The Weinstein Company Suing Relativity Media Over ‘The Crow’ Remake

Some potentially very good news for all of you fans of the 1994 cult classic, The Crow, which has been in the news quite often lately with a remake in the works through Relativity Media.
According to reports, The Weinstein Company, headed by brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, have decided to file a lawsuit against Ryan Kavanaugh and Relativity, and that it’s now been submitted to the court. They claim that they have contracts that are “signed by everyone” that declare their exclusive ownership of all distribution rights to The Crow from their days with Miramax.
Bert Fields, who’s representing the Weinsteins, says that the two parties went back and forth many times before the lawsuit was submitted. He continued, stating that “Mr. Kavanaugh was not going to honor that contract. Apparently, he’s going to sell these rights to others. He made a bunch of threats. Some people may submit to that kind of arrogant conduct, but we’re not going to do it. If anybody tries to buy these distribution rights in The Crow, they are buying nothing but a lawsuit and they will get sued.” [...]

UPDATED: Oscar Nominated Documentary ‘Restrepo’ Director Tim Hetherington Killed In Libya

It’s being reported that Tim Hetherington, co-director of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Restrepo, has been killed in a mortar attack while working in Libya.
Hetherington was with a group of photo journalists who were all injured in the attack, including Getty Images photographer Chris Hondros, whose wounds are said to be “grave.” (UPDATE: It’s now been confirmed that Mr. Hondros has also passed away)
Details are still coming out as they are learned. You can keep track of updates the second they come around by following someone like NPR senior strategist Andy Carvin on Twitter.
Below you can see a video made by ABC News about the tragedy, as well as the trailer for Restrepo.
Speaking of Twitter, Hetherington’s final post to the social networking site was made on April 19th, and acts as a haunting reminder of the chaos still going on in Libya, which ultimately resulted in his death earlier today. It read “In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO.” [...]

The GoD List: Comics For April 20, 2011
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | April 20th, 2011 at 4:38 pm |
Each week, MK2Fac3 and Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull list, grab some issues and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of April 20, 2011. Single issues and trades, they’re all here. This week is kind of slow, so Henchman21 is flying solo.

Deadpoolmax #7 (of 12) (Marvel/Max – $3.99) If you had told me a year ago that a Deadpool book would be one of my favorite titles, I would have said you were crazy, but David Lapham and Kyle Baker’s Deadpoolmax has made me a believer. Everything that readers love about Deadpool is here, it’s just cranked up. Add to it Baker’s unique art style, and you get a crazy, entertaining book that I can’t get enough of.
X-Factor #218 (Marvel – $2.99) I was talking to someone at last year’s New York Comic-Con, and they said they were looking for a socially relevant comic and didn’t know if there was one, and the first book I told them about was X-Factor. Writer Peter David uses each issue to tackle a wide variety of modern subjects, while still telling fun adventure stories with a cast of characters I have come to love. If I had a complaint about the book it is that it can’t hold onto a regular artist to save its life, but the series has maintained such a high story quality that I forgive it [...]

Rocker Sammy Hagar made an appearance last night on the late night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote this new autobiography Red.

During Hagar’s interview with host Jimmy Kimmel, the segment cut away to Hagar doing a reenactment of his alien encounter, complete with voiceover narration from the passage of the book.

‘Doctor Who’: Remembering Sarah Jane Smith
 |
Posted by cGt2099 | April 20th, 2011 at 12:08 pm |

I have to be truthful. I was absolutely devastated when hearing the news yesterday that Elisabeth Sladen had passed away. We reported her death here at Geeks of Doom, and tributes from around the world began pouring in on the internet in memory of her. The Australian ABC invited fans to share their Sarah Jane memories on their Facebook page; and the BBC created a Sarah Jane playlist on YouTube. Fantastic artwork, such as the beautiful design above by DalekBigBoy from the Gallifrey Base forums, also began sprouting around the web– through other avenues as well, such as Twitter and social news sites.
I can’t help but reflect more on Elisabeth Sladen — since it’s important, in my view, to highlight (especially to newer fans), that she was more than just a companion to us oldies and dinosaurs. She was a defining person during our early years, so her death is felt so much closer to the heart for us [...]

