Book Review: Married With Zombies

The Book Slave   |

Married with Zombies

Married With Zombies
Book 1: Living with the Dead
By Jesse Petersen
Paperback
Orbit Books
Release date: September 2010

Married With Zombies is the first book in Jesse Petersen’s three-book series entitled Living with the Dead in which we follow a twenty-something year old married couple, Sarah and David, as they work through their ample relationship issues while they slay their way across the U.S.A. in the hopes of finding loved ones alive and not undead during the sudden zombie apocalypse. Told with sarcasm and frustrated humor from Sarah’s point of view, Petersen paints a realistic portrait of marriage in the age of handheld video games and the wives who compete with them for their husbands’ attention. The zombies are almost beside the point right away as I wondered whether these two would kill each other first [...]

Interview: ‘Tangled’ Directors Talk About Creating Disney’s 50th Animated Feature

Culturesmash   |

TANGLED

Tangled is what many of us thought would be one of Disney’s smaller films, almost a direct-to-DVD movie that found itself in theaters, yet something about the animated feature put butts in seats. Globally, Tangled brought in over $350 million. When you actually take time to watch the film, you’ll see it tells a great, if traditional, Disney story with solid performances from the lead voice actors Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi. Geeks of Doom recently took part in a roundtable discussion with Tangled‘s directors, Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, to talk about film, which arrives on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD this Tuesday, and the duo shared some great nuggets of information from behind the scenes of the making of the movie.

Tangled was originally simply titled Rapunzel. Early on the film’s titled was changed to the much more modern Tangled. Byron Howard commented, “When Nathan and I figured out that this film was really about two characters, Flynn and Rapunzel, we knew that changing the title would be a good idea. We like that Tangled as a title sounds smart and intriguing, while also relating to the tangle of plot, characters and emotion in the film.” One of the best things that Tangled does is tell a classic Disney animated film story, but with a modern more approach to the style and characters. There’s edginess to Rapunzel’s mother that is hilarious and clever all the way down to her Oscar-nominated song [...]

Amy Adams To Play Lois Lane Alongside Henry Cavill In Zack Snyder’s ‘Superman’

The Movie God   |

The cast for Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, and the recently released Sucker Punch director Zack Snyder‘s reboot of Superman for Warner Brothers has been coming together quite nicely.

The movie, which is said to be called The Man of Steel, first cast Tudors star Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, and has since brought in Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent. Now Clark has his Lois Lane with the announcement that Academy Award nominee Amy Adams has been cast in the role.

Talking with the LA Times, Snyder said:

There was a big, giant search for Lois. For us it was a big thing and obviously a really important role. We did a lot of auditioning but we had this meeting with Amy Adams and after that I just felt she was perfect for it.

It goes back to what I’ve said about Superman and making him really understandable for today. [...]

DVD Review: Batman: The Brave and The Bold Season One Part Two

Batman: The Brave and The Bold

Batman: The Brave and The Bold
Season One, Part Two
DVD
Starring: Diedrich Bader, John DiMaggio, Will Friedle, James Arnold Taylor
Warner Home Video
Released date: March 15, 2011

Finally, the second part of Batman: The Brave and The Bold Season One has hit store shelves, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Previously, I mentioned how much I love this show, but my love for the show didn’t really develop until the second half of season one. This is really when the show came on my radar, so I’m excited to finally get my hands on this DVD.

This DVD set features some incredibly awesome team ups and voice acting that will make any geek’s heart beat just a little faster. Some of the dream teams that we see are Batman teamed up with Etrigan The Demon, and Sherlock Holmes in “Trials of the Demon!”, Batman and a depressed Aquaman in “Mystery in Space!”, and an AWESOME team up featuring Bat-Mite in “Legends of the Dark Mite!”, which is just as crazy as it sounds. Also, in this season we have the legendary appearance of Neil Patrick Harris in the musical episode, “Mayhem of the Music Meister!”, which is just as awesome as it sounds [...]

