WonderCon 2011: All Eyes On Future Superman Henry Cavill At ‘Immortals’ Panel

Attention was focused on Henry Cavill during the Immortals panel today at WonderCon 2011 as it’s the actor’s first major public appearance since being cast as the Man of Steel in the new Superman movie directed by Zack Snyder.
“The new suit is still in development, so I haven’t tried it on,” Cavill said in response to the first fan question about what he feels like after putting on the Superman costume. He also talked about the training he went through to get in shape for Immortals, which no doubt made him an even more perfect candidate for Superman. “Lots of cardiovascular, lots of mixed martial arts, and eating very little.”
The trailer Tarsem Singh‘s Immortals was debuted. Cavil stars in the film as Theseus, who’s chosen by Zeus to protect the homelands from the threat of the titans and save the gods [...]

WonderCon 2011: Alien Revealed In Exclusive Footage at ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Panel

Director Jon Favreau refused to be outdone today at WonderCon 2011 by the 10-minute Green Lantern clip, so he played a 9-minute reel that included an exclusive first look at the alien from his new film Cowboys & Aliens.
The alien was shown at the end where a toothy looking creature reared its large ugly head into the opening of a cave where people were presumingly trapped inside. I’d say it looked pretty similar to Aliens, but I didn’t get as good of a look as I’d have liked to (side note: thank you person sitting in front of me who had to go to the restroom at the most inopportune time).
The scene started out with Daniel Craig‘s character Jake Lonergan walking up to a building and inspecting to see if anyone else was inside. He enters and starts dressing a wound just as a gun is pointed at his head from behind by Meacham (played by Clancy Brown). “Two kinds of men get shot: criminals and victims. Well, which one are ya?” Meacham says, which Jake replies with “I don’t know.” [...]

WonderCon 2011 Video: Ryan Reynolds Talks Green Lantern, Flash & Deadpool Movies

Star of the upcoming Green Lantern film Ryan Reynolds said he was pretty damn impressed with the footage showed off at this year’s WonderCon after being in a skin tight blue suit that didn’t breath well in Louisiana. [For details on that footage, read: WonderCon 2011: Ryan Reynolds Shows Off New ‘Green Lantern’ Footage and Watch Now: 4 Minutes Of New ‘Green Lantern’ Footage]
It was a fun panel filled with lots of banter between Reynolds and the audience. He joked with the fans about reading Green Lantern comics for inspiration, saying if he hadn’t at this point the fans would have run him out of the convention center in an angry mob — and then seemed disappointed that the crowd was slow to chant the Green Lantern oath with him, stopping midway through to reveal that the “front row just bombed it.”
“I was going to come out here and tell everyone I was cast a the lead in a new Flash movie since it’s April Fools Day,” Reynolds said, adding that he’d likely “be systematically murdered” if he played another super-character. And since he wouldn’t be playing Barry Allen, he suggested the role for Bradley Cooper, which got a mixed reaction from the crowd [...]

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Returns At IDW

IDW Publishing seems to be making a big splash at San Francisco’s WonderCon this weekend, and one of their big announcements was that they will be bringing back Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the world of comics this Summer, with an new series of comics and graphic novels based on the original series. The comics series will be just the first part of an on-going plan to return the Turtles to prominence. Nickelodeon actually bought the rights to the Turtles franchise last year for a cool $60 million and there are also plans for a new CGI show to air on Nickelodeon starting in late 2012 [...]

Music Review: Soundgarden – ‘Live On I-5′
 |
Posted by Obi-Dan | April 2nd, 2011 at 1:14 pm |

Soundgarden
Live on I-5
CD | MP3
A&M Records
U.S. Release date: March 22, 2011
UK Release date: March 21, 2011
Soundgarden is a band almost impossible to neatly define. So diverse is the band’s sound that anything they try — be it punk, grunge, rock, acoustic — nothing sounds out of place. Like contemporaries Faith No More, they manage to mix all of these influences together while still possessing an identifiable sound. This keeps their audience guessing, not just from album to album, but from each track to the next.
On new live album, Live on I-5, Soundgarden keeps this excitement going. It was recorded at various U.S. and Canadian venues at the tail end of 1996, just a few months before the band’s eventual break up. Thanks to this, there is a definite sense of anger within the performances, which added to the band’s natural energy and power on stage makes for an intensely frenetic and hugely impressive live album [...]

