Major Movie Studios Deciding They Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Comic-Con

It would appear that something of a rebellion is underway by major movie studios who are usually expected to show off big and exciting things from their upcoming slate every year at San Diego Comic-Con. A growing number of said studios have declared that they will not be attending Comic-Con this summer, and others are still pondering whether the yearly geek mecca is worth their time and promotional efforts.
The New York Times is reporting that among the studios who have decided not to show up at Comic Con this year is Warner Brothers, Walt Disney, DreamWorks, and The Weinstein Company. Even bigger might be Marvel — likely the most expected to show up and promote The Avengers — who is apparently still “on the fence” as to if they want to attend this summer’s convention.
So many big studios not showing up could be devastating to many who so look forward to the extravaganza each year, but their reasoning behind said studios making this decision is not of the nonsensical variety. [...]

DC Relaunch: September’s Green Lantern Covers
 |
Posted by MK2Fac3 | June 13th, 2011 at 8:23 pm |

DC Comics released the official covers from the upcoming Green Lantern family of titles Monday, which you may have noticed were missing from their initial announcement. Although I’m not entirely sure why they withheld the covers, it is convenient that these were released the same week that the live-action Green Lantern film hits theaters. It’s also a great way for us to kick-off our Green Lantern Week of Geek!
In case you’ve forgotten, and I don’t see how that’s possible, these new covers and titles are a part of the relaunch initiative that DC Comics has planned for September, so if you’ll be going to see the new movie this weekend, make a note of the titles that you’re interested in here, because you’ll be able to start fresh with the comics in the Fall.
I’ve included the covers along with each of their solicitations, so check them out here [...]

Tom Hanks’ Playtone Developing Six Seasons Of Neil Gaiman’s ‘American Gods’ For HBO

Back in April it was reported that a new series based on Neil Gaiman‘s hit novel, American Gods, was being developed for HBO. At the time it was unclear whether it would ever actually happen or how exactly they would go about bringing it to the small screen, but it looks like big plans are in the works for the project.
New reports reveal that Tom Hanks and his Playtone Productions are now developing what’s being described as an “open-ended” series for HBO, with six seasons being set up already. Each season will run 10–12 episodes—each of which will run around an hour in length—and will cost about $35-40 millions per season. Hanks will act as an executive producer along with Gary Goetzman, Bob Richardson, and Gaiman, who will also act as a writer on the series.
This is an interesting move because while fans of the book are intrigued by a series about Gaiman’s book, it was hard to figure out how they would make more than one or two seasons out of it, let alone six with the possibility of more. [...]

RIP Roy Skelton – Voice Of The Daleks From Classic ‘Doctor Who’ Has Died

Posted by cGt2099 | June 13th, 2011 at 5:55 pm |

Roy Skelton, who is long-remembered as the voice of the Daleks in Classic Doctor Who, has passed away at the age of 79. Skelton had his first step into acting after leaving school and joining the National Association of Boys’ Club Travelling Theatre, and then eventually training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
After a variety of parts on the BBC, Skelton became known as a voice actor, which led to his first role as the voice of the Daleks in 1967′s The Evil of the Daleks, a Classic Doctor Who adventure featuring Second Doctor Patrick Troughton. Skelton continued the Dalek role in Doctor Who until 1988, and also became the voice of other enemies, including the Cybermen and the Krotons [...]

Interview: Black Country Communion’s Glenn Hughes
 |
Posted by Obi-Dan | June 13th, 2011 at 12:12 pm |

It was over 40 years when “the voice of rock” Glenn Hughes was at the epicenter of the rock explosion from middle England. He found success with the blues rock band Trapeze and went on to join Deep Purple and Black Sabbath (on the Seventh Star album, technically a Tony Iommi solo project) and sell countless albums under his own name.
He has now found yet another winning combination in his latest band Black Country Communion. He talked with me, while still in his rock star PJs, just before BCC heads out on tour. He immediately radiates cool and positive vibes. “Just letting the dog’s out. What’s going on, mate?”
Geeks of Doom: How did Black Country Communion come together?
Glenn Hughes: Joe [Bonamassa] and I were playing at the House of Blues about 18 months ago. Kevin Shirley [BCC producer] was there and he thought it was insanely good and he thought Joe and I, instead of doing a duet album, we should form a rock and roll band. The likes [of which] haven’t been seen for 20, 30 years. And that’s what we did.
Geeks of Doom: Are you comfortable with the ‘Supergroup’ tag? [...]

Deal: Back To The Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy Blu-ray For $15!

