from your tormented body?

If you’re anything like me, you’d likely slip into an uncontrollable panic wishing only that death would come as quickly as humanly possible. But for Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds), who finds himself in this very position in director Rodrigo Cortés‘s new thriller, Buried, giving up is not an option…at first.

Paul is an American truck driver, who was working a contract job in Iraq delivering supplies to community centers and the like. But as he recalls soon after regaining consciousness, the convoy of trucks he was traveling with was attacked, first by children throwing rocks and then by much more deadly men with guns, who shoot most of the other drivers. Get Marvel’s ‘Heroes For Hire’ #1 For Free

Culturesmash   |

Heroes for Hire #1

Marvel has announced that Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s Heroes For Hire #1 will be reprinted in full and at no additional cost within Avengers #10, on sale February 23, 2011. This series features an eclectic mix of heroes including Moon Knight, Ghost Rider, and Iron Fist. If you aren’t an Avengers fan, a reprinting of the first issue will hit store shelves a week earlier with a variant cover.

“We want to give our fans the most Marvel value for their comic buying dollar in 2011,” said Senior Vice President of Sales, David Gabriel. “Adding the first issue of Heroes for Hire to one of our top titles, for free, is the best opportunity for fans and retailers to spread the word about a book that we just can’t seem to keep in stores for people to try.”

If you are an Avengers fan, this is a great way to check out Heroes for Hire or if you’ve been interested in both books but haven’t given them a try, then this is a buy one get one free sort of situation. Otherwise, this is just another second printing of one of Marvel’s books [...]

Starz Chooses Its Andy Whitfield Replacement For ‘Spartacus: Blood And Sand’ — Introducing Liam McIntyre

The Movie God   |

After the long and difficult process of trying to figure out who should replace Andy Whitfield on the hit Starz original series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, the actor who will step into the title role has officially been chosen, and his name is Liam McIntyre.

Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after the resoundingly popular first season, and their sophomore run was put on hold. At a time it seemed Whitfield was about to make a full recovery, but sadly he had a setback and the show was delayed again, forcing Starz to consider either recasting Whitfield’s role or possibly even canceling the show all together.

Many of you commented on the looming decision and ultimately confirmed choice to recast, and most, while not at all that comfortable with replacing Whitfield, seemed to want the show to go on one way or another.

With the news that McIntyre has been chosen, I think all of you fans can breathe a subtle sigh of relief. [...]

Ricky Gervais Banished From All Things Golden Globes, Including Future Nominations?

The Movie God   |

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is at it again, folks.

Just one night after putting on yet another mediocre-yet-entertaining ceremony, it sounds like the organization behind the awards has minimal sense of humor, and wants to punish the best part about their show of the last two years: the host.

Last year, Ricky Gervais made his hosting debut at the Golden Globe Awards, and pushed so many buttons that many (myself included) thought that they would never bring him back. Shockingly, they quickly announced that Gervais would be back again, showing that they’re okay with some comic jabs. Of course Gervais would have to up the ante this year, and that he did…but apparently he crossed the “line.”

Click on over for a quote from a Hollywood Foreign Press member, and to see a video of the Gervais opening monologue that has celebrities and suits so very bitter this fine day. [...]

Top Cow Brings Noir Goodness With ‘Netherworld’

Culturesmash   |

Netherworld

Top Cow is adding a new miniseries to its roster of offbeat stories starting April 13, 2011 with Netherworld, from writers Bryan Edward Hill and Rob Levin, as well as illustrator Tony Shasteen and colorist JD Mettler.

Netherworld tells the story of one long night in a city following private detective Ray Parker as he searches for an 18-year-old girl named Madeline. The story promises to be dark and feature deep, layered characters. The city itself is seedy and full of criminals, and other unsavory types. If there’s good in this city we aren’t likely to see much of it along Parker’s path.

The writers take great inspiration from Frank Miller’s Sin City. While that world was the inspiration for the writers, Shasteen believes only Miller could create that particular city. He instead goes for something much more realistic and akin to films such as Se7en and Blade Runner. Shasteen’s references to Blade Runner meld well with his ideas for creating a city that is both familiar and foreign. He used images of densely populated Asian cities to help him craft the unique look of Netherworld. Shasteen also looked to Hollywood when designing the characters. Parker for example is based on a mix of Russell Crowe and Clive Owen while Avril Lavigne and Blake Lively inspire Madeline [...]