Watch Now: Prequel Teaser Video For ‘Doctor Who’ Series 6!

cGt2099   |

Doctor Who

The BBC has just released a prequel video to The Impossible Astronaut, the first episode of Doctor Who Series 6. Kicking off the new series on April 23, The Impossible Astronaut is the first chapter in a two-part adventure set in the United States. In the lead up to the premiere, show runner Steven Moffat has released a short prequel teaser to give fans a taste of what we can expect. You can see the video at the bottom of this post.

The first two episodes of Doctor Who Series 6 (or Season 32 if you’re a classic fan!) feature the return of Matt Smith and his portrayal of the Eleventh Doctor. Reprising their roles as his companions are the married couple Amy Pond and Rory Williams, played by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill respectively. The enigmatic River Song also appears in these two episodes, played by Alex Kingston, who will be featuring prominently in this series and — according to Moffat — her mysteries and relation to the Doctor will be revealed during the course of the season as well [...]

Remembering Rock Drummer Randy Castillo

Obi-Dan   |

Rock drummers are a notorious breed. They are constantly the butt of many jokes, which many have come to deserve. But there are a few who sidestep the stereotype, playing on some of the greatest songs and albums in rock history, who deserve their well-earned level of respect. Fewer still deserve as much respect as Randy Castillo.

Born Randolpho Francisco Castillo on December 18, 1950 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Castillo first came to prominence when he performed on the Lita Ford album Dancin’ On The Edge.

Castillo was best known as the drummer for Ozzy Osbourne’s band from the mid-1980s to the early-1990s. He played on The Ultimate Sin in 1986, which was the final album to feature guitarist Jake E. Lee. He also played on the first two Ozzy albums which included Lee’s successor, the young Zakk Wylde: No Rest For The Wicked and No More Tears, as well as the two live albums Just Say Ozzy (which also featured Ozzy’s ex-Black Sabbath bandmate, bass player Geezer Butler) and Live and Loud.

He would later go on to replace Tommy Lee for the Mötley Crüe album New Tattoo. Sadly, in more ways than one, this would prove to be Castillo’s final album recording [...]

DVD Review: The Venture Brothers: Season 4 Vol 2

The Venture Brothers: Season 4 Vol 2

    The Venture Brothers
    Blu-ray | DVD
Created by Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer
    Starring James Urbaniak, Patrick Warburton
    Warner Bros Home Video
    Release date: March 22, 2011

It’s time once again for another review of a Venture Brothers DVD set, this time with Season 4, Volume 2. I’ve gone on before about my love for this show, but I think this time I’m going to say exactly why I love this show so much. If you’re looking to see whether you should buy this DVD or not, yes, you should buy it. There are 8 great episodes on here that are well worth the money. If you’ve got a Blu-ray player, then definitely pick up the complete Season 4 Blu-ray, also on sale March 22, 2011. It’s very easy for me to recommend this show to anyone who likes comic books, action, old cartoons, new cartoons, and anything that makes you laugh.

I grew up watching Johnny Quest, and the whole show started as a parody of that show. The premise for Venture Bros. is essentially “What if Johnny Quest really existed, grew up, and turned out to be a failure in life.” It’s this central premise that drew me in at first, but it is the expansion of that premise that has kept me watching [...]

Syfy Channel & ‘Rift’ Creator Trion Team Up To Create TV Series/MMO Video Game Fusion

    The Movie God   |

Every once in a while a project so dauntless and ambitious that you almost have to cringe at what might happen if it all falls apart comes along, but with these projects also comes a pure excitement at the thought of them working. NBC Universal’s Syfy Channel and Trion Worlds have just such a project in the making, and if it works like they want it to work, it could quite literally change the world of entertainment forever and ever.

Here’s the basic idea: Trion, who’s latest title, Rift, has many saying that MMORPGs that aren’t World of Warcraft can be made and enjoyed, have entered into a partnership to create a brand new currently untitled TV series AND online video game — currently being called a Syfy Action MMO — that live and breathe as one entity. Confusing, right?

Be sure to continue on below to read much more and see a video about the tricky concept behind this. [...]