Right now, Amazon is running an amazing deal on the Back To The Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy on Blu-ray for only $14.99 (that’s 81% off the list price of $79.98).
I wrote about this sale last week when it was down to $25 and I thought that was great, but this drop down to $15 is insane and is the lowest I’ve ever seen this set. There’s no end date listed for this sale, but the Blu-ray is currently at #1 for Bestsellers in Blu-ray on Amazon, which means supplies can (and most likely will) run out real soon, so grab this item while it’s drastically discounted — and while it’s cheaper than the DVD price!
The Blu-ray set contains all three movies (Part I, II, and III), along with digital copies of each film, which you can use to watch them on your computer or portable devices like an iPod or iPad [...]

Spoiler Talk: Super 8

The less cynical you are, the more you’ll enjoy Super 8. Probably. Simply because you’ll be able to forgive more readily what feels like a copy of a copy of earlier, better kids-eye-view science fiction, namely from Super 8‘s Executive Producer Steven Spielberg. Your kids might like it though…unless they’ve already seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind or [INSERT any Spielberg movie made before the Award Whoring Color Purple] or any of a dozen movies Super 8 feels like it’s pilfering from in writer/director J.J. Abrams diverting if ultimately disappointing follow-up to 2009’s Star Trek reboot. Perhaps the expectations were too high, as you’d expect when you combine the Alpha Dog and Beta Pup of A-list geekery from the past 35 years in Spielberg and Abrams. You get the feeling Spielberg watched Super 8 thinking to himself, “Nice Try J.J., but I did it so much better years ago.” Even if Spielberg didn’t think that, any viewer familiar with late 70s/early 80s Spielberg will. The movie lays on the nostalgia nice and syrupy thick and forgets that while you’re remembering the good times…there should be a movie that stands on its own there somewhere, not a blueprint for one. You see the archetypes and common tropes for the movies Super 8 references, but all that does is make you want to watch those all the more.
And what does it say when the near-magical end credits are the most engaging part of the movie? It says that Super 8 is barely a step up from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and do with that what you will.
Time for some SPOILER TALK! Below are SPOILERS for Super 8. Feel free to add your thoughts in the Comments section. [...]

30th Anniversary Of ‘Indiana Jones and The Raiders Of The Lost Ark’
 |
Posted by Obi-Dan | June 12th, 2011 at 1:03 pm |

Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Directed by Steven Spielberg
Screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan
Story by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman
Starring Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, Paul Freeman, John Rhys-Davies, Ronald Lacey
Score by John Williams
Released June 12, 1981 (U.S.)
The 1970s announced the finest era of the summer movie blockbuster. Two of the biggest movies of that decade, Star Wars and Jaws, defined the summer movie season. These movies, directed by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg respectively, are still heralded by us – the geeks. Most of us would not be here writing and reading this very website if it were not for these movies (my name is Obi-Dan for crying out loud!). This movie-making dream team came together to create one of the greatest action adventure movies ever made: Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
From a story by George Lucas and Phillip Kaufman, who had recently co-written the screenplay for the outstanding Clint Eastwood-starring Western, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Indiana Jones began to take real shape in the late ’70s. The screenplay was then written by Lawrence Kasdan with Raiders only his second screenplay to get made (his first?: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back just a year earlier. Talk about hitting the ground running) [...]

‘Uncanny X-Men’ To End With Issue #544

I don’t know about you, but I’m a little tired of only hearing about DC after the last week and a half, so Marvel has seen fit to release a bit of news themselves. Unfortunately, it’s not necessarily the kind of news I want to hear.
On Thursday, Marvel revealed that they would be ending one of their flagship titles when Uncanny X-Men comes to an end in October with issue #544. The issue will be written by Kieron Gillen with art by Greg Land and will tie into whatever happens in the upcoming X-Men: Schism event.
The solicitation for the issue reads like this [...]

Movie Review: Super 8
 |
Posted by Three-D | June 11th, 2011 at 7:00 pm |

Super 8
Directed by J.J. Abrams
Starring: Kyle Chandler, Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Riley Griffiths, Gabriel Basso, Ryan Lee, Zach Mills, Ron Eldard
Release Date: June 10, 2011
In the general dismay of cinema during these hot summer months there is a movie hopeful enough to fly upon the road toward originality. It despises most stupidity and harbors and displays a profound contempt for the immense reluctance directors and screenwriters exhibit when trying to craft a “refreshing” summer film. Super 8 swerves sharply in its walk, detaching itself from the summer films that find it a necessity to stir its audience into a panic via overwhelming action scenes, and passes other uninspiring films because it never shows a reluctance to engage with the consciousness, sensibilities, and behaviors found evident in all children. By engaging itself in this childhood realm the film approaches an innocence unrealized in mainstream cinema and doesn’t hesitate in grasping it. The results are penetrating, illuminating, and ultimately moving.
Director and screenwriter J.J. Abrams is working in rarefied air for the bulk of his third feature (Mission Impossible III and Star Trek his other features), exclusively occupying Super 8 in a space where only Mr. Steven Spielberg, this film’s producer, successfully prevailed in films such as E.T. and The Goonies. Embarking on a journey to capture the essential emotions found thriving in children is a task that is difficult to exactly pinpoint and to make it engaging for an adult crowd is even more difficult [...]

