Film Legend & ‘Batman’ Star Michael Gough Has Died

cGt2099   |

Michael Gough

Sad news across the world for geeks today, as word has reached us that the wonderful actor, Michael Gough, has passed away. He was 94 years old. To most people, Michael Gough was well known for his role as Alfred Pennyworth in the 1990′s Batman movie series, beginning with Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989 and right through Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin in 1997.

However, this wasn’t Michael Gough’s first involvement in a franchise loved by geeks internationally. A very young Gough appeared as The Celestial Toymaker in Doctor Who back in 1965. The episode, The Celestial Toymaker, saw Gough act with the First Doctor William Hartnell. He would later appear with Fifth Doctor Peter Davison, playing a different role, in the episode Arc of Infinity [...]

Geek God Nathan Fillion Graces EW Cover

Empress Eve   |

Nathan Fillion EW cover

Let’s face it, Nathan Fillion is a geek god and we all kneel before him… now if only the world would realize how awesome he is!

Luckily, Entertainment Weekly at least knows we want more of the Firefly actor, as the magazine has acknowledged his Geek God status and made Fillion its cover guy for its March 25, 2011 issue, which hits stands tomorrow.

Fillion, who’s currently starring in the ABC television series Castle, graces the cover wearing a Green Lantern t-shirt, a nod surely to the days when the actor was widely rumored for the role of Hal Jordan in the upcoming Green Lantern file (a role that eventually went to Ryan Reynolds), as well as to the awesome fan-made trailer that actually places Fillion in the role [...]

New Compilation From Iron Maiden Coming Soon: ‘From Fear To Eternity’

cGt2099   |

Iron Maiden - From Fear To Eternity

There’s a new compilation album coming out from Iron Maiden, and the awesome music and brutal album cover (click image for the full view of awesomeness) will be coming out on May 23, 2011. For those who are both curious and generous, that’s nearly a week after my birthday [hint-hint!]. Seriously though, this new 2-disc album looks like a ripper. It’s called From Fear to Eternity and focuses on the last 20 years of the band.

In 2009, the Irons released a compilation called Somewhere Back in Time: The Best of 1980-1989, which focused on their first 10 years of reshaping, redefining, and dominating metal. This new album is being touted as the follow-up, and focuses on the releases Maiden has put out there from 1990 – 2010, and is a nice way to celebrate 30 years of the most influential bands in metal [...]

Lars Ulrich From Metallica Cast In Role For HBO Movie

cGt2099   |

Metallica

I honestly don’t know how to take this news. But here it is… Lars Ulrich, co-founder and drummer of Metallica, the man that fans either love to hate or hate to love or some variation thereof, has been cast in a film. Yep, that’s right; Ulrich is stepping up into acting having been cast in the HBO movie, Hemingway and Gellhorn.

Hemingway and Gellhorn is a biopic being executive produced by James Gandolfini (Mr. Soprano himself!) and directed by Phil Kaufman. The HBO film will focus on the romance and marriage between Ernest Hemingway (portrayed by Clive Owen) and Martha Gellhorn (portrayed by Nicole Kidman). The plot will follow the two through the Spanish Civil War and afterwards.

Also included in the casting are Molly Parker, Parker Posey, and Peter Coyote [...]

‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ Director David Slade To Develop ‘Daredevil’ Reboot

The Movie God   |

Another of the insta-reboots (along with new takes on Spider-Man and Fantastic Four) currently in development at various studios is Daredevil, the Marvel comic book title that was turned into a 2003 movie starring Ben Affleck for 20th Century Fox.

The ’03 movie cost $78 million to make and went on to bring in about $179 million worldwide. It also faced pretty mediocre critical reception — both being assumed reasons Fox has decided they wanted to give it another run. A reboot has been known about for a while, but the studio has now found someone to develop the project and possibly direct it, as well.

Fox has hired David Slade, who recently directed The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, to develop a brand new take on the Daredevil story. It’s assumed that once everything comes together, Slade would also be the man to direct. Eclipse cost $68 million to make and went on to bring in almost $700 million worldwide. [...]

