Take Your Excitement For Rockstar’s ‘L.A. Noire’ To The Next Level With New Gameplay Trailer

The Movie God   |

We’ve seen a trailer and impressive first images from Rockstar Games’ upcoming title, L.A. Noire. We’ve also seen a video showing off the astounding technologies behind the game, which create shockingly accurate facial expressions and lip-to-word synchronization.

All of these previews of the game have been created using in-game content, but what we had not yet seen was true gameplay — what it will actually look like when we get this bad boy in our hands and begin our adventure in 1940s post-World War II Los Angeles.

Rockstar has now release just that and as you might expect, it looks pretty incredible. As you’ll see, it does look like a Grand Theft Auto-style game, but mixed with these awe-inspiring new performance capture effects and the added crime-solving elements that require you to interrogate suspects, read their expressions, and find evidence, L.A. Noire is no doubt going to be a top contender for game of the year.

You can see the new gameplay trailer by clicking over to the other side now! [...]

Movie Review: Cold Weather

Three-D   |

Cold

Cold Weather
Directed by Aaron Katz
Starring: Chris Lankenau, Trieste Kelly Dunn, Raul Castillo, Robyn Rikoon

Release date: February 4, 2011 (limited)

The title of Aaron Katz’s third feature film, Cold Weather, should not be misinterpreted as being a film about unique snowflakes, blizzards, or sub-zero temperatures, though the film’s setting in Portland does show consistent rainfall and gloomy days, evoking a distant sense of coldness and poignant beauty. It is, after all, traditional Portland weather. But Katz embraces a perspective that showcases his keen eye for finding resemblance in opposite entities. His direction here allows him to intertwine weather and humanity, making them coincide respectively. He draws comparisons from the naturalistic environment he is working in with those emotions that are running rampant within his characters. As Cold Weather is inclined to drain the life out of all plants and make living beings think twice about being out in it, Katz perceives this harsh coldness dwelling within individuals, rendering them emotionally numb and dislocated from the world they inhabit.

There is no doubt that the characters in Cold Weather desire to have their numbness relieved. They are desperately searching for any form of encouragement that has the potential of elevating them out of their current state of uneasiness. In the film’s wonderful opening credits the camera is fixated on a windowpane abundantly covered by raindrops. Slowly do the hundreds of drops cry down the window, slowly dripping away into oblivion. They are fragments looking to be engaged, for no matter how short a period of time, with other drops that would allow them to connect. An engagement is what these drops want [...]

FREE Listen: Motorhead’s ‘The World Is Yours’

Empress Eve   |

Motorhead

Our friend Mark Carras over at Rock My Monkey pointed out that the new Motörhead album, The World Is Yours, is streaming online for FREE right now at AOL Music.

Seriously, give it a listen — it’s FREE, and it’s the entire album, which was released in the U.S. on February 8, 2011. I’m not familiar with AOL’s CD listening parties, so I’d recommend checking this out right away, since I’m not sure how long it will be streaming for free.

The new album is awesome. When I listened to The World Is Yours, I felt like I did back in 1987 when I first heard Rock-N-Roll… it’s sooooo good [...]

Behold! ‘X-Men: First Class’ Gets A Great First Trailer

The Movie God   |

The first trailer for director Matthew Vaughn‘s comic book adaptation, X-Men: First Class was released online today, and it’s ready and waiting for you to take a peek and share your thoughts below. It’s unclear how good the movie will be, but this should make up for any images that might not have been received too highly.

The movie is set in the ’60s and is produced by Bryan Singer, who directed X-Men and X2: X-Men United before handing off the reigns to Brett Ratner for X-Men: The Last Stand. It’s adapted from the comic book series of the same name and stars (Michael Fassbender) as Magneto, (James McAvoy) as Professor Xavier, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, January Jones as Emma Frost , Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, Jason Flemyng as Azazel , Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Lucas Till as Havoc, Zoe Kravitz as Angel Salvadore , and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique.

Author Charlaine Harris Sees An End For The ‘True Blood’ Books

Empress Eve   |

Dead Reckoning

With the 11th Southern Vampire Mysteries book, Dead Reckoning, arriving this May, author Charlaine Harris is starting to think about putting an end to the series, which spawned the popular HBO television series True Blood.

In a recent interview with Hero Complex, Harris confessed that the property has taken over her life and that she’ll probably only do two more books in the series, which is also referred to as the Sookie Stackhouse or True Blood series.

“Truthfully, the next two books will probably be the last two books in the series,” Harris said last week. “I still love Sookie, but I’m beginning to want to write something else, and Sookie’s kind of taken over my life. I was able to write other things for the first few years I was involved in Sookie, but then after the start of the television show she took over so much of my time because of my increased publicity obligations that it’s been very hard to write other things, and I really need to do that.” […]

‘Twilight Saga’ Writer Melissa Rosenberg To Pen ‘Highlander’ Remake

The Movie God   |

A new writer is set to take on Summit Entertainment’s remake of the 1986 fantasy favorite, Highlander, which tells the story of a group of immortals who can only kill each other via decapitation, and acquire their foe’s powers whenever they take their life.

