Forget The ‘RoboCop’ Statue, Try #Robocharity

As you might have already read on this website, a viral Internet movement is underway to provide the citizens of Detroit a RoboCop statue [read Fans Decide Detroit Needs A RoboCop Statue Despite Government Rejection]. What started off as a joke suggestion from a New England man on Twitter has turned into a donation drive to bring an actual statue of the sci-fi hero to the city. The drive has been so successful, the required $50,000 cost has already been raised in less than 10 days. While this grassroots campaign is nothing short of amazing, I can’t but feel like this is leaving a sour taste in my mouth.
Face it, there are a million reasons why Detroit’s Mayor David Bing rejected this idea of creating a RoboCop statue. The most important reason? Because it is stupid. Why spend the city’s dollars on creating a statue to a fictitious crime fighting robot? What will that do for the declining city and its disenfranchised population? Some parts of Michigan don’t even have enough money to run a local paper and yet somehow, $50,000 was raised to put up a statue of RoboCop? I am as much of a fan of RoboCop as the next guy, but there isn’t a reason out there that can explain why a statue is needed [...]

Attention Browncoats: ‘Firefly’ To Return To Cable; Is This Our Last Chance To Save It?

As the years have flown by, more and more people have come to realize just how good Joss Whedon‘s prematurely canceled sci-fi/western, Firefly, really was. The faithful fanbase has become an army who have supported and fought for the revival of the show without rest, but with the ever-growing fear that their efforts were futile.
Yes, it is true that a lot of time has passed since the show’s cancellation and the dying breath that was the feature film follow-up, Serenity. Yes, it is true that hope dwindles away more and more with every passing day. But all is not lost…not yet!
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Firefly is returning to basic cable for the first time since 2008. The Science Channel has acquired the rights to the one and only season of the show, and will air them complete with some brand new extras to sweeten the pot and get people to watch. What kind of extras, you ask? Well, rock star physicist and host of the Science Channel’s Sci-Fi Science, Dr. Michio Kaku, will wrap up each episode by discussing the “theoretical science behind the show’s sci-fi concepts.” Yes, this insanely cool. [...]

Must Watch: Haunting Trailer For Zombie Video Game ‘Dead Island’ Will Leave You Speechless

A new video game trailer has hit the web, and it has a lot of people buzzing.
The trailer is for a game called Dead Island, and it’s about zombies. It’s developed by Techland, the team behind two personal favorites of mine: Call of Juarez and Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. The game has been in development for multiple years now, but with the release of this new trailer, Dead Island is officially on the radars of gamers everywhere.
Every once in a while a trailer really stands out for one reason or another, and this is one of those times. It’s a cinematic, so no actual gameplay is shown, but it’s presented in an almost Memento-esque short story format. It also hits an extremely dark point that very few others would have the nerves to showcase, and it’s this point that is all but guaranteed to strike an emotional chord with you the viewer.
You can see the new cinematic trailer for Dead Island by heading below now. You can also find a few new screenshots from the game as well. [...]

Fans Decide Detroit Needs A RoboCop Statue Despite Government Rejection

It started as something of a joke. A New England man suggested to Detroit Mayor Dave Bing that they should build a statue in honor of RoboCop, the science fiction classic that was set in the city, in an attempt to improve the city’s image (and likely bring in a fair share of movie-loving tourists). Bing rejected the suggestion because, well…it’d be a little odd for a mayor to OK a statue of cyborg crime fighter.
Rejection be damned, fans of RoboCop everywhere started to call for the statue to be built anyway, and a movement began to raise the funds necessary. While some still think it would be wrong to have a figure associated with such a violent franchise displayed publicly, donations started pouring in, including one weighing in at $25,000 — half of the $50,000 goal that was set.
For those who still want to donate it’s not too late; while their goal has been reached, the plan now is to raise as much as possible to make the RoboCop statue as big and as awesome as can be achieved. [...]