Comic Review: Outsiders #37

Outsiders, Issue 37 coverOutsiders #37
Reign of Doomsday Part 2: Doom’s Day
Co-Plot and Script: Dan DiDio
Co-Plot and Art: Phillip Tan
Colorist: Pete Pantazis
Cover: Phillip Tan with Guy Major
Price: $2.99
DC Comics
Release date: March 9, 2011

Doomsday’s reign of terror continues in this issue. In the Steel one-shot, Doomsday defeated Steel and flew off with his body. In this issue, Outsiders #37, Steel is nowhere to be found. In this book, Doomsday’s primary target appears to be Eradicator. Steel and Eradicator were both replacement Supermen in the aftermath of Doomsday’s first battle with Superman, so there may be a pattern forming. Currently, the Outsiders have been split into two teams. Doomsday battles Geo Force’s team, which includes Eradicator, Katana, Halo, Looker, and The Olympian. Unsurprisingly, Doomsday easily defeats this team. The Olympian and The Eradicator do the most damage, but they also fall. The Olympian reminds me of Marvel Comics’ Hercules character. He is very proud and boastful and makes elegant speeches while fighting. This character is very interesting, and I hope someone at DC finds a use for him soon, because Outsiders is slated to be canceled after issue #40 [...]

Geoff Johns Says ‘Sandman’ TV Series Is Still Happening

Culturesmash   |

Sandman

Sandman is one of those comic book series that has been in development Hell for years. Back September it was reported that a television series was finally set to happen on CW with Supernatural creator Eric Kripke set to produce the show.

Earlier this week, Kripke said (via THR) that the series is on hold at least for this season: “Unfortunately, for a lot of varying reasons, Sandman is not in the works, at least for this season,” He continued from the red carpet prior to the Supernatural panel at PaleyFest Sunday, “just didn’t quite happen this season through nobody’s fault, and hopefully we can do it again in the future.” You’d think these comments would have put the nail in Sandman’s coffin right?

Just when things looked their darkest, comic book maestro Geoff Johns posted some statments on Twitter that go completely against Kripke’s comments. He reassures fans that he and Sandman creator Neil Gaiman are in fact moving forward on the Sandman television series [...]

Neil Gaiman To Write ‘Journey To The West’ Adaptation With James Cameron’s Help; Guillermo Del Toro May Direct

The Movie God   |

That would be a loaded headline, ladies and gentlemen.

It’s being reported that one of China’s major television producers, Zhang Jizhong, has reached a deal with award-winning author Neil Gaiman to pen the screenplay for a massive adaptation of the ancient Chinese tale, Journey to the West.

The adaptation, at the moment anyway, is planned to be an epic $300 million trilogy — $100 million per movie. No easy task to pull off, and one that would require some major help if we’re ever to see it made.

Enter a couple of names we’ve heard very recently: Avatar director James Cameron and Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro. Cameron will act as an adviser on the project, helping to bring the story together and offering his knowledge on many useful technologies like 3D. As for del Toro — he’s a good friend of Gaiman’s and is being looked at as a director for one or more of the movies, but is simply a maybe at the moment. [...]

Modder Turns R2-D2 Into Xbox 360 Playing Projection Masterpiece

The Movie God   |

The very talented creator of Major League Modders, Mark Bongo, has built what could be one of the ultimate geek treasures ever constructed.

Bongo took an R2-D2 of decent size, which should already have geek ears perking. He then added two very entertaining new elements to the Star Wars droid: an Xbox 360 and a projector. These brilliant additions allow for an Xbox-playing R2-D2 who can project your game onto any flat surface you want it to from 15″ to 50″ in size.

You can check out this insanely cool modded R2-D2 in the form of a video by clicking on over to the other side now, and there’s plenty of pictures at his Facebook page. If you’re much more wealthy than I am, you can even purchase it at the link provided above for $2,500. [...]

Must Watch: Simon Pegg & Nick Frost Re-Create ‘Star Wars’

The Movie God   |

It’s hard to argue a better pair of actors who often collaborate with one another than Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz co-stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Their chemistry and the natural comedy that’s born from their back and forth banter is pure fried gold.

While on the set of their new movie, Paul, the duo decided to re-create George Lucas’s famed Star Wars saga using the same techniques seen in the movie Be Kind Rewind. The results, however, may not have been quite what they were hoping for.

You can see the video of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost re-creating Star Wars by continuing on below now! [...]

What Secrets Does The New ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Skull Hold?

The Movie God   |

We’ve all seen the skull that’s often used in posters and promos for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but if you missed it the first time, there’s some sneaky changes for the latest installment in the franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

As you can see in the image above, the new skull is noticeably different with a nice chrome finish to it for some reason or another, but what other secrets and special additions does it hold?

Click on over to the other side now to find out and see a gigantic poster where you can see these hidden treasures close up, including a famed Disney character who’s hiding better than Waldo ever did.

Of the most obvious changes, apart from the strangely metallic shine, you might have noticed the small white pearl lodged deeply into one of the skull’s many golden teeth. Another subtle yet clear Easter egg of sorts is the tiny “X” etched into the right cheekbone (your left); likely “marks the spot” of the Fountain of Youth. [...]