The studio has entered into negotiations with Melissa Rosenberg to craft the latest draft of the script, which has seen a few writers work on it already. Rosenberg is best known for her work on The Twilight Saga, where she penned the scripts for Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and both parts of Breaking Dawn.

This may make Highlander fans uneasy and worried about a remake they likely don’t even want to see to begin with, but fear not. While the Twilight franchise is a painful blemish on cinematic history, Rosenberg has some much better credits to her name, namely the eleven episodes of Dexter that she has written.

The first attempt at the script was handled by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, followed by another draft by Cormac Wibberley and Marianne Sellek Wibberley. [...]

Activision Kills Off ‘Guitar Hero’ Franchise, ‘DJ Hero’ & ‘True Crime’

The Movie God   |

A couple of significant bombs were dropped earlier today during Activision’s quarterly financial conference, where reports swirled that massive layoffs at multiple divisions were handed out and that some of the company’s bigger titles were being ended.

As popularity in the music video games genre has slowly diminished, the studio has decided to shut down two of their popular titles including DJ Hero and the juggernaut that once was Guitar Hero, which had a new installment planned for 2011. At the moment Rock Band is the top title in said genre, so it only made sense for Activision to pull the plug and move on. And if the decline in popularity continues, the same fate is likely not too far off for Rock Band as well.

In addition to this, it was announced that the development of True Crime: Hong Kong has been scrapped as well, killing off what was supposed to be a reboot of the franchise. [...]

Julia Roberts Cast As Evil Queen In New ‘Snow White’

The Movie God   |

And here we are again!

Upcoming films based on the tale of Snow White are all moving their pieces into place in an attempt to keep up with their competitors. We’ve heard about Universal Pictures’ Snow White and the Huntsman lining up stars such as Charlize Theron, Viggo Mortensen, and Kristen Stewart for potential roles. Then came word that Disney, who’s coming back with another take on the story they used for the 1937 animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs titled Snow and the Seven, had hired the writer of Toy Story 3 to pen their script.

Being sure to keep pace with the others, Relativity Media’s adaptation of the tale, titled The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, has acquired the services of a big name talent. In a press release sent out by the studio, they’ve announced that Julia Roberts has joined their film, and she will be playing their Evil Queen character. [...]

Quirk 2010 Mix Tape

At the end of 2010, a nifty little item arrived from Quirk Books, the publisher of such titles as Dracula’s Heir, Night of the Living Trekkies, The Encyclopedia Shatnerica, and of course, their most popular offering, the zombie/classic lit mash-up Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: a Mix Tape!

The image above was on the cover of the cassette case (click image to see the full view, including the actual tape), and inside was what looked like a cassette tape, but upon further inspection, I saw that it was actually a USB flash drive. A message inside explained that because the good folks at Quirk Books love me soooooo much, they put together a mix of songs as a thank you [...]

Along with the info comes the illustrations, which are awesome (it’s got that Hanna-Barbera feel to it).

The image above is a snippet from the infographic, so click it to see a larger, full view, and be sure to visit Bob Canada’s Blogworld site to see the highly readable super-sized [and printable, I'd say] version of it, and to read the artist’s thoughts on this project [...]

Geek Gear: Star Trek ‘Original Space Drunk’ Shirt

Empress Eve   |

Captain Kirk shirt

The t-shirt deal of the day over at RIPT Apparel is a Star Trek-inspired shirt called “Original Space Drunk.”

The tee, by artist D4N13L, went on sale at RIPT today, Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at midnight CST, and will continue for 24 hours from then, and once it’s over, it will not be sold on the site anymore.

The design is a parody of the Captain Morgan rum label, replacing the swashbuckling rum mascot with Star Trek‘s Captain Kirk, who here has his foot up on a downed Red Shirt with the Enterprise starship in the background. Original Spiced Gold becomes Original Space Drunk, and the text underneath tells us all about how Captain Kirk is “boldly going anywhere, banging anything, and getting red shirts killed in the process” (which is pretty spot on) [...]

Celebrate Jules Verne’s Birthday With Google’s Interactive Doodle

Empress Eve   |

Jules Verne - Google

I know this is coming late in the day, but I couldn’t let this occasion pass without mentioning it: Today marks what would be Jules Verne‘s 183rd birthday.

As with many special occasions, Google has created one of their popular doodles in celebration, this one being an interactive nautical theme referencing the author’s popular novel, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea

There’s a lever on the right side of the logo that allows you to control the doodle submarine, but what I didn’t realize is that, according to The Telegraph, if you view it on an iPad or iPhone, you can tilt the device to have the water level move in any direction you want! [...]