Posted by cGt2099 | April 2nd, 2011 at 9:32 am |

The teasers in the universe of Doctor Who continue to come out. With Series 6 only three weeks ago, and following the official BBC trailer release the other day, BBC America has posted a trailer for the American broadcast including additional footage. On top of that, also in the Whoniverse, Starz USA has also released their teaser trailer for Torchwood: Miracle Day. You can see both trailers at the bottom of this post.
2011 is a big year for Doctor Who fans, with Series 6 premiering with opening episode The Impossible Astronaut on April 23. Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, and Alex Kingston reprise their roles in the series, performing in stories penned by Steven Moffat, Neil Gaiman, Mark Gatiss, and more. Movie Review: Source Code
 |
Posted by Three-D | April 2nd, 2011 at 12:34 am |

Source Code
Directed by Duncan Jones
Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright
Release date: April 1, 2011
Graceful and complex cinema has been a stranger to the bulk of Hollywood productions recently. Long being that elusive beast that promises to resolve all triviality and heighten mediocrity to something astounding when it is adequately attained by a mind that is a true visionary. Inception, the most recent studio picture to attempt such originality, confounded us until our brain cells finally evaporated. We are still trying to gather our wits. But enter director Duncan Jones. He seems to have an artistic ability to present outlandish material in a straightforward manner while keeping our brain cells intact throughout the process. Refinement is what he is after, displaying, through his work, a contemptuous indifference to traditional and conventional norms. We saw hints of such audacity in Jones’ debut film Moon, which isn’t nearly as sophisticated and entertaining as his second feature film Source Code, a film that is proof that Jones’ mind barely senses the lifeless characteristics of conventional cinema. Characteristics, to him, that are ever diminishing [...]

WonderCon 2011: Ryan Reynolds Shows Off New ‘Green Lantern’ Footage

Ryan Reynolds, star of the upcoming film Green Lantern based on the DC Comics character, was on hand at WonderCon 2011 to answer questions from fans and talk a little bit about some new footage from the movie.
Most of what was shown was not part of the previously released trailers and the footage is not yet online, so here’s a description of the extended clip.
The footage starts out with Sinestro conversing with Abin Sur when a yellow beast, the deadly Parallax, begins attacking him, a.k.a kicking his ass. When Abin Sur is wounded, he escapes back to his spacecraft en route to Earth.
“Head for the nearest planet and begging the selection process,” Abin Sur says, then immediately cuts to a shot of his glowing blue spacecraft in front of a exasperated Hal Jordan (Reynolds), who sees Abin Sur’s oozing purple wounds and pulls him from the spacecraft [...]

WonderCon 2011: ‘Game of Thrones’ Booth

The folks from HBO set up an impressive booth at this year’s WonderCon featuring a full-scale replica throne that is an exact match as the one that will be used in the forthcoming television series debuting Sunday, April 17, 2011.
Not only that, but fans can actually get their picture taken on the throne and subsequently uploaded those photos to Twitter or Facebook using iPads set up at the booth by the staff. It’s actually pretty cool and if I had the time I would have waited in the tremendously long line to do just that.
They also had a collection of costumes from the set that they have on display, which I’ve conveniently taken pictures of and embedded the thumbnails below for all of you who can’t be in San Francisco this weekend for the convention. Check them out here…]