Ah, family. That’s what it’s all about, right? Spending time with the ones that you love as often as possible; sharing life and memories and laughter with them in the short time we’re on this beautiful big rock.
OK, so that’s what it’s about for a lot of people — it’s not so true for others. Like the Meyerowitz family, for example. Every single year they gather on their father’s birthday to celebrate the man that made them who they are today. Unfortunately, on this particular birthday gathering, one of them has the others not so happy and emotions are running high and hot.
Peep World is a movie about one person’s success at the expense of their own family. Nathan Meyerowitz (Ben Schwartz), an author whose book has gone on to massive popularity, skyrocketing him to the top of the world, is living the good life. The only problem is that his book is a tell-all, and it does not shine a positive light on his mother, father, two brothers, and sister. [...]

‘Astonishing X-Men’ Come Home!

Since it started The Astonishing X-Men has existed in a bubble, in its own continuity, and its own universe. Starting in April two new creative teams are working together for a new approach to this series that will break the X-Men up into two separate teams that are each on seemingly separate missions set in the standard Marvel X Universe. Rotating teams of creators Daniel Way and Christos Gage, and Jason Pearson with Juan Bubillo will tell the two stories. This new story arc also promises the introduction of a new character who will be extremely important in the X Universe by the end of 2011.
It all begins in Astonishing X-Men #37 where Wolverine, Cyclops, Emma Frost, and Armor do battle with giant monsters that are stomping their way through downtown Tokyo. Fing Fang Foom attacks and sends the X-Men into action minus Armor who is dealing with some personal issue. Christos Gage and Juan Bubillo step in for issue #38 where their team of Colossus, Beast, and Kitty Pryde fight off a Brood invasion. This story also features the return of Kitty Pryde’s old pet Lockheed and Agent Brand from S.W.O.R.D. [...]

Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter To Join Johnny Depp In Tim Burton’s ‘Dark Shadows’

Whenever Tim Burton makes a movie, most expect Johnny Depp to be somehow involved. This is once again the case in Dark Shadows, the upcoming movie adaptation of the ’60s TV series where Depp is set to play the lead, Barnabas Collins.
The rest of the cast assembled so far is impressive, including Jackie Earle Haley, Eva Green, and Bella Heathcote, and it looks like it’s about to get even better than that soon. It’s being reported that Michelle Pfeiffer is in talks to take on the role of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, a powerful woman who has kept herself buried away in her mansion for ten years since the disappearance of her husband. This would of course reunite Pfeiffer with Burton after she played Catwoman for him in 1992′s Batman Returns.
Another staple to a Tim Burton production the director’s wife, Helena Bonham Carter. The currently Oscar nominated actress for her work in The King’s Speech isn’t officially a member of the Dark Shadows cast yet, but sources are saying that she’s already prepped and ready to take on the role of Dr. Julia Hoffman. Gerard Butler Confirmed For ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2′

Back in October, DreamWorks Animation announced their intentions to produce a sequel to their hit animated title, How to Train Your Dragon. At that time, it was also revealed that the entire cast of the original movie — including Jay Baruchel, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, and Kristen Wiig — would be returning for How to Train Your Dragon 2 as well…except for one.
At that time it was unclear whether the biggest star on their roster, Gerard Butler, would be back or not. Now comes word that Mr. Butler has worked all of the dirty details out, and will indeed be back to voice the role of Stoick, the strong warrior father of Hiccup (Baruchel).
Speaking to Empire Magazine recently, Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the first film with Chris Sanders but will be writing and directing the sequel alone, confirmed that the entire cast would be returning, and that just a week prior he heard confirmation that the one final piece, Butler, was locked in officially. Danzig Recording A Covers Album
 |
Posted by cGt2099 | February 15th, 2011 at 11:05 am |
Glenn Danzig has announced that he is in the studio and currently recording a covers album. Fans of Danzig will know this project is one the artist has been talking about for some time, and five songs have already been recorded for the album. While Danzig hasn’t released full details yet, it’s understood that among the song selections will be tributes to Black Sabbath and Elvis Presley.
While the Sabbath and Elvis selections, I believe, are somewhat “predictable” choices for Danzig (I imagine he’ll probably throw a song by The Doors in there somewhere too), I would like to think he will choose some tracks that might be a surprise for his fans. I could imagine him doing an interesting interpretation of Nick Cave‘s “Red Right Hand” or a classic rock song like “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals.
This is all just speculation on my part of course, but as a fan I’d like to see Danzig tackle some covers that are a little more unpredictable. Either way, it will be interesting to see what Glenn comes up with for this project…