Today comes word from the Priest camp that guitarist K.K. Downing has formally retired from the band and will not be joining them on the upcoming EPITAPH world tour.

Blu-ray Review: The Walking Dead Season 1
By SoAndyway

The Walking Dead, Season One
Blu-ray | DVD
Based on the Comic Book Series Created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore,
and Charlie Adlard
Developed for Television by Frank Darabont
Starring Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies, Norman
Reedus, Steven Yeun
Anchor Bay Entertainment
Release Date: March 8, 2011
When I first heard about AMC’s The Walking Dead, I was very intrigued. Not many networks take chances on comic book properties, let alone one that has nothing to do with tights or flights. I had read a few issues of the comic prior to watching the series and liked them very much, but for the most part I went into the series not really knowing what to expect, and I think that’s why I was so taken aback by what I saw.
From previews and television spots one could surmise that the show would be a relentless gore fest. While there is plenty of gore, The Walking Dead doesn’t rely on that to propel its incredible story. Producer Frank Darabont has an immense passion for this show, one that shines through in each episode on the recently released DVD/Blu-ray sets. [...]

RIP Sarah Jane: Legendary ‘Doctor Who’ Actress Elisabeth Sladen Has Died
 |
Posted by cGt2099 | April 19th, 2011 at 7:54 pm |

Although the new Doctor Who season has been highly anticipated, fans of the long running sci-fi show are in mourning today, as the news came out that Elisabeth Sladen, known for her role as Sarah Jane Smith in Classic Doctor Who, died today at the age of 63. Lizo Mzimba from the BBC has reported that Sladen has been dealing with cancer for some time now.
Sladen made her debut as Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who in 1973, starring alongside Third Doctor Jon Pertwee as his new companion. Her first episode was The Time Warrior, which saw her and the Doctor face off against the evil Sontarans. She continued working with Doctor Who for three years, and stayed on when Tom Baker took over as the Fourth Doctor. [...]

Book Review: Peter & Max: A Fables Novel
 |

Peter & Max: A Fables Novel
Paperback | Kindle
By Bill Willingham
Illustrated by Steve Leialoha
Vertigo
Released: October 2009
For those of you that have not read Bill WIllingham‘s wonderful Fables comics or graphic novels, you do yourself a disservice. But worry not, the new spinoff, Peter & Max: A Fables Novel is a standalone novel. Not that it doesn’t tie into the comics by name and locale but it requires no former knowledge of the series or its characters.
I find myself in awe of the writing style, so much so that it is inspiring me to add flourish to my own review. As with the entirety of the comic series, this novel is less about the length of the tale (which is quite long) and more about the depth of its telling. And what a tale it is! It delves deeper into the life of a Fable than I have ever before been honored to witness (or in this case, read). [...]

It’s Week of Geek and we’re counting down to the premiere episode of Doctor Who Series 6, entitled The Impossible Astronaut, launching on Saturday April 23 on BBC in the UK, and BBC America in the U.S. The BBC has released a whole bunch of new images in the run up to the opening of the season, and you check all of them out at the bottom of this post… but be warned, some might find them a bit spoilery!
This photo collection is mainly made up of stills from the first two episodes of Series 6, The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon. The two episodes make up one adventure, as The Doctor (Matt Smith) is reunited with his companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), and River Song (Alex Kingston) [...]

Kill Some Frost Giants In The New ‘Thor: Hammer of The Gods’ Web Game

If you found yourself spending hours playing Angry Birds, then here’s something even better: a new online game called Thor: Hammer of The Gods.
In this free web game, which is a tie-in to Marvel’s upcoming Thor movie, you fight in Asgard as Thor against the Frost Giants. When you defeat enough enemies — by throwing the mighty Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer! — in a certain amount of rounds, it unlocks trophies, which contain footage from the film and character bios. You can also choose to sign into the game through your Facebook account so you can compete against others.
I’m not going to lie, this game is addictive. Once you wield the power of Mjolnir, you just can’t stop! Check out my badass score in the screenshot above — not bad for my first try! (I probably would have done better had I maybe read the brief instructions on how throw the hammer, but I don’t have the patience for that.) [...]