Movie Review: Dumbstruck

Dumbstruck
DIRECTED BY: Mark Goffman
STARRING: Terry Fator, Dan Horn, Kim Yeager, Wilma Swartz, Dylan Burdette
Truly*Indie
Official Website
RELEASE DATE: April 15, 2011 (limited)
Every once in a while you see a movie that makes your day. One that inspires you, makes you laugh, and leaves you with a smile on your face. Dumbstruck is that kind of movie.
The documentary opens up in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky at the Vent Haven ventriloquism convention where swarms of ventriloquists gather together, take part in various events, network, and sometimes perform in front of their peers. It is here where we meet most of the primary focuses of the movie — Dan Horn, Kim Yeager, Dylan Burdette, and Wilma Swartz — who we’re about to follow for the next year of their lives, watching to see what paths they travel and where their passion for ventriloquism takes them next.
Horn is the most experienced and well-traveled of the group — a popular cruise ship performer (one of the best gigs a ventriloquist can land) who has appeared on David Letterman’s Late Show, among others. [...]

‘True Grit’ Oscar Nominee Hailee Steinfeld In Line For ‘Sleeping Beauty’

Just recently, a short list of Oscar-nominated young actresses were in the running for the female lead in the adaptation of The Hunger Games, including 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld. Eventually the role was awarded to Jennifer Lawrence, but now Steinfeld is already attached to star in a new take on the tale of Sleeping Beauty.
The budding star — who somehow found a way to steal almost every scene she was in with Academy Award winners Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and fellow nominee Josh Brolin in the Coen brothers’ True Grit — is only “attached” at the moment because the entire project is just a spec package at the moment, which is being sent out to various potential buyers right now.
In this version, written by Lindsay Devlin, when Sleeping Beauty fades off into her slumber, she enters a dream world and must find her way back.
As is the case with every fairy tale these days, this would not be the first Sleeping Beauty movie in the works. [...]

Directed by Byron Howard, Nathan Greno
Starring Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy, Brad Garrett, Ron Perlman

With their 50th animated feature, Disney tackles the classic fairy tale Rapunzel, bringing to life the story of the young girl with golden tresses locked away high up in a tower, out of reach from the outside world.
In Tangled, the opening sequence gives us Rapunzel’s history: stolen from her King and Queen parents as a newborn by an wicked old woman named Gothel (Donna Murphy), Rapunzel’s long blonde hair holds the power to restore youth, hence why the witch keeps the princess captive. The girl, not knowing her true origin, lives her life in a high tower with no doors, with no friends or interaction with the outside world. Each day, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) lets down her 70-feet of hair through the window for Mother Gothel to climb up. Alfred Hitchcock Brought Back To Life To Direct ‘Walking Dead’ Film

Oh how I love a good resurrection!
In news that is catching the undead world by storm, it was announced today that through the use of advanced science and with the help of a few pages from the Necronomicon, Alfred Hitchcock, famed director of Psycho and The Birds, has been brought back to life. Now, you would think a director of this caliber would have a ripe choice of projects to pick from, but his dark Hollywood overlords have decided for him, putting him behind a big-screen version of The Walking Dead as his comeback [to life] picture. This comes as even a bigger shock than the undead returning to life, as The Walking Dead is already a fairly successful television series — even with its unnecessary and unprovoked violence towards innocent zombies [...]

Hulu Kicks It Back To The ’90s With A Spotlight On ‘The X-Files’

In honor of April Fool’s Day, Hulu kicks its site back to the mid-1990s when dial-up was impressive, the quality of web images was fuzzy at best, and the TV series The X-Files was all the rage.
Take a gander at the site today and bask in the glory of that awesome web design as you wait for the pages to load to watch the latest episodes of new breakout shows like the aforementioned X-Files (I have a good feeling about this one), as well as NewsRadio, Sliders, and Murder One.
Oh, and don’t fret — if you’re too young to remember the AOL-reigning days of the 1990s or if you’re just too shell-shocked by them, there’s an option to “Take me back to the future.” [...]