Matt Smith Returning In Series 7 Of ‘Doctor Who’; Plus Captain Jack and River Song Rumors!
 |
Posted by cGt2099 | June 11th, 2011 at 4:16 pm |

It’s been a big news week for Doctor Who, with some major announcements and rumors floating around the web about Series 7. The BBC has made a formal announcement that they have commissioned 14 new episodes for 2012, including a Christmas Special, which has become a tradition for the new era of Doctor Who.
Additionally, Steven Moffat and the BBC have also confirmed that Matt Smith will be continuing his role as the Doctor in Series 7 during 2012, following some silly rumors online that he was stepping down. With the official confirmation from the BBC, the rumors were put to rest… but that didn’t stop Moffat and others lay out some clues as to what else we might be seeing in Series 7.
Following the official announcements from the BBC, John Barrowman (aka Captain Jack Harkness from Torchwood) revealed in an interview with Zap2It that the return of Captain Jack to Doctor Who has been discussed between Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat. “I’ve always said that if I’m asked to go back to Doctor Who, I’ll go at the drop of a hat,” Barrowman says. “That’s where Captain Jack got his beginnings. And it’s already been discussed.” [...]

MP3 Album Deal: The Go-Go’s ‘Beauty And The Beat’ (30th Anniversary Edition)

The MP3 album deal of the day over at Amazon today is Beauty And The Beat, the 1981 debut album by the all-girl rock band The Go-Go’s, for only $3.99.
This sale version is the new Beauty & The Beat: 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, which was released last month. It contains the album’s 11 original tracks remastered — including their mega-hit “We Got The Beat” — along with 5 new bonus live songs. Also, if you purchase this MP3 album download, you’ll also get the digital booklet.
This new edition of the album is also available as a 2-CD set for $16.83, which has the original album remastered, plus a bonus live album of 17 songs (the same 5 from the MP3 album, plus 12 more from the same Boston concert).
Math time: Typically, MP3 songs sell for $.99 each, which means in order for the $3.99 MP3 sale to be worth it for the buyer, there has to be at least four songs on the album worth having. In my opinion, this is a perfect album, every song is great, but here’s the four to justify the cost: “We Got The Beat,” “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “Automatic,” and “Skidmarks On My Heart.” Plus, I think 4 bucks for 16 really great tunes is a steal [...]

E3 2011: Closer Look At ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ Shows Inventory, Skill Customization & More!

We saw an amazing gameplay demo for Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim come out of E3 earlier this week, which showed off things like the ability to mix and match magic spells, weapons, and shields in both hands, combat, and something a lot of people are excited about: dragon fights.
While that demo was fantastic to watch and has everyone even more excited about Skyrim (if that was at all possible), Todd Howard sat down for another demonstration and showed off even MORE goodies from the game.
This new video showed a lot of the same things we saw in the earlier dragon fight demo, but this time around he also shows us the interface menu, what inventory will look like (including thousands of items we can examine in three dimensions), Guardian Stones, dialogue, jobs, the map, riding horses, and how our character will evolve into their own uniquely talented individual based on how you play. Excitement!
You can see this new gameplay demo for Skyrim below. [...]

‘Harry Potter’ Director Chris Columbus’s 1492 Pictures To Remake ‘Trollhunter’

Remaking popular foreign movies in America is nothing new…and on most occasions, the remake ends up not being anywhere near as good. Seriously, learn to love reading subtitles—you’ll barely even notice them after a few minutes. Even so, there have been a few U.S. remakes that have been very good and sometimes even surpass the originals.
Another foreign remake has now been planned with the announcement that 1492 Pictures, the production company of Home Alone, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets director Chris Columbus, has teamed up with CJ Entertainment & Media to acquire the rights to remake Trollhunter.
The 2010 Norwegian film, directed by André Øvredal, is still fairly new around here (you can see it on demand now and it hits select theaters today), and tells the story of a group of students who set off on a mission to document real living trolls on film. You can see the trailer for the original right here, and visit the official site here. [...]
